POD Leaves Thursday

:crap2::Finally the day is almost here. The POD and all our belongings including the computer leave Thursday.Hopefully we won't be far behind.It's been a journey that will have a Happy ending. A suggestion you may want to consider ... if your computer is anything like ours with important info such as pictures stored on the hard drive, you may want to bring the computer with you in the car.

When you're moving, anything of value that you would not want to lose should be transported with you rather than leaving to the moving company, POD, etc.

Think of it as if you needed to evacuate your home due to hurricane, fire, etc. What items would you take with you? Pictures, jewelry, important papers, collectibles, family heirlooms, etc. When we evacuated for Hurricane Katrina we brought our computer tower with us. If something is important to you keep it in your possession. Don't trust it to someone else.

congrats Skip....let the adventure begin. You will so love catching the end of summer here and the beautiful weather all 'fall' and winter. Great time to settle in and start playing.

I'm with English Ivy....the only thing that broke in our move from CA to TV was the computer. The mother board was destroyed. I'd put it in the car or back everything up in case something happens.

How easy was it, did you like using, and what does it cost to use a POD? The wife and I are thinking of using them.

Actually worked well. You set up the schedule as far as drop off. They asked when it needed to be in Florida and they told me when they would pick it up. No rush to load it. Tie downs are inside every 4' The cost with insurance for 30days was just under 2K from Long Island to TV. I would load some stuff, go get more boxes load some more. One good tip get your boxes all the same size if you can. I actually went to a local outlet mall and took all the heavy duty boxes 2 of the stores were getting rid of. They were happy so was I.

Army Guy, I just got a quote FROM POD to move from NJ to the Villages. The quote was $1300 for one POD and $1800 FOR TWO pods. That price was for the small PODS which were about 6'by6'by 7'. If u search around though you can locate vouchers for about 10% off. Hope this helps.

PODS containers are designed to accommodate a typical household. Larger households will require multiple containers. In general, each 8x7x7 container may accommodate 1 room, each 8x8x12 container may accommodate 2-3 rooms, and each 8x8x16 container may accommodate 3-4 rooms. As every household is different, the customer is responsible for assessing the container capacity for their belongings. Container sizes are approximate.

Long distance moves use the 8x8x16 container.

You can use the smaller POD but the 8x8x16 cost me $150.00 more. I didn't pack it all the way to the ceiling and was able to purchase a few items on sale we needed to bring along. When you get your change of address form from USPS there's a coupon in there also if your a AARP go on the web site and you get a discount from them also. Honestly the 1st quote I got was $350.00 higher then my final. I know it was a lot cheaper then a moving company or the truck rental and I don't have to drive it.

You gentlemen are correct that the larger PODS are the way to go if u r moving a house full of furniture. My wife and I, however, decided that we lived with our old furniture long enough and it was time to replace everything. As a result, we bought a house in Bonnybrook and furnished it from Southern Life Styles and Bargains and Treasures. I did, however, need some small PODS to take bikes, Motorcycle, Tools, and things like that. Now all I have to figure out is how and where I am going to put all the junk I brought!

K2at, thanks for the info! Me and wife doing the same as you. All new furniture for TV, just taking actually 5 pieces of furniture with us, and I have a pickup so I am going to bring down some each trip. Need the pod for everything else, so I know we can get by with the smaller POD since it will basically be clothes and knick-knaks, etc.

When I moved from Los Angeles to TV exactly a year ago today, I packed everything valuable in the back of my SUV including some plants and my laptop. Although nothing broke that came with the movers, it was convenient to have all my dog food, dog equipment, laptop and much needed paperwork already unpacked by the time the movers arrived in TV.
A suggestion, I got a lot of my boxes from a restaurant bar while he was unpacking the large liquor bottles. They were very good because they were double-thick corrugated, very sturdy for very fragile items. The bartender was also very appreciative because he hated to break down those boxes for trash. Surprisingly, they held a lot of knickknacks.

About how much does the bigger one cost?

I'm looking at the invoice $1981.23 with contents insurance. for a 30 day time frame . That's for an 8x8x16 POD. I got the larger one because I didn't want to pack it to the ceiling, it let me buy a few items we wanted which we got a very good price on, and it was only $150 dollars more the the small one. Like everybody else has said we're starting over. Never had a new house, got rid of all the furniture had a huge yard sale and sold a lot of STUFF. When yard sale was over I threw away 2 garbage cans of leftovers. My furniture went to my daughter as did our second vehicle. i really think the POD is the way to go.

My wife and I are moving from the COLD of Wisconsin to TV in October and are using a POD. It's going to cost us $2300. My question to anyone is, they don't come with Moving Blankets. Anyone know where I can get some Used Blankets. I can't see buying 12 blankets and then not using them again. Thanks for you help in advance.

rent your moving blankets at U-HAUL.....$15 for 10 blankets (or was it $10 for 15). I used 60 blankets for 2 Large PODS So it was less than $100 and MUCH cheaper than buying them. I could have gotten away with 50 or so. You can return them locally here in TV near the POst Office.
