Came from a Maryland County approx. the same size as Lake with a similar student population. School Board members received $3500 ann. Needed extended service for pension. Hmmmmmmm!!!

You think that's a lot? Different job, but in 2009-10, the superintendent of Syosset, NY school district was paid $506,000. The commissioner of police in Nassau County got $685,000!!!!!!. The highest paid patrol officer, a corporal with 25+ years of service was getting $235,000

Midsize city in Illinois (120,000 population) and revenue of just north of 147 million the school board members receive no compensation.

No compensation in PA either to my knowledge. I just did some quick research and it does look like Florida may have the highest paid school board members overall. In most states it appears that they are unpaid positions.

No comp in NJ and you will have some out of pocket expenses.
But then why shouldn't someone be paid for their services?

Guess it depends on your view of civic duty, responsibility. I served 17 years on a critical care community hospital board with no comp. Six years on a Community College board and 6 years on an Airport commission again for no comp. There were many others serving with me at no comp and certainly not pension privileges. We had no real problem finding qualified volunteers for these posts.
Yes, I do think that reasonable expenses should be covered.

You didn't think these people were actually preforming a public service did you. Public sector is full of this all over country. Florida probably among worse.

This exactly why your taxes are so high. Public school is the biggest waste of taxpayers money for what student gets. Plus the cry all the time the don't have enough money. No public school super should make more that the president of th United States. board members verily part time job? Naturally they will boost their salaries just like politicians.

:blahblahblah::blahblahblah::blahblahblah: I read a bumper sticker when I first moved here from the "NORTH". It said "I don't care how it's done up north."

True then, true now. :clap2:

You are confusing school board members and school superintendents. In New York school board members generally do not receive a salary. Certain districts provide a small stipend. You can not compare the responsibilities of school board members with superindents.

In Florida school superindents often receive salaries above $200000 with incentives. School boardmembers also receive the $32000 salary noted before.

Some forty years ago in our area it was a volunteer job.
