View Full Version : When driving your golf cart, how often are you passed?

I have been passed a few times in the past year and passed someone a couple, three times.
How about you? I suppose it depends on how much you drive it and what time of the year it is.
When I was driving much more in my cart than I do now...it was still rare to pass or be passed.

I asked my husband and he said that he (in the past year) has passed several people and several people have passed him. He plays golf four times a week and frequently will drive from 466 where we live to below 466A to play.
In my opinion, my husband is a good driver in cart or car.

I have checked and double checked my carts speed. And it will go 19.8 uphill and 20.7 downhill with only one person on board. So just a bit more than legal down hill. I do have a speedometer installed and it matches the checked mph at those sheriff speed signs every time.
There are many carts out there who drive or chose to drive at about 17. Not sure if they realize they are going below the legal limit, but I will pass them. And have even been yelled at by a few when you pass. They must not realize they are going slow. I have also been going the speed limit and have had carts zoom past at what had to be over 25 mph.
So I would guess in the past year I have passed 3 or 4 and have been passed by 3 or 4. And probably about the same for several past years. I do use the cart a lot and go just about every where possible in it.

If you're talking about being passed by other golf carts doing over 20 mph ,yeah, too many times to count by so many different carts on Morse, San Marino, Enrique, Madero, Palo Alto and countless side streets I can't keep track. I've been in my car on Enrique doing 25 and been passed by golf carts doing well over 25 and they weren't street legal carts.

I was driving my auto on a street going 25 miles an hour and a golf cart passed me on the right in the golf cart lane.I estimated the cart speed at 30 MPH.The cart was not street legal.I hope the cart has with disk brakes ,a roll bar and seat belts with shoulder harness. Some people are nuts!
When I am driving my cart which has a top speed of 22 MPH on a flat surface, I am passed often but I usually catch up at the next stop sign or tunnel.

Hi Gracie,
I get passed pretty much on a daily basis (I love just driving around in the cart). I don't go slow, but I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of the passing carts were doing a tad bit more than 19.8 miles.

The newer golf cart has a governor on it which does not allow me to get it past 20 or so. I get passed often by other carts but only pass the carts going quite slow.
Old golf cart had the governor adjusted up by the maintenance people so it would go up to about 25 mph but I still had carts passing me going much faster.

I drive every day except Sunday on Morse, north of 466, to pick up mail. It's about 3/4 mile, and I get passed on average every other day. I also get tailgated nearly every day, which is far more aggravating to me than getting passed. My electric cart tops out at a GPS-verified 19.5 MPH.

We get passed on a daily basis. Our cart is from The Villages carts so I don't know how fast it is but it seems fast enough.
Most of the time I have to hold hubby back from giving them the finger.......luckily he always does but waits till there too far away to see or even care, but it makes him feel better.
Frankly, I could care less, living in South Florida it is a multiple daily occurance and I am so over it.
if it makes men feel better....and it is 100% men who have done this to me, if it gives them a little more umph in there ego.. and gives them a cheap thrill.....then by all means....go ahead pass me....I could care less....

I have been passed by a golf cart when I was doing 30mph in my car on the back road where I live ............ and I could tell from the look on his face that he really, really wanted to pass me. Then, for some unknown reason, he slowed down and I just buzzed past him and left him behind. I find some golf cart drivers have this weird need to pass a car! Whatever - just have a nice day!

We were passed by 3 carts just yesterday and none of which had street legal plates. We have a speedometer and do 20 and 20.7 downhill before governor kicks in. We are passed daily but most times you catch them either at a light or a stop sign. What's the rush? Wish the sheriff would nab some of these people. They are going to cause an accident.

I'm not an expert but the new 2017 Yamaha is set to do 24 mph. We have a 2015 and last time we had it serviced the villages golf carts made us sign a memo that said we authorize them to turn back the speed if it is set over 20 mph. This time they asked us where we wanted it set. Offered options were 22.5 or 24. I did not ask but I do wonder how they could set a half mile an hour on that crude governor system.
Originally, golf carts were designed to do 15 mph. They only have brakes on the rear wheels. Like your old Schwinn bike with brakes on the rear wheel only, when you hit the brakes hard the weight moves forward and it easily skids. Golf carts are also top heavy. We've all seen them with four people each well over 200 lbs in them. Folks that is 900 lbs almost equal to the empty weight of the car, well above the center of gravity.
The golf cart paths are clearly not designed for these speeds.

Our cart goes slightly slower than yours but our experiences have been very similar. Some people seem to drive too slow when they are distracted, talking, looking for something, etc.
Oh, and we have been passed by men, women, and kids. It certainly hasn't only been men.

I find that I probably get passed more than I pass other carts. Most of the time it seems that the passing occurred on a street rather than on a MMP. The thing that really frost me is when on the MMP that runs by Freedom Point, I am stopped at a stop sign and someone blows around me!

I get passed pretty often. My cart is fast and I could outrun most of the passers but it really doesn't usually bother me when they pass. The two exceptions that have drawn curses from my lips were last year when a guy passed me in the tunnel from Laurel Manor to Saddlebrook and the other night when a fellow passed me while I had my left turn signal on.

I agree that most are men, but I have been passed by women quite a few times.
BTW - street legal carts make me cringe, they look very dangerous on Morse or Buena Vista when cars are passing at 40+ MPH. And if the driver is going full speed on the multi-modal paths I think they are a danger to the slower traffic. I think they work great in a community with city street speed limits of 25 but not here.

Any mechanic that adjusts a golf cart to go over 20mph is creating an unregistered motor vehicle and is subject to stiff fines and loss of license. If you own this modified cart and don't even drive it, you too are subject to a fine (about $250) and you need to have a mechanic certify that it has been limited to legal speed. I've had plenty of carts pass me while going 20mph. Even at 20mph, an emergency maneuver in a cart often turns out badly. They have poor brakes, poor suspension, and a small
wheel base. That's why they call them "golf carts".

Hi, GG. I often will pass a lone bicyclist or runners when there is no visible traffic heading toward me. I like to drive at about 17 MPH most times. If a cart comes up behind me, I signal them to (safely) pass. Most times, the driver waves in thanks, but once one delusional woman gave me the single-finger salute. Go figure.

Someone needs to explain to me what the problem is .Why can't people pass others without getting cursed at? Why is it that the person blocking the faster traffic from flowing not the problem? Driving fast is a choice one makes . No one except the police should be the ones telling them they're wrong. The other day I was passing someone on Pinellas pl in the village of Pinellas and some guy was cussing me out . I wasn't affecting anything he was doing as he was in the diamond lane and I was in the middle of the road passing him . Am I supposed to stay behind him even if he's going slower then I'm capable of going? Folks if I choose to drive fast and if I get caught that's my problem. Before anyone says I'm going to cause an accident I want you to know I would never pass anyone without the proper distance needed to do so.

Those who have illegally altered their golf carts to exceed 19.6 have never been in a golf cart accident and probably do not use seat belts as well. Almost all the golf cart seats do not have restrains to keep them from flying up and launching you through the windshield if you hit something or get hit. I can tell you from experience that an accident will cure your need for speed.

When using loaners, rentals or lifestyle carts I get passed all the time. When sight seeing or making my way slowly home after a tough pickle ball match I get passed often. When concentrating because I have a tee time I very occasionally get passed, and more often am passing folks.
If I see lots of folks behind me because I'm not in a hurry or have a slow cart I pull off on the grass and let them pass. If they are passing me on the road I'll take my foot off the gas so they can pass safely. I'm always amazed at the folks that will speed up when you try to pass. They want a collision.

Then you better find a way to get to your destination making nothing but right turns.
I get passed just about every time I take the cart out. Mine goes 20.3 level ground, 19.2 uphill and can max out at 22 on a steep downgrade. Most of the time I am passed I'm going right about 20, and the passing cart 25+. So what, if they want to chance getting caught, it doesn't concern me in the slightest
I also hate to say so, but I agree with the posters that state the slow vehicle causes the accidents. The guy driving 50 on the interstate won't GET into an accident, but he'll CAUSE a whole bunch as others make half-a$$ed moves to get by them

This is so true. On US 20 in NY, the 14 mile stretch of road from Auburn to Seneca Falls has just 1 area to pass. I can't count the number of times I would get stuck behind some jerk driving 40 (limit is 55), but when we get to the passing zone the jerk is up to 80, then back to 40 after the passing zone. I had to learn how to accelerate to 95 real quick to pass them.

I've got a new 2017 Yamaha EFI that is clocked at doing just shy of 20 with two people aboard on flat ground. In it, we get passed maybe once every couple of days by people clearly going over 20. It's tempting to get bent out of shape, honk and holler and wonder where cops are when you need them, but we're freshly retired and trying to learn to just relax and let little stuff like that go. I'm just not going to be in a hurry any more and not going to let myself worry about others who are in a hurry.

My cart can do 19.5 mph maximum and the governor stops it from going over that, when going downhill. Probably does 19 mph most of the time.
Getting passed by someone is neither a man or woman thing. It's a human nature thing. Most people feel they are going too slow and they are trying to get somewhere as quickly as possible.
Usually, I get passed once or twice a week. I don't let it bother me as long as they don't endanger me. If I need to get there more quickly, I would take my car.
Just sayin.............I occasionally stop for a couple of minutes if I am behind a smelly gas cart as I don't want to inhale their fumes.
BTW - I always wear seat belts as too many people get injured when ejected from a cart. It's a safety issue for me.

He may be related to some of the jerks driving up 95 moving over to the far left lane then dropping below 50 in a 70 zone creating a real dangerous situation. One trip up north passing thru Georgia one of these clowns happened to do his stunt in front of a state trooper. His trip was soon lengthened.LOL

A neighbor has an electric cart that goes either 20 or 25 MPH by flipping a switch on the dash. He told me he only flips to 25 MPH to pass slower carts...And he said he rarely uses the 25 MPH mode because at 20 MPH, he is the slowest cart and gets passed all the time.

I never once have been passed when driving anywhere on the Hysterical Side but have had 4 near misses with cars and carts going the wrong way around the Water Tower Circle. The main dilemma with getting passed is not the passing itself but the commentary from the passer. When I see someone wanting to get in front I slow down to let them go go go. Why wouldn't I help them before they hurt themselves or others. I don't creep along but I won't be forced into a mistake either. That was my point before.

IMO About as often as I get passed by speeders on the roadways. if your speeder don't matter what your driving, your going to speed. but, the speeder has to have some mechanical ability or friend that know how to speed gas golf cart up. Now for the electrical golf cart is not as easy. Bigger amp motor, bigger tires, or reprograming. Either way speeder will find a way. Actually IMO 20 MPH in golf cart with out safety protection, ( Seat belts, arm rests and even bar across the opening, and even windshield wipers) too fast. But, depends on the skill of the drivers. I find that their are lots of air heads on the MMP, Diamond lanes, and roadways. They just don't pay attention IMO or lived sheltered life? :crap2::crap2:

I only pass (very seldom) when somebody goes very slow because I don't want to stay behind them so that they don't feel be under pressure or have to speed up because of me behind.

I get passed on the street a lot more than the trail. It is because I never go more than 20 MPH on the street. I don't want to pay the fine.

I agree with the Doc, I don't see why it matters. If it's done safely, so be it.

I pass often, electric power rules.
If you are passing aren't you exceeding the speed lime of 20mph for golf carts.. My cart has a governor on it set at 20mph and am passed by people

Not if you're passing a cart going 12 mph.
I like speed limes, I put them in margaritas , limit of 2:a20::a20::a20:

I can agree, but I'm seeing some real issues develop. Twice in the past week i've seen carts pull out to pass a slower cart without checking for traffic. The car that almost took out those carts was mine. At the 30 mph limit on our major internal roads you close distance pretty quickly with a car.

I have no idea how many times I am passed on a MMP?
I do know that I will not pass anyone who is going at least 16mph.
I do know that I will not pass at all unless I am certain it can be done safely.
I do know that when I am approaching a walker who is on either side of the MMP I will slow down to almost a stop because a) I don't want to frighten them b) too often golf cart drivers coming from the opposite direction seem not to have a concern and will just speed up to bypass walkers.
I do know that a major portion of the day MMP traffic is too high that passing is often not an option.
I do understand having a concern for safety but then I have a live let live philosophy.

If they're only doing 12 mph, that cart's not a lime...it's a lemon. :1rotfl:...:a20:...:1rotfl:...:a20:

I guess you have never been on the highway and you get some jackass who wants to be the speed control officer and drives in the passing lane the same slow speed as the car in the right lane ?
?????.......That's my #1 pet peeve.

With The Villages expanding at record pace and you owning an electric cart I'd suggest you trade it in for gas before it loses most of it's value.

Our cart is set at the legal 19.9 mph and we are passed by illegal carts all the time. I keep waiting for one of these nut jobs to get pulled or roll their cart.

If one wants to drive from say, Lopez to Fenney, you are either crazy or really love sitting in a golf cart. Our electric cart gets us wherever we want to go. I think we will keep it.

I absolutely will pass a cart if it is, IMHO, going way too slow and/or if they are BRAKE BANDITS. Occasionally, the r--e--a--l-- slowpokes force my foot down to avoid accidents. I ALWAYS quick honk twice and announce my intention to pass by yelling, "ON YOUR LEFT". I also honk before I turn on pond-path-blind-corners to alert others of my presence. slow, yackin' folk are enjoying the dawdle, however, I don't necessarily enjoy that ride from the other side..

This is a quote from the State of Florida website concerning traffic laws: "A solid white line marks the edge of the roadway or separates lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. You may travel in the same direction on both sides of this line, but you should not cross the line unless you must do so to avoid a hazard. Double solid white lines indicate that changing lanes is not allowed." Since you said you passed this guy who was in the diamond lane, you must have crossed a solid white line to make the pass. If a cop sees you, and isn't lazy or busy eating a donut, he might give you a ticket. And if he clocks you at over 20 MPH, you could also get a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Gee, officer, I considered the clown driving 12 mph ahead of me to be a HAZARD that I definitely needed to AVOID.
And once again, you imply that no one can ever make a left turn unless they are "avoiding a hazard". I think this law, as stated, is poorly written at least as it pertains to roads with cart lanes in TV. A common interpretation is to consider the white line to be the right edge of the car lane, not a division between 2 lanes of vehicular traffic. Imagine the accidents if they did not put a line on the pavement defining the right edge of the car lane and left edge of the cart lane. (Yes, you can argue for a broken line, BUT...cars are not supposed to cross that line or drive in the cart lane, even to make a right turn. A car should get to their intersection THEN turn right from the car lane (please be careful of not cutting off a cart)) A broken line would imply that it is OK for a car to drift into the cart lane, and even worse, use it to pass a car turning left. What they really need is a way to indicate that carts can safely leave the cart lane to pass or turn left, but cars can't cross the line. Maybe a line painted with white rabbits and green turtles?

I agree with your post - and I've noticed that at every intersection on Morse north of 466 the solid line of the cart lane ends (or is dotted) through the intersection, allowing legal turns. I agree a cart doing 12 mph is probably a hazard, but I frequently get passed at 19.5 by carts doing 25+. If I'm on a side street, I merely slow up and wave them around.
