Hi All,
I will be picking up a rental car at MCO and driving directly to TV.
Should I get the Sunpass from the car rental company and is it necessary??
I will be using my own Garmin GPS.

just go thru the sun pass lanes,, the rental car folks will get the bill, they consider it cost of doing business

Lol The rental company passes that bill onto you at 10x the inflated cost of the toll.

Do not do this. You will be shocked when your credit card bill gets charged for enormous fees.

I got caught by Hertz on this in April. Paid cash at tolls that accepted cash but got caught on an expressway that only accepts SunPass. Cost of toll I think was $2.25 but my credit card was billed for $27.00 (use of SunPass plus toll). Ouch! Learned my lession. Buying a SunPass as soon as I get back in the state when I come down in December.

Carry a bunch of quarters just in case you hit an unmanned toll booth.

you can use your own sun pass in a rental car...get a sun pass

you go on the sun pass app and put the the rental car info in, the dates of the rental, and they charge your sun pass...

did this last summer when we drove from Disney to The Villages for our first look around...

:ohdear: That's not true! Why would you post that? For what purpose? Doing what you said would cost readers money.

And OP - Why ask here? Frequently Asked Questions (https://www.sunpass.com/faq) will get you the straight answers, NOT B.S.

So I live in MA and I'm just visiting TV so would it be less expensive to get the SunPass from the car rental co. than not get one and be billed???

Rental car companies will charge you a fee (per day up to a maximum amount) plus tolls.

You can order one online and have it mailed to you, so you'll have it when you arrive.

This is the safest way. When I purchased and activated online the website said it would be active the next day after 6 am. I don't know if that is the case when purchased in the turnpike plazas.

So if you only have one person coming in, it is actually cheaper to just have them take the bus when you consider the tolls, gas, parking at MCO and your time.

Rent a car companies are notorious for large penalty toll charges.

Even if you get your own pass, make sure the rentals pass is not registered at the toll.

Remember you have to REGISTER THE CAR AND THE TAG in the SunPass, so I do not think this will work for a rental. Also, previous comments about just driving through the sunpass will get you big fines and a real surprise from the car rental company.

I would use the villages shuttle, just make sure your guest knows exactly where to get the shuttle and what they look like, too make people MISDIRECT people to the village TAXI.

If you are only going to be here once then I wouldn't get a Sunpass. If you are coming back and staying for any length of time why wouldn't you get one? We live here permantly and still have an EZ Pass for the northern states and we only go up there once a year. Coming back from the launch at Kennedy last night we counted cars at the toll booths and some of the lines were 20+ cars, why would anyone want to sit in those lines when you don't have to?

Sorry, I didn't phrase this very well. I was talking about if somebody living here had one friend or family member flying into Orlando airport, it would be less expensive for that friend or family member to take the shuttle from Orlando for $35 than it would be for the villager to go to Orlando to pick them up when you take into considerations almost 6 dollars each way in tolls, gas and parking at the airport.

No there is not. There are many that do not have humans. The toll booth near the Orlando Executive Airport for 1.

Not Hertz! I forgot that the car I was driving didn't have a SunPass, stopped and talked to the toll taker about paying what I owed. He said not to worry about it. He said one of two things would happen. I would either A. get a bill from Hertz or B. Maybe not. That was 2 years ago. Never have received a bill.

Do NOT go through without paying the toll. You'll get a costly ticket in the mail, that's happened to me (I didn't run the toll, the guy who took the car after me got it the day I turned it in LOL).

You don't need a sunpass for one trip.

If you decide to order the SunPass online and have it in your possession when you pick up the car, SunPass has a mobile app where you can add a vehicle, check the rental box, and enter the rental plate number. The tolls will only be billed to your pass, not the rental company.

Just a word of caution for anyone renting a car at MCO (or any other FL airport)......... several years ago, before we moved to TV, we flew down and rented a car that had a Sunpass transponder in it. I never thought to make sure it was turned OFF (the transponders the rental car companies use are different than the ones we can buy, and have an ON/OFF switch). Well, you guessed it...... not only did I pay cash for the tolls, but the Sunpass was charged as well. We were in FL for about 2 weeks and did a lot of driving around, and we ended up paying double tolls and for the use of the Sunpass. Expensive, lesson learned. If you don't want to pay for it, make sure it is turned OFF.

Thanks for the info Tom53. I did not know there was a mobile app. I downloaded and it does just as you say. It gets bad reviews on the app store, which I do not understand. The app adds to the SunPass flexibility.
