After 10 years here .......Is it a fact or perhaps just my perception that fewer people wave to you as you pass on a cart or walking ?
Thoughts ?

I have an Ohio State emblem on the front of mine and a lot of people shout out to me. My sidekick Helene is usually with me and sometimes we will be having a conversation but I try to smile and wave at folks.

Kids were here during high season made a game out of counting golf carts that drove by while watching a shuffle board game in less than two hours stopped at 300. Your arm would be pretty sore if you waved that many times

I always wave and most people wave back. It might be that when you're new here it's a lot more noticeable. So many people wave that the perception is that everyone is doing it. As time goes by, you begin to see reality and it seems like fewer people wave.

we also have an Ohio State emblem on the front of our cart and people will yell O-H- and I am supposed to call back I-O but most of the time I am too late.. so if you yell O-H
to a cart and don't get a reply.. excuse me !!! haha.. I always. get a kick out of iti

I am used to waving, been living in NC for 25 years. Wasn't very much waving up in NY when I lived there though.

I'm from NYC. The only one who waves at strangers there is Mick Dundee :loco: Love it here but no, I do not wave at everyone.

Don't wave because I keep both hands on the wheel but I do smile. Not hard to do as I am enormously happy.

NYC has a population of millions. When in the city, it makes sense you don't wave as you just want to get where your going. I grew up in a small town in the Midwest of about 5,000, heck, we knew most everybody and waved all the time.
We have friends that once lived in a neighborhood on Long Island---they waved to residents in their neighborhood. We grew up waving so we still do it without even thinking. We wave even if you don't wave back. Wave---it's catching! Maybe next time you will wave too.

I've had a lot wave while passing by in carts with a five fingers, if they have them. I've also had the occasional one finger wave as they pass my cart with theirs! Life is good.

I think your perception that fewer people are waving now than few years back is wrong
Why not day passes that hand full of people give me the one finger wave. :a20:

:wave:It's not about the return wave, it's about having others who are out and about Living The Life Of Riley. Are we lucky or what? The whole thing is knowing how good we have it now, today instead of when it is to late. So wave back, don't wave, whatever does it matter, not if your fulfilled. People in NJ don't use their entire hand to wave.

I have found in general that people wave in small towns and areas of limited population but waive waving as population increases.

My husband and I wave to others when we are on our "street" or close to our home. That way we feel we have things covered just in case it is a neighbor.
Otherwise, we don't wave at every cart we pass; there are just too many!

Wave Breaking News:
1. Village gate greeters vote overwhelming to replace the wave with the nod.
2. Wave now a preexisting condition.
3. Science news make light of a wave as a particle.
4. Major influx of British villagers shows increased usage of the Queens wave.
5. Women wave with left hand more than men.
6. Hand waving popularity directly related to length of women's skirts.
7. As temperature rises hand waving lowers.
8. Formal side to side wave goes bye-bye as thumbs up is now OK.

People waving....my perception, my reality Is there more waving? Is there less waving? If less is the cause an increase in population? The current mood of the nation? For those of us who have been here for better than 10 years is it a generational change?
If the perception is that there is less waving is there also a perceptional change in the mood and behavior of people engaged on TOTV?

waving is nice and friendly .. However, a Wolverine might just give a Buckeye a different kind of friendly wave :)

When we first moved here, and before there was anything south of 466A, we noticed that we would often get a wave...and happily returned it.
We also noticed that it seemed to occur more frequently toward what was then, the southern half of TOTV.
I'm guessing that 'in general,' newcomers are more likely to wave and that the longer they are here...the less likely they are inclined to do so.
I support this wholly anecdotal observation, on the fact that it seems in my travels south of 466A...people are still more prone to waving.

Depends on the person. I still get a lot of waves if I wave first. Not so often if the person is 30 or under but it gets a response from seniors usually.
I got a knock on wood by the ticket taker at the Old Mill Playhouse yesterday when going to see Alien:Covenant there.

I have no empirical data on this issue and can only speak for myself.
I shall assume that waving includes all forms of social initiation such as winking, nodding, smiling, grinning, or the utterance of many words or word-like words, including all variations on hello. Waving is a binary behavior. One is either a waver or is not. I grew up in a culture where friendly greetings are the norm, but I realize that, being a small town Southerner, I am in a small minority here in The Villages. In fact, when I hear a Southern accent, I stop that person and demand that they speak to me in my native tongue. Realizing that I now live in a less culturally homogeneous slice of society, I have morphed towards the following behavior:
I wave at those who have shown me a traffic courtesy
I wave at all those I know and whom I think know me
I wave at first responders and military
I wave at those who have Saints, Most SEC teams, USAF, or Grateful Dead decals on their carts
I return all waves regardless of number of fingers used
If my wave is unreturned, my reaction varies from none at all to sub-vocalizing the easiest to lip read two word phrase in the English language
Absolutely fewer waves. Has lost the "home town" feel. However, I am determined to continue to wave. Just like the feeling.

I wave, and if someone doesn't wave back or at least a nod, I think of them as a horrible person who has to live in their devil skin 24 hours a day and I only had to pass them with a wave.

I apologize to anyone I didn't wave back to. If the sun hits your windshield, I can't see you. Also I apologize to those to whom I have waved a bag of dog doo. The other hand was on the leash. I'm not very coordinated...
