Hi,
We are considering having a screen installed for our garage door and wonder if anyone can offer pros and cons. Our garage faces east, and we have already had the doors insulated, as well as added extra insulation in the attic. We use the garage solely for storage, but think it would benefit from having airflow to help keep it cooler. Would like to hear from others who have had it done. Would you recommend an installer, and would you recommend motorized roll-up versus sliding door opening? Thank you.

I have one and it's great...glad i got a roll up not a slider......friend of mine has a slider.....it's a real pain in the ass to slide the door evertime you take your car out and then manually close it.......give a roll up some thought.

Will you be opening and closing it each day? Moving it when you go in and out of the garage? Drive around and count the number of screens and how many are being used to cool the garage and not just moved out of the way.

Do not have one but I would go roll up using a motor. Otherwise it would probably just get in the way.

Recently had a motorized rollup installed by Barlow's Tri-County Screens. Kevin offers a choice of screen materials and colors to suit your needs.

We are very happy with it. Kevin the owner does the installation and is responsive and conscientious.

We are very happy with our motorized roll up which was installed by Lonnie at Cool Breeze. Look them up on the internet.

We had Lonnie Ashe of Cool Breeze do our motorized roll up screen. Our garage faces east and we leave the screen down even on the hottest days. On nice days we open the door to the house, open the sliders to the lanai on the west side and have a wonderful breeze flowing through. He was very quick/responsive when husband forgot to raise it and backed onto it (minor damage) and fixed it right up. And yes, for a charge, but that was fair. I think he advertises on here. We got 3 remotes- one for each golf cart, and one that hangs next to the door to the house.

Here's his phone number: (888) 896-8935

The former owner had the roll up. I was told they took it out before I bought the house because it didn't work. I don't have any yet. Wow, $1895! I got two good garage doors installed in NOVA for less than that. How much is the other kind please?

We like the sliders----rarely use the front door when going in and out of the house. No big deal to us to open the sliders to get the car out--don't close sliders again until car is in garage. Had ours installed in 2008-company we used is apparently out of business but the cost was $780.00. Working fine-no problems whatsoever.

Please feel free to do a search on this subject, as I have posted about this before.
This is an opinionated issue....others I know feel differently.

There are basically 4 types of garage door screen options.

1) "Sliders"
2) Roll Up
3) One piece lift up with door
4) Sectioned that go up just like your garage door.

#4 is what I call the "Thumper" door, because it is commonly installed by Thumper's Screen doors.

I prefer #4.

There are good and bad about each type.

Why have a screen??

We have a Thumper door as Frank described. Using the screen and opening the windows in the lanai provide great breeze. Not as cool as having the door open completely, (probably 70%) but very happy with ours. It was installed by the previous owner. Can't see in from the outside but can see out perfectly.

Keeps the critters out, and lowers the temp in the garage!
We have sliders, and like them a lot, they are really easy to open and close.
And like someone else said we rarely use our front door.

I think it just depends on your personal preferences. I also prefer the sliders as we don't use our front door often. We used Thumpers 3 years ago and I think it was around 800.00. They stand by their work as we had an issue last year where something settled and the door wouldn't close properly. They came immediately and fixed it.

We have something totally different. Our screen is on a track. It slides up onto the track when not in use.it even has a door to go in and out. Our electric bill went down a lot. We got it at Michelle's Screens, Marion Market. CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENT

Are the roll up type just as good keeping out snakes as the sliders?

We had Thumper install a garage screened door for us 8 years ago. Love the door.

Thumper and his staff are quality people and
are honest, fair and prompt.

Thumper has never left me disappointed

One minor problem with the full screen roll-up. Easy to forget it is down when viewing from the inside. Visited with someone who had a note in the center of their steering wheel. I asked, he said his wife backed into the screen twice. Yeh sure, blame it on the wife. We have been leaving the door up with no screen. No snakes yet but had a bird nest with eggs built in the garage.

A 1-1/2 car garage is a 12' door, a regular 2 car garage is a 16' door. I have 3 neighbors install the horizontal sliders by All Around Aluminum of Oxford, FL, so I went with them in 2012. They charged $850 all parts and labor. Another neighbor put a powered roll up screen by a dealer at Market of Marion and paid $1650 for his 12' door. He's not in the yard very much and thought that was better for him. Here's a photo of my horizontal screen and I'm happy with the job All Around performed.

I like it because in a CYV I find you'll spend a lot more time in your front yard or driveway than a single family home. This way I just slide one 3' section to go in or out, and then close it behind me. Also, our washer and dryer are in the garage and it makes a big difference in the heat. My wife is with me most times when I'm driving and she just gets out of the car and slides the screen open or close.

I installed it for 4 reasons:

The first month in our CYV, a community of 88 villas, a neighbor found a rattlesnake in his garage.

Once I picked up a 12 pack of canned soft drink that was in the garage to take inside, and a giant palmetto bug ran out.

In the first year on Odessa Circle, that's the road that borders around our villas and Southern Star Golf Course, a large alligator was seen walking down Odessa Circle.

As a by product, having your garage door open but yet safe from all of these above creatures, and even the 2 legged creatures who would find it hard to explain how they got into your garage when the screen was closed, the garage and the house is cooler. I crack the attic access steps about 6" and it creates a nice draft through the garage and helps cool the attic. I know it would bad in case of a fire, but I accept the risk in order to cool the house better.

I have an insulted garage and it's always hotter outside, so I don't want the heat thru a screen. I'm glad they work for others, I just think they are silly.

We used Thumper for our roll up.. Absolutely love it. No idea at this point what the cost was - They are fabulous in terms of installation and customer service. We had a minor problem with it and they were out immediately - at no charge - to correct the problem. And that was more than a year after installation. Fully recommend them

We backed out and drove through the slider! Romac installed a roll up and we haven't ruined it yet!
