Leave note. If lanai not air conditioned and windows are closed you might call the police as dogs lives are in jeopardy..

There was a thread here last week about pets devouring their dead owners. But, that might be barking up the wrong tree.

Based on my experience no matter what you CHOOSE to do you will not get a positive response from these people.
I truly like dogs. But, perhaps, like grand kids it is great to spoil them and then send them HOME.
Do they not know the dogs are barking. I doubt it.
Do they care that the dogs are a bother. Either they do not care or for now they have no choice-illness-death or????
There are ultrasound devices that are supposed to control such annoying dogs. I tried on years ago. It was ?????? about $40.00 and it was totally ineffective.
I'm sure I will get all kinds of hostile reply's from dog owners. Before you send them-why don't your offer to help the original poster and solve the problem dog owner to dog owner.

The people next door, once you share your concern and nothing happens.....then you contact the authorities, any authority.
After all, they are your neighbors.....at least give them a chance before calling in the cavalry.

There is a specific ordinance against what you describe and I would waste no time in calling the authorities. If these neighbors really cared they would not have allowed this to occur in the first place(period).

:ho: I agree talk to the neighbor first before calling authorities. We all live "Close" in TV and it's best to get along if at all possible.

No doubt yapping dogs are major pain the owners are aware of it. Contact them and ask them to correct it and if no cure call the authorities

It gets too hot here for dogs to be left on the lanai all day. If the dogs are short-snouted, it can be lethal. I would try to catch the owners one evening and explain this fact and also mention the nonstop barking when they're not home. If this doesn't work, then it is time to call animal control for your county. You may make enemies out of your neighbors but you'd truly be doing a kindness to the dogs.

Maybe they don't realize their dogs continue to bark after they leave, but I doubt that. It is a shame neighbors, or people, would allow such noise that they know bother others.

I am a bit biased about this but speaking on behalf of dog owners (who always pick up poop and go to leash free parks specifically so we are good neighbours) I can tell you that a dog that barks constantly is under extreme stress and needs attention or help. Definitely, contact the owner but instead of making it an angry attack, let him/her know that you are concerned about the dog's well being in the heat or have concerns about his anxiety. Dogs are not generally "bad"... they are asking for help under their present circumstances. The humans are the problem here, not the dogs, but to maintain good neighbourly relations, it might be best to start nicely...

Do you think they don't know their dogs are barkers? Really! Fact is they never trained the dogs and spoiled them by encouraging the barking instead of stopping it. Dog training 101! So, you might try speaking to them but the truth is they have no respect for others and only want a solution that suits their needs. Cynical? Yes, but most likely you need help from authorities. Good Luck!

Leave a note on their garrage door and your phone number. Let them know what's happening in the note. If you get no response then call the authorities. The police - make sure when you call them the dogs are barking. If they come and they are not barking they will do nothing. Good luck. There is no reason you should have to put up with that - their problems are not yours. They need to either get rid of the dogs or take care of the problem!

It is my experience that the dog owner who constantly allows their dog to bark is not going to be logical if you try to speak with them about it. They will be defensive and you will create a war. After all, their dog has rights and he needs to bark, it is their nature. That is how they think, so, believe me, not worth approaching them. Just call animal control. Perhaps they will respect a fine more than their neighbors

They are not going to die. Good grief, dogs and wolves lives for thousands of years before air conditioning. The coyotes survive in the Villages and I'm pretty sure no one is bringing them in their air conditioned homes all day. A lanai is not like a closed car. A barking dog would drive me crazy, and I have dogs. I hope the new people read this and do something about their dogs.

You could take the approach that they don't know their dogs bark all day... tell them you're concerned that the dogs are frightened or upset since they bark nonstop. Perhaps relate an anecdote like someone in your house was sick and couldn't sleep because of the barking and you thought they should know. Give them (neighbors--not dogs) a chance to save face. Maybe they'll take the hint? Good luck. This would drive me crazy!

I suspect we are all happy we don't live next to you.... really, call the authorities before talking to the neighbors? They are your neighbors....
We had the same problem a few years ago when the house behind us was being rented. (So glad when it sold..great neighbors now.) Talking to them was TOTALLY a waste of time. (Redwitch knows who I am talking about.) Those dogs barked from about 5 in the morning to well after midnight. We could not even sit on our own lanai and have a conversation! They barked non-stop even in the house and you could hear them then, as well. I guess the property manager finally got enough complaints (mine included) that they were asked to leave. The kicker was that there was someone home all day and made no effort to correct the problem.
We love dogs and most of our neighbors have them. We did have two when we moved here, but they both passed on of old age. Now, we just get to love our neighbors' dogs.

If the dogs are new also. They are unfamiliar with their surroundings, missing the owners or afraid. If owners are unaware the sign should be enough for responsible pet owners. Good luck

It's a state law in Florida that it is illegal to leave your dogs unattended outside in the heat. They are probably hotter than h-ll! Call the ASPCA or the pound on them . It is inhumane treatment to leave a dog outside here in Florida.:posting:

I agree! It's very inconsiderate of these dogs owners to make neighbors listen to their pets all day yapping. Don't know why they don't put them in their laundry room. I guess they don't like their pets pooping or peeing in their laundry rooms as much as their neighbors don't like hearing them yap all day while they're gone! I think pet owners really think it's their right to put them their because it's on their property & they don't have to listen to them all day! Good question, DIAMOND2005!

I love animals too but this is a case where the owners need to be trained to hear the neighbors concerns.
The only solution is to let the owners have a dose of their own until they get tired of it too.
Solution: buy a subsonic dog whistle and record it in a loop on tape. Play it on a home stereo directed to the
Offending neighbors house. Turn up the volume level and let it play all night
I can guarantee that neighbor will correct the problem
By the way, don't bother to reproach me for this info, If you too are not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem!

Calling authorities might do it but as we were growing up didn't you run into any of your friends that said they heard from another friend that you said this or that about them & then they dislike you for the rest of their lives. I know this is a little different but there's nothing worse than having neighbors that won't speak to you anymore, then again maybe you don't care. Besides the authorities might say something to the dog owner but I really doubt there's really anything they can really do about it since the dog is on their property. Do we really think they'll fine them for keeping their dog in part of their house. It'll be interesting to see if they can really do something. I hope someone will follow up on this story!

A dog that is barking all day is generally frantic... it isn't in their nature to bark for no reason. They may have anxiety when they are left alone or actual fear but they don't just "bark". For that reason it would be worthwhile to knock on the door and explain that you are concerned for their well-being and, of course, mention that the noise is disturbing you and your neighbours. If they don't respond appropriately, then calling animal control might seem reasonable but you should do it knowing that the dog will likely not meet with a good fate in a shelter. Are the shelters around TV kill shelters?

Happened to me. Neighbor had all new carpet and as her dog was elderly and incontinent, she put him on the lanai. Everyone knows how hot it is here in Florida in the summer. Of course the poor dog barked all day. I knocked on her door and told her politely. I left note after note and then finally called the Neighborhood Watch. They talked to her and also left notes. When she went north her poor doggie passed away so that was the end of that sad tale. No solution on this end. Some people are too selfish to own a dog.

First of all, the poor dogs are out in this wicked heat. What if they dump their water? Not as bad a being locked in a car, but close. Yes, I would speak to the neighbors & if no result, then call the authorities. Cruelty to animals in MHO.

For what it's worth....I've had experience with several different neighbors with barking dogs. It never helped to talk with them. All it caused was animosity. They were always on the defensive even though I tried to be nice about it. And then, when someone else called the police, all fingers pointed to me because I was the only one who had complained to them. My advice is to keep quiet and call authorities and have them handle it. It's too bad that people can't talk things out and be respectful these days.

You pretty much summed up my comment when you said they called Neighborhood Watch & I take it talking & leaving notes on door didn't do any good. Just like a lot of other things in TV, just like cart speed, it's a waste of time to make rules if you're not going to follow them. Just like most people say, TV isn't going to make anybody mad.

Thank you very much for mentioning how effective ultrasonic devices are.
We live in an area where lots of new homes are being built around us and we have been wondering what to do if a new neighbor has a dog that barks too much or craps in our yard. If that happens, we will definitely get one of the devices that you described.

There are many deterrent units for sale. Can you tell us which one was successful? Back when I ran (really just walked fast) I carried a Dog Dazer. I was not impressed. The sound (not audible to humans) simply startled the dog for couple seconds. Supposedly it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to the dog. I would like something that is more of a deterrent. Disclaimer: The last Dazer I bought was 15yrs ago. The current model may be improved, however the device looks exactly how it did 15yrs ago.
