YES, young people through the ages will experiment with different thoughts and ideas and you want to destroy that chance for them. I disagree with 100%. You should take the time and meet with and talk to some young college graduates....they blow me away and are really sharp. THEY make me feel good about the future. Do I agree with some of the things that happen on campus....hell no, but my parents hated some of the things I did and said in those years.

He also works in the bag room of a local country club in the summer. His brother went to trade school and became a plumber. He's very successful, owns his own business and owns a house.

Colleges are interested in growing and becoming universities. The people that work at universities make more money. The people that run colleges want as many kids going as possible because the more students they have, the more money they make. Standards for getting into college have been lowered to this end. Many colleges, especially state schools will take anyone that has the money. I know kids that didn't have a high school diploma that got into college. The college just offered them the high school classes that they needed in order to have enough credits to graduate.

Now if a kid couldn't make it through high school, what do you think his chances are at getting a college degree?

And they'll give most kids a bachelor's degree if they simply attend class.

I worked with a young man who had a degree and he was working as a shoe salesman in a golf store. His degree was in communications and he was holding out for a job as a sports radio personality.This kid was a dumb as a box of rocks and never should have graduated from college. In fact, he got in on a football scholarship which he lost in his senior year because he was caught taking drugs. I haven't seen him in over ten years but I'm guessing that he's still selling golf shoes.

So, not every person is cut out for, or should go to college, but those who do get a degree have a better than average chance of getting a good job, and career. For those who cannot, or will not get a college degree, there should be more technical schools available for them. Currently, things like auto mechanics, shop, and other trades that once were taught at the high school level have been discontinued because of budget problems with the school districts.

It is a Republican platform, and ideology to reduce taxes, which means that for many school districts dependent upon tax revenue for their continued existence, the population of Republicans in that area care more for their tax savings than for their childrens' education, nor for the continued growth of the economy that is driven by well educated people in both employment and businesses that they have built.

It is more an economic problem, rather than a subjective opinion that we face (along with many other problems) but in the words of an old adage: you get what you pay for.....

Selling shoes, or other consumer goods takes perseverance, persuasion, and good nature. So many of us should not look down on certain occupations, but, rather celebrate those who are excelling at them, and work to provide other avenues that can make their lives fulfilling. For some, that is college.

For those who cannot, or will not get a college degree, there should be more technical schools available for them. Currently, things like auto mechanics, shop, and other trades that once were taught at the high school level have been discontinued because of budget problems with the school districts.

It is a Republican platform, and ideology to reduce taxes, which means that for many school districts dependent upon tax revenue for their continued existence, the population of Republicans in that area care more for their tax savings than for their childrens' education, nor for the continued growth of the economy that is driven by well educated people in both employment and businesses that they have built.

It is more an economic problem, rather than a subjective opinion that we face (along with many other problems) but in the words of an old adage: you get what you pay for.....

Selling shoes, or other consumer goods takes perseverance, persuasion, and good nature. So many of us should not look down on certain occupations, but, rather celebrate those who are excelling at them, and work to provide other avenues that can make their lives fulfilling. For some, that is college.

Politicizing a college education is just flat out wrong to do. All young people attending college not only are there to learn, but also to try out different thought processes. Anyone who says otherwise are lying. Campus violence is certainly abhorrent, but to have an attitude that politics of any kind should interfere with the growth of our young people, or to insure they are not allowed to open their mind is wrong.

Ignoring the praise of Karl Marx, I strongly object subjecting young people to a narrow, selected band of knowledge and experience.

College helps open a young persons mind, and to suggest corralling or thwarting that, to me is offensive.

YES, young people through the ages will experiment with different thoughts and ideas and you want to destroy that chance for them. I disagree with 100%. You should take the time and meet with and talk to some young college graduates....they blow me away and are really sharp. THEY make me feel good about the future. Most old white guys are simply bitching because the world did not stand still for them.

Do I agree with some of the things that happen on campus....hell no, but my parents hated some of the things I did and said in those years.

BY THE WAY....I investigated and found zero record of any time that Walter Cronkite said he did not want his daughter to go to college because of anything, let alone the behavior in those schools. Kept running into his name on college buildings or courses named after him however.

The profit motive is indeed another factor.

Recruiting for quantity vis a vis quality (suitability) diminishes a college/university's reputation and certainly harms the student .

Its my understanding that far too many students are not even aware of how much college debt they have accumulated. This is another example for the claim that parents and teachers have failed to transform kids to adults

the antics we see at universities today speech repressions, trigger warnings, etc are because too many kids never grew up to the realities of life.

Drugs in my view are a big factor including the use of marijuana

The curriculum offered at many colleges and universities
has drifted so far that it no longer prepares students properly to master the tasks o their employment

I recruited and hired a lot of people and noticed as far back as the 1980's that many simply were what we refer to now as trophy babies .

There was a time when a high school did a good job of separating students who would fit well in a trade, business or college.

Many trades today pay better than many college level job positions primarily because of supply and demand.
many manufacturing jobs go unfilled everyday.
