Ours plays a tune when the countdown timer is done but can't figure how to download new tunes. It's also nice to see the clothes getting clean in real time through the window on top of the machine, it's nice to get away from the computer every once in awhile.

We replaced our six year old original W/D in April. I spent a day reading reviews from Best Buy, Lowes, Home Depot and Amazon. At the end I concluded that front loaders had problems, mostly with mold build up and with water leakage. I then concentrated on top loaders and one of my wife's biggest complaints with our old Whirlpool was the agitator tearing up or wearing out clothes. I found the major brands now feature HE models 'High Efficienty' which come without an agitator.

After more and more reading of reviews I determined that LG and Samsung didn't make good front loaders, or any better than others, but when it came to top loading HE models, LG was the best. LG had high reviewer's ratings on every website and the least amount of problems. I then tried to find what I wanted at Lowes since they had the 10% veteran discount. As it turned out, they had the model washer I wanted but not the matching dryer, I would of had to get a lower price LG dryer and I wanted the model with the glass door that matched. I then focused on Best Buy and Home Depot and Best Buy had the washer and it's price was equal to the Lowe's price had I gotten the veteran discount. They also had the matching glass door dryer.

The LG washer was $899 at Lowes and Best Buy had it for $819, I then went to the Lady Lake Best Buy and was able to get them to negotiate the washer down to $720, and dryer was $719 and was able to get it for $650 plus we got them to delete the $30 take-away fee of the old washer and dryer and got a $100 store credit card and of course free delivery 3 days later. We've now had the set about 3 months and my wife loves them and we got a fantastic deal, so much so I went back last month and got a Samsung 75" 4K TV at a great price. I noticed the washer price has gone up to the same price as Lowes, the dryer is still at it's original price, and as I mentioned BB is willing to negotiate on their prices.

I would recommend joining Consumer Report Online and do some studying before you purchase, it costs $7 dollars to join for a month. We bought a Samsung Front Loading Washer and Dryer and are happy with them so far at about the one year mark. They are quiet and with the pedestals easy to load and unload. Zero interest for 2 years. Go onto YouTube and put in Washer Or Dryer Fires/Problems it's very educational. Welcome to The Villages.

Bought my last 3 sets on Craigslist and Facebook for about $200/set. Current front load set is LG with steam and only 2 years old. ( Bought it from a lady in a $1.5 million house who wanted a new color) The set looks and works like new. I know many people would not take the risk but I have and happy I did. Hope to use this set another 8-10 years. If it craps out tomorrow, no big deal !

Speed Queen. Ken & Kerrie's in Fruitland Park. Be sure to ask for a Buzzer on your Dryer. Speed Queen makes dryers without buzzers as we inadvertently found out. Happy with Speed Queen otherwise.

I was always a Whirlpool top load washer and matching dryer person for practically all my life.
After reading Consumer Reports I acquiesced and we purchased a Whirlpool front load & dryer.
Consumer Reports is correct; front load washers do a better job of washing/cleaning clothes.
Just recently we recently bought a new washer/dryer set. We got an LG -- again, recommended by Consumer Reports.
(I swear by anything Consumer Reports recommends.)
I found it hard to believe, but it does a better job of getting our clothes clean than our Whirlpool!

There is no reason to have a mold problem with a front load washer.
Keep the door ajar until the washer is dry. It's that simple!
I will always recommend a dryer with steam. It is a godsend in many cases for taking out wrinkles.
In addition, I have never had a leakage problem with either of the front loaders.

Just got rid of my 4 yr old Whirlpool because the lid wias completely rusted and the performance was marginal. I Googled extensively and found that this was a common problem with all of the major brands. I also read that some of the glass tops had been known to shatter. I decided on Speed Queen. They are the largest manufacturers of Commercial washers and are built to last. They are nothing fancy but they do the job. Go mine aat DeSantis and was very happy with them also.

We have had a Kenmore Elite front-load washer and dryer for 13 years. Never a problem. I was initially surprised at how little water the front loaders use. You do need to keep the door of the washer open a bit after use to let the rubber seal dry but that is pretty much true of all front-loaders. It is not really an issue - just something you always do - having it open a few inches is all that is needed.

I believe they were actually made by Whirlpool. There are not that many actual manufacturers anymore - lots of brand names made by the same company. For front loaders, pedestals are a good idea.

Speed Queen

I second the recommendation for Speed Queen. I did a lot of research and they are top rated and beat everyone for longevity. I've had the set for a few months now and am very pleased. Had front loader before and clothes weren't getting clean. The front loaders have tons of fancy options, but in that minimal amount of water, didn't seem to clean as well as my new Speed Queen. Good luck and do our research.

When I moved in, I went to Lowe's and asked for the cheapest washer and dryer they sold. They sold me Hotpoint units for less than $500, and they wash and dry my clothes very well. I really don't understand why I would ever need anything else.

You wouldn't. Clothes washers and dryers are not engineered not to work. Marketing gimmicks are responsible for making a reasonable purchase into a major expense, if you let it. Frugality always makes sense no matter the size of ones bank account. Smart people are frugal and stay that way.

The design of the gasket on the Front Loading Samsung has drastically changed from the front loader we had 10 years ago. The place where the finest particles of detergent and water does not exist anymore. We still leave the door open a little but there really is no need to. Just an old habit. Two loads a day and still doing great. That smell from the old style front loader was terrible and you could stand on your head and spit chicklets no way you could get rid of the smell.

My comment was not an insult.

However, yes -- many female items need more care than men's.
In addition, most women are more picky about how their laundry is done.

My husband is forbidden to use the washer & dryer (lucky him!) unless I'm away and he's home.
I'm not sure if he just doesn't care what he washes with what or if . . . . . . Who knows??!?

If there is to be a concern about the lowest cost appliances it might be with regard to the lifespan - only time will tell. It is not as if you have a houseful of kids and are doing a lot of loads per day so it will probably be lightly used and that will probably extend the lifespan. More expensive appliances will come with more whistles and bells but you may not need them.

Neither. LG made in Korea and parts are hard to come by if it breaks down. Samsung...we have both washer and dryer and would not recommend. Two service calls in 4 years not a comforting feeling. Always had Maytag back North and never a problem over 20 years owning last set. Bought Samsung because salesman said he owned it and was happy with them. Just my opinion.

A thought: anybody who has an appliance twenty years old or older bought them back before companies started cheaping out on the manufacturing process. My MIL had a Westinghouse front load washer and dryer bought in the '60s that was still running when she sold her house in the '90s. Our 1997 set was still running in 2007, and may still be running today; they stayed with the house. We've had three refrigerators in less time than we had our first refrigerator in 1971, which also never broke the whole time we had it, which was up until we left it in in the garage for the new owners in 1997. (Although by that time the interior plastic was fatiquing.)

So I think it would be fallacy to base a brand on someone having had one for 20 years. They just don't make 'em like they used to. I'm willing to give Speed Queen a try because people who have bought them recently seem to like them from a performance standpoint. From that standpoint, I sure don't like my Sears Elite agitator-less top-load washer. I'm all for conservation, but they just don't use. enough. water.

You didn't give any details other than the brands. I spent a day reading reviews on Lowes, Home Depot, Amazon and Best Buy. At the end of the day, I realized front loaders had more problems and top loaders had less. Top loaders without an agitator, known as high efficiency or HE, had the least about of problems. Of the two brands you named, LG and Samsung both had problems with the front loaders but the LG top loading HE machines had the least amount of problems of any. Needless to say we bought the LG Washer Dryer 5.2 washer with glass doors on the washer and dryer and we shopped around. Both machines with tax, no delivery charge, no take-away old machines charge, new hoses, total at Best Buy $1527 and I got a $100 store credit card. If you want more details, go back to page 1 and look at my post #6. Whirlpool owns Maytag, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Jenn-Aire, Amana and Roper, so it's hard sometimes to single out one brand over another. Owning something made in Korea hasn't bothered me in the past, I owned a Korean made car for five years, a Hyundai.
