Since this being just your third post, comments like yours are a breath of fresh air. It's not many Villagers in their later years who can tote a bag of clubs and walk an 18 hole golf course anymore, everybody wants to drive a cart everywhere. That's the attitude, but just do me one favor, when I come up behind you in my cart I appreciate if I can just play through. Walkers do slow the game down, but we appreciate the effort.

IMO Depending on where or what you buy, they are overpriced with Lawnmower engine in them. Profit margin got to be around 60% plus? New golf carts reminds me of New Boats. 50% lost after the first year use IMO of course. :popcorn:

The level of technology is fine - it is a golf cart. You don't need more than one cylinder or overhead cams to get you around on the golf course or the MMPs at 20 mph. Overhead cams offer advantages at high RPMs - this is not really an issue with golf cart engines. They also are more complex and thus more costly than the simpler and proven overhead valve designs that are used in golf cart engines. The latest Yamahas have independent front and rear suspensions. I am not sure what additional level of sophistication you are looking for in the suspension. The one place where they could be improved would be brakes on all four wheels. My Yamaha has a wet disk brake on the rear wheels only. These things are rugged and bulletproof. If you really want something that has more whistles and bells, look at Atomic carts.

Based purely on the simplicity of the design, bolt on technology of long ago proved simple systems...golf carts should sell for about 1/2 of what they are getting.

It all boils down to the manufacturers knowing their demographics well and recognizing that they can get away with selling them...at such outrageous/gouging prices.

As long as the ignorant will continue to pay...the prices will stay grossly inflated. :shrug:

Buy used 1 or 2 years old if nearly new is desired. Save 40 % and NO sales tax ( registration not required so the state has no idea)
Many people get sucked into buying one and either want an upgrade or just feel they don't use it enough. Or, move out of TV etc.

What you need to remember is that the private owner market for a golf cart only represents 2% of the market for the manufacturers.
They like to sell 75 plus at a pop to golf courses. The Private market is growing and the manufacturers are seeing it. New stuff will be coming out directed to that market. Don't expect lower prices however.

I had to go back 2 weeks to see when I posted that. My post was in reply to what another poster said. In that context it isn't as bad as I thought. Sorry, nothing personal. I too only buy new on big purchases. I just can't justify paying 15K+ to buy a new golf cart. The depreciation is 40% the first year ! That's insane, if you're the new purchaser. For me, that would be self abuse.

The bells and whistles that I wanted would wind up costing just about the same adding them to a used cart as the cart I purchased new, loaded as I wanted. My bells and whistles on my 2016 electric Yamaha include....

1) Steering wheel with self canceling directionals. This steering wheel also includes high beams for the head lights. That alone was worth the price of the upgraded steering wheel. Those brights light up the road and path like brights on an automobile. Of course, I kick down the brights when another cart approaches me in the opposite direction.

2) Upgraded bucket seats which a have a great lumbar support. I can take those big bumps in the road and not feel a thing and no jarring to my back. Wonderful firm comfortable support and with nice long arm rests.

3) Solid windshield. We don't play golf. We just play.

4) Locking trunk where the golf clubs would go. This is very valuable to me.

5) Auto water fill system for the batteries.

6) Shelf in the front of the cart.

7) Liquid lights on both front bumpers which were included by the dealer.

8) Roof painted the same color as the body of the cart.

9) 10" tires with upgraded wheels (they have a red emblem on them to match our red cart)

10) Some kind of system that maintains the top speed even when going up hill. (it works too)

Recalling the Seinfeld episode where Jerry gets his car back smelling bad from the Valet I would opt for new or at least new seats, especially when carts are driven in hot and humid climates for lengthy periods of time, many by overweight drivers who wear out the support in the seats as well.
