We recently bought a new courtyard villa. The gutters on the house drain to the concrete patios and then run down to the small amount of grass. The concrete patio is beginning to get a bit discolored as a result. Is it permissible to cut through the concrete and bury a pipe from the gutter which will run down to the existing drain in the backyard grass? Just wondering if anyone has done something about this and what it was. Or did you just leave it as is?
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

We have cleaner for concrete purchased at Lowes or Home depot. Often a rust colored stain.

You might not need to cut through the concrete. We had the same problem with a downspout that drained onto the bed along the sidewalk for our entrance but overflowed into our driveway.

We had Chris Lietz Landscaping dug under the sidewalk added a flex pipe that ended with a "popup" drain on the lawn.

Bruce are you running your irrigation system? Does the stain look like rust/orange colored? If so, that is because of the recycled water from the irrigation system that has sulfur in it. I've never heard of the gutters making a stain on the concrete. The only solution is not to run the irrigation or to have it that it doesn't hit the sidewalk!

But the answer is yes you can tie into the French drain already there. But I would highly suggest a professional doing it so you do not jeopardize the French drain that is installed already!

The stain does look rust or orange colored but it looks like it begins at the downspout and widens as it runs down so I'm not thinking it is the irrigation system. Actually we are running out of funds to do anything about this as we just ordered a recliner, contracted to have concrete landscaping curbing and rocks installed replacing our pine needle mulch and bought a new golf cart. I'm thinking any gutter drainage modifications could be rather expensive. Maybe at some point in the future or we just may leave as is.

The stain is not from irrigation. Our house sat empty for a year with no gutters. The entire side of our concrete had orange , rust spots where the water would drain off from the roof. No stains by where the irrigation was. We have put up gutters and had the driveway painted and no longer have any stains. It might be cheaper to have the concrete painted vs. a french drain.

We do have one drainage spout that runs onto the concrete but now that it is painted no more stains.

Hi consider this: Number one,,,,,,,,,,,, always, yes always get that water away from your foundation. And yes, have a concrete guy cut a strip out, then put in a drain pipe from the downspout to the lawn or to a safe spot AWAY from your foundation. You can backfill over the drain pipe, be sure it has a positive slope and then you can brick over it or do exposed concrete as a filler. Or get a good handyman and if he says the water next to the foundation is not a problem, then tell him to leave. I cannot give you advice, not licensed in Florida so in reality, I am only telling you what I do and have done.

it is runnng away from the foundation now just over the concrete patio area. After that there is 5 feet of grass. This is a courtyard villa, very little yard.
