Saying goodbye to friends and family back home, seems to be the biggest emotional negative that Village residents speak of.
I never thought that Facebook would be of interest to me. I joined and now, I speak regularly with my daughter as well as nieces and nephews that I rarely had contact with. I have also been contacted by tons of old friends and former colleagues. My sister is also a frequent Facebook friend.
I think I am closer now with my nieces and nephews than I have ever been.
Does anybody else use/enjoy facebook?

I do. I know a lot of regulars on here do too.
At one time TOTV was jokingly called " Facebook for Geezers".
Don't blame me...I am just repeating gossip.

Yes...we use Facebook. We keep in touch with our son and his wife in Germany and our daughter who is attending vet school in London. It's also great for keeping in touch with extended family. Next to Skype it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

My wife and I use Facebook every day to keep up with the daily lives of our family and friends. It is a great tool. We're not out of the loop just because we moved. I also recommend Skype or iChat combined with a computer-cam to have a face to face chat with your loved ones who are far away. It really helps with the feelings of separation to actually see your family; show them something you bought; see your grandchildren and be able to talk to them. Loving the new technology.

No, I don't use Facebok. Until recently I never thought there was any reason for me to join.
Recently I have been considering joining Facebook for exactly the reason mentioned by Talk Host - staying in touch with my nieces. One niece recently got married and she has now posted some of her wedding pictures on Facebook. Another niece told me she maintains a Facebook page where she updates pictures of her family. She also mentioned that several other family members have a presence on Facebook.

I am a Facebook junky:):) At first I was reluctant because my college age kids were on and I didn't want to see anything a mom shouldn't see! Now that they are becoming "mature" young adults it has really been a lot of fun to keep up with what they are doing AND I have made contact with a lot of old friends and relatives. Try it....you won't be dissapointed:pepper2::pepper2:

Yes, my son helped me sign-up for a facebook account. He is in college so it is an excellent way to keep in touch with him.
One thing I didn't expect were all those "friend requests." Initially, they were overwhelming coming in from many of my son's friends, relatives and even some long lost classmates. I have a few people that I "hide" because they are too active and take up all my home page.
I love seeing the pictures my son posts while he and his friends are out having fun. So far they've all been fairly tame (knock on wood).
I'm surprised at how often I check Facebook - at least daily. It is a great way to keep up with kids and share pictures. I'm told that over age 50 is the fastest growing demographic on Facebook.

I think I was one of the first users of Facebook. I've been on it for a few years now. I started out on MySpace, but it got to be very commercial and was geared more for the kids. It is a great tool. I have been posting pictures of our house being built so that our daughter, sisters, brother, neices and nephews can all keep up with the progess. I have Facebook friends from all areas of my life: relatives, co-workers, high school classmates, old friends and new friends. It's a great way to get little updates on their lives. (and I'm secretly addictied to all the Facebook games!)

FB addictive??? I agree with all the above posters. But my real addiction on FB is called Farmville. It's an application. You build a farm, watch the crops grow (If you don't harvest them in time, they die.), tend to the animals, etc., etc., etc. It brings back the 'good old days' when I used to set up a dollhouse. See you later, have to check on my farm!!!!!!

Remember that everything you put on facebook is open to the public.Although being cautious about what you post on Facebook is excellent advice, cashman's statement is not accurate.
Facebook enables you to control what can seen by anyone (the public) and what can be seen by your friends, whom you specifically select. Now I will grant you that Facebook's control panel used by you for controlling who sees your information is not exactly easy to understand. But I believe it is accurate to say that the pubic sees much less than your friends see.

Because the younger generation won't sit down and write you and email, but they will post for the whole world to see what they are doing!!! Just another way to keep in communication with them.... Actually, I have been resisting Facebook ... fearful that it would take up a lot of time. I wasn't sure I would be interested in it. Many friends here in TV and 'back home' have been on it and encouraged me to join. It wasn't until I read this thread that I realized the extent to which our generation is joining in...so, on this somewhat stormy Sunday my resolve broke down and I now have a Facebook page.
Gee, Jan, thanks for starting this thread. I need a :beer3:

We have had Skype for months. Do not have Facebook yet. That may soon change as I think my wife would get a lot of use out of it.
As to Skype: we don't really use it much. One son has it and we get to see those two grand children once in a while. If you have enough contacts that have Skype it may be useful. It is good for real time communications but no substitute for Facebook.

Yeah. I have to agree with you on both items. I looked at Facebook's control panel several times since I joined in order to ensure I had the settings the way I wanted them. Instead of pie throwing, I immediately received an invitation from my niece to join the game Farmville.

Cashman,
It is - but it is really just some clever programming. There are switches you can set in your profile to prevent it from happening. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll take a look for you. I remember very little off the top of my head anymore...

Yes it is a little scary. When I first signed on this weekend I gave it minimal information. It immediately presented me with a list of four names, three of them were relatives (I have no idea who the fourth one was). Only one of my relatives has the same last name, the other two do not. I'm still trying to figure out how it linked me to them.
Then when I selected to send friend invitations to my three relatives, it presented me another list of about 16 names, which included another three relatives and a former neighbor along with about a dozen people I didn't know.

We started planning our 40th high school reunion this year on FB. It has been a fabulous resource for locating peep who have scattered.
When I first joined, I wasn't going to "friend" my teenage neices and nephews for fear that they would not be receptive to "the older generation" barging in. I was so wrong. They all friended me within less than an hour of my signing on! writer
see many of you use FB and Skype, how many of you use Twitter, how to videos on YouTube, understand the concept the younger generation call "branding" and how many of you with small businesses use social media for your business?
Here is a nice video of Mark Zuckerberg today making a new announcement, he certainly isn't as he is depicted in the movie "The Social Network", but then again I did attend a conference where Bill Gates spoke to many of us who were part of his Intel Teach to the Future program, he was less than comfortable then and appears to be more comfortable now
for those of you who were concerned about privacy they seem to be taking steps to provide more privacy and they are changing the way we communicate with each other face to face and online

There is that possibility. I have a friend who sells on ebay and she has mailed hundreds of packages with her return address and ebay shows her phone number too. Hasn't had any identity theft....yet.
In this era of internet communication, you can hardly hide. You are on some list here or there that has internet connections.
However, when I went to a sales meeting held in Porto Rico, someone at the hotel stole my credit card information and used it. In fact stole several of the attendees credit card numbers and used them.

Absolutely!!! Facebook is a great way to connect with friends and if there's something one wants to post for everyone to see...what better place to put it. Of course I've got my security tabs in place so only my "friends" can view my wall and profile etc.
I originally signed up to be in touch with the kids and grandkids...it was easy to sign up (even for one whose not too technically inclined). I have to wonder why so many folks I know are reluctant to sign up on Facebook!

Based on the fact that we are working overseas in Rome, Italy now we depend on technology to keep in touch with friends and family in the USA.
My wife uses facebook on a daily basis and enjoys keeping up with all.
We use skype weekly to watch the grandchildren grow during our absence and to just have some face to face time with friends and family.
We have a vonage phone which provides an Orlando 407 area code and works through our computer which allows friends and family to make a local call to a 407 area code and ring our phone in Rome.
The first two, facebook and Skype are free and vonage with unlimited domestic and international calling costs us less than $30 per month.

Love Facebook, check it out everyday. Social media is here to stay so better embrace it now. What about Twitter? I like it even more, one can communicate alot in 140 characters !

I love FB for the little things. Like the comments my family and friends make during and following a TV show such as American Idol. There's this little back and forth reminiscent of what might occur if we were all together on the couch watching together again.

One of my daughters invited me to play Scrabble on it - we're now on our 2nd game. You can also send little messages while playing Scrabble, kind of fun.
Also a wonderful way to see and post photos of friends/relatives.

I use FB too because so many friends and relatives are on it now. I seem to have better contact with people in FB then I do with e-mail.

Just a warning that Facebook is not a secure site. Just this last weekend I got an e-mail from Facebook telling me that someone had accessed my Facebook account from Texas. I was not in Texas nor do I know anyone who lives there. I have very tight privacy controls on Facebook so I don't know how anyone could have gotten my user name and password. I could understand it if I had spyware on my computer but Norton scans come up clean except for a few cookies. I left Facebook a year or so ago because I was worried about security. I do not have a good feeling about this web site, considering that it was this easy to get into my account?? I have enjoyed playing games there and connecting with friends and family, but right now I am not feeling it's worth it. Has anyone else had a similar, scary experience on Facebook?

Sounds fishy. I doubt the email actually was from FB, but of course I could be wrong.

I use FB everyday. Great tool for keeping in touch with friends, old and new. Even though I've never been to TV, I have many of you on my friends list which makes it convenient when I think of a question. Excited about our 1st trip to TV in Jan!!! :MOJE_whot:
:welcome:
I see you're new to TOTV. We're...tickled pink that you're here, and excited about your first trip to TV in January too. Hope to hear lots more from you here on TOTV.
All best,

Tks Pturner. Just learning my way around TOTV. It's a little overwhelming when you're not very computer savvy...but I've found this site very informing. Will try to post more often.

I do not like its security and not really interested in the minute by minute details of what my friends and family are doing. I hate all the silly little games that people get involved in and then try to get me to join in. I hate distant relatives sending me their resumes asking me for a job. Also dislike how some people feel free to be nasty or snide safe behind their keyboards and post comments that they would never say to your face. Also confused about how everyone on Facebook's kids are so smart. Seems that education has advanced to the point where there are no longer any not so smart kids anymore or perhaps their parents stay off of Facebook out of shame. Got to also love those "friends" who befriend you because they sell insurance, books, or whatever else they are trying to sell you. Also tend to find that Facebook lets people present themselves as they want to be viewed rather than how they really are in real life. Worst is all those little trite sayings everyone is fond of posting like, "the best gift a father can give to his children is to love their mother" or "the best thing a father can do for his children is to install morality", or "the best thing a father can do for his children is to teach them self reliance", ad nauseum. Heaven forbid someone comes up with an original line. :blahblahblah:
Last but not least, hate the way that Facebook further moves society to one where relationships are defined by an internet website and our "friends" are those who post on the web but are seldom, if ever, spoken to verbally or met in person. A society where popularity is defined by how many Facebook friends one has. It just bothers me when I hear people I know speak of friends only to find out that they mean people they have not seen in years or never at all but communicate with weekly on Facebook. Nonetheless I love Farmville. Only kidding, I quit Facebook awhile ago and my profession is in IT. I prefer my interpersonal relations to involve actually using my voice and eyes. For distant friends I email occassionally, speak on the phone with them every other month and when in their area, visit them. Surprisingly none of my close friends and family are on Facebook anymore, having once used it and found it to be lacking. YMMV :duck:

I reluctantly got on FB after getting several friends invitations. I don't do the "silly games" Vinny mentioned, because I don't like the fact they pull your and friends information. I agree with the other post about restricting what contact information you grant. I do like FB for contact with friends across the country as well as family. I'm not on it like TOTV, but do like staying in touch with a lot of friends.

As others have mentioned Facebook is a great way to keep in tough with famly members and friends. But.... it is also the reason I am moving to the Villages. I found a friend of mine who I hadn't been in touch with for more than ten years. Several months after reconnecting I met her in Florida for a Life Style visit and fell in love with the Villages. After three months I finally have a contract for my home in New Jersey and will be coming to the Villages to purchase my dream retirement home this Thursday!

I always check FB several times a day to catch-up with what my peeps are doing, and I love to share my photos and see theirs. FB reconnected me with a couple of lost friends and former coworkers that I often thought about.
However, I detest those "games" and applications, so have to use the "hide" mode for those friends who participate in them barf
I have real-life friends, family, former co-workers, cyber friends and a couple of TV friends :MOJE_whot:

Saying goodbye to friends and family back home, seems to be the biggest emotional negative that Village residents speak of.
I never thought that Facebook would be of interest to me. I joined and now, I speak regularly with my daughter as well as nieces and nephews that I rarely had contact with. I have also been contacted by tons of old friends and former colleagues. My sister is also a frequent Facebook friend.
I think I am closer now with my nieces and nephews than I have ever been.
Does anybody else use/enjoy facebook?
I was able to locate 2 former friends that i had lost touch with 35 years ago, I never would have found them as they both moved away.:MOJE_whot::boom::clap2:
