Did anyone else receive a recorded message by phone from the Sumter sherriff's office stating they were searching for a male suspect in the area? Also stated to lock all doors and windows. This was this afternoon.

Read on Village blog that it was a black male, wearing red shorts with dreadlocks and he is armed. Is that the description C, or am I aiding a rumor?

Same message received here. New experience, don't know why we were selected, but the tip is deeply appreciated. Got to wonder how many of us reached for our favorite weapon at that point. I do hope that we will also be notified when they have the person in custody.

Just read Wildwood PD was pursuing this person when he collided with a vehicle, killing a lady from Inverness. He fled the scene on foot.

Very curious as to how you were contacted by email and cell phone? Land line I can understand, but a cell phone number and especially email address can originate from anywhere.
Do you subscribe to some sort of security service, or provide the police previously with that information?

Interesting to note, I got the messages, and these appear to have come from RED ALERT, the phone number displayed was an 866 area code, the NEW Sumter county alert uses at 352 area code. I thought the new system was active now....
PS they caught the guy, this was related to the very bad accident at 219 and 44.

Received the message; the wife was out so I called her to make sure she received it, which she did. My weapon is always in the front pocket, my wife's is always in her purse.

That's correct, GG. That's the message we received on both cells and land line.

I seem to recall when we moved in and completed all the forms suffering from FORM EXHAUSTION, we gave our cell and e-mail information.
It is a rude awakening as to how much information is available on all of us. Look yourself up on SPOKEO.
I've not looked in a while but I deliberately provide false information and then track where it goes. SPOKEO has that I am well over 100 and have more money than BUFFET.

There are confusing reports, last night, one of the TV stations reported he was caught, this morning he was still being reported as on the run by another station......

We have 54 homes in our Village and I would guess more than half of them. MUCH more than half of them.

I don't even own a gun. Got enough of them long ago. I had a mid-Eastern man ask me the other day if I could change one thing in the USA , what would it be? NO MORE WARS!

I own a .30-30 Marlin, 12 gauge Winchester, and a .22 long Marlin. I would suspect most gun owners have more than one.

Don't sigh Bogie. We both are from Ohio and everybody had a rabbit hunter in their family. We don't own guns in our family but I must say it is comforting to know that all around me there are folks who know how to use guns.
And cameras. Oh boy do we have cameras in our neighborhood. Yep, SMILE you scoundrel.
This is a very safe place to live and I hope that doesn't change because I will learn how to shoot a gun if it does.

I used to have a bunch of them but sold most of them to get letters out to people about something else. Still have a few though. Growing up in Reno, Nevada as a teen required often going hunting to fit in with the crowd of male youth.
People would often stop and give us rides into the more rural areas even though we were all carrying rifles and shotguns on our walks out of the suburbs of Reno.

They could still be doing that in some parts of Reno, Nevada but not now where I used to live as there are now many houses and warehouses where I used to hunt. I never got much of anything though.
I remember one male teen giving a talk on traps used on game as an oral presentation in our English class and so many of the students thought the traps were extremely cruel to the animals and the girls in the class were disgusted for the most part. This would have been in 1975 or 1976.

I'm with the girls. Traps are inhumane.
