View Full Version : Opinion v Complaint

The oft refrain seen in comments on TOTV is that" some people have to complain because they can never be happy." Yet that explanation seems absolute, inadequate,non- objective and unfair?
Perhaps the misinterpretation is not so much in what is said but how the poster expressed it?
Perhaps the comments by the sending poster hit a nerve with the receiving poster?
Civil discussion requires civility, calm cognitive thinking and objective responses.
Does the "I can't define pornography but I know it when I see it" rule apply?
Since TOTV is designed as a forum to offer opinion I am wondering how other posters define the difference between opinion and complaint?

An "opinion" is a persons view of something...be it positive(I think it's nice that people save themselves a seat in the square), negative(I think it's wrong and people who save seats in the square are turds) or neutral(I don't think it really matters if people save seats in the square).
A complaint is always negative, sometimes caused by personal feelings and rarely are they constructive when posted on-line.

That would be my view.
A complaint is a negative opinion from someone who is not happy with something, but that does not mean that the person is always negative or unhappy.

I agree with this, I for one am not always good at expressing myself with the written word.
I add another as a twist on this: Perhaps the misinterpretation is not so much in what is said but how the reader interprets it?
Without body language, the same words can be taken in very different ways.

Some people don't care at all what others think.
Some people care a lot what others think.
Some people are BORN with more skill at communicating.
Some people are born with less skill at communicating and interpreting what others say. (slight touch of Autism)
Some people with kind hearts and good communication skills get annoyed at times.
Some people ALWAYS look for negative things and they find them.
Some people are taught to TRY to see the positive.
Some people have plenty of reasons to be negative but aren't and some people have plenty of reasons to be negative and ARE negative.
Sometimes people who are the most unlovable need our love most.
And sometimes they need a kick in the fanny.
You are welcome.

...Some people ALWAYS look for negative things and they find them...
Complaints and opinions, even when negative, can be perfectly valid. But these are the people that rarely lend anything constructive to a thread.

Good Morning! I might add some like to "stir the pot" (especially in the political forum) by writing words that they don't even believe themselves. It's become difficult to have an intelligent and civil political discussion and I find myself just ignoring the forumn. On the other hand, TOTV is a wonderful site for opinion, legitimate complaints and information for residents of The Villages. :clap2:

I differentiate the two as a complaint being an expression of dissatisfaction that something was not done right and needs to be corrected.
"The soup was not hot enough". (Implication that it was not heated properly.)
Whereas an opinion would be along the lines of "The soup would have been better had it been hotter. (Less an implication that something was wrong but rather one of opinion.)

I do not agree that complaints are negative.....What if a complaint is about something that is wrong? Done wrong? Doing wrong? About something that is not correct? Unsafe? Etc........
No doubt many are...and like everything else that becomes public discourse, it is usually only the negatives that take up the most space and time in discussions.

First of all, this type of forum people, YOU, seem not to be aware that much of communication-facial expression etc is not there.
You and I have locked horns and yet whether you realize it or not that quote you have selected I can't define pornography but, know it when I see it. Is one I've posted previously on this site.
If, YOU read any of these threads, you will find that it is all OPINION people think differently.
A quote from Condi Rice-If, all your friends agree with you, you need some new friends.
There is that old allegory about the blind men and their description of an elephant. It is another interesting thought.

I feel most people are composing their answers before reading the post carefully. I was recently accused of bashing Munn's's because the brasher thought I was the OP. Still waiting for that, oops, My bad.

This may be the right time to post a quote from Marcus Aurelius:
Everything we hear is an OPINION, not a FACT
and
Everything we SEE is a perspective, not the TRUTH.

I see a complaint as a "negative opinion" because the person is saying something negative about a situation.
That is not to say that they are being negative - if something is unsafe then they have a right to complain about it and are taking a positive step by so doing.

I think a problematic issue with opinions is that people often fail to recognize the distinction between opinion, assumption, and fact. The preceding is an opinion.
Complaining can be productive, but usually isn't. Also an opinion.

In my mind's eye, an opinion is from someone that has some particular expertise or knowledge on that topic. A complaint has a negative element no matter how articulate.
Actually comparing opinion vs complaint is incommensurable.
This post should not be considered criticism of the OP but just commentary.

In regards to a forum such as this...why does it really matter?
I have to admit getting a chuckle from the complete irony, from those times when someone complains about something and then is attacked...by those with different opinions. :D

I left the site almost 2 months ago due to a few telling me that my thoughts and opinions needed to be kept to myself. It's funny when I said I was out and done I received almost 50 p.m.'s asking me not to leave. Sometimes you just need to take a step back, not login to the site, and let things be.
If we all didn't have different thoughts, opinions and advice, we could make a Stepford Movie 2. I just love it when someone has an idea that, makes my life easier, makes me smile, and sometimes just bust out laughing.

so I have read and reread all the foregoing comments and now wonder how posters would define complaints that are made against a business? How about a legal complaint?
Are the aforementioned complaints negative?
And I wonder if opinions are no more than a general expression about a given topic (person place or thing)?
do some of us expression our opinions too forcefully or perhaps too absolute?
Does a topic or even a word cause one to over react?
Indeed body language and fine nuances are missing from our posts. some of us are creative wordsmith some of us are not emoji help .

It is obviously a personal choice. However like the 50 or so PMs you received most on TOTV (and any where else for that matter) do what is right and respect each others opinions.
There will always be a few antagonists who are in the minority....less than 5%......so why let them interfere with the other 95% of us?
Just use the ignore feature and "do not engage" them.

complaint..expressions of grief, pain, dissatisfaction, protest or outcry, formal allegation
opinion.. a view, judgment, appraisal, a belief stronger than impression but less than positive knowledge, formal expression of judgment by an expert
When does the old saw "depends on whose ox is being gored", apply?
When does "what was intended and what was expected come into play?
Do we confuse or inter-mix the above-stated definitions?
Is the term "bellyaching" an appropriate substitute for complaining"?
