I posted an ad in Talk of The Villages to sell a table for $75. I received an text from a person that asked for my name and address so that they could Fedx a check. When the check arrived this morning, it was made out to me for $1350.00. He texted me that his cashier mistakenly added the shipping charges and wanted me to deposit the check in my bank and mail the shipping charges via a moneygram to the shipper.
I was born at night, but not last night!
I wont mention his name, because it's probably false, but the phone number was: 323-473-9244
DO NOT Fall For This!!!

Common scam you see on many classified sites, particularly Craigslist.

So, the shipping charge was supposed to be $1275 to ship a $75 table? Who would believe that?

I can ship it for just $1200.

We got one of those a few years ago, FEDEX said that the person buys a $1.00 check and copies it with a new amount. They are in another country so nobody will do anything.

We received a voice mail that our Windows license had expired and to call right away. Last time it was the IRS and they were going to send us to jail and then there was that trip we won..... Sadly many do fall for these.

Curious. What did you do with the check? Thanks for the reminder. Cons wouldn't keep doing this if people didn't fall for it.

I got a call today from "Windows Tech Support." I gave him an obscene piece of my mind and hung up the phone. Next time, I'm tempted to keep them on the phone for awhile and hen do the same thing.

The last time a fellow with an Indian accent called and said he was from windows, I said my windows don't need cleaning and hung up.

We have a friend up north who pretended to follow the instructions and when the "tech" told him he couldn't connect our friend replied "oh, I forgot, I don't have a computer"

Hmmm, we just let the phone ring. If it's important just leave a note.

While in CO I clicked on an attachment from a former renter...big mistake. since then, my credit card has been hacked, got a new one. Changed passwords on everything I can think of. Someone, somehow, tried to hack into my patient portal account with the villages health care, after several attempts, it was locked then they tried again and got locked out. I just changed that info and password as well. I froze my credit reports with the 3 credit report companies.
My IPhone has had strange problems, my emails go to trash, had to restart my thumb print id. Bottom line do not open any attachments unless you are sure that it is legit

We've all done the same thing, don't beat yourself up. Live and learn.
I don't open any attachments unless they're from friends.
I am careful to check the sender's email address before I open the attachment.

AND if you receive mail almost daily and all if a sudden you don't, check with the USPS to make sure a change of address wasn't submitted.

First of all...yes, thanks for letting him send the check FedEx. Both of our pension checks here depend on people using them!!:1rotfl:
Secondly, that guy has been on TOTV for a while now and I believe Admin is aware. I ratted his butt out once already. He tried the same crap with me. Glad you didn't get ripped off.

Remember do not talk to them. don't let them get a tape of your voice-- if they are able to get "yes" it can be used to get over the phone applications for credit cards etc in your name,,,,,
Just hang up,
Email-- do not open attachments -- but I have to admit-- sometimes the email is so good it looks exactly like your bank or credit card-- you have to pay attention to what you read. That happened to me, something in the email concerned me and i called the bank/or card with phone number from my current credit card and they issued me a new card- just because I received the email.
Also I was told re nuisance calls, when I tried to block them, they just keep calling by changing the last 4 numbers of the number i had blocked.
Now they are calling me on my cell...
Also if anyone calls and message says press another # to speak to someone-- do not do it. It can be a problem. Too long to explain. Trust me
You have to be so careful these days.

When I get one of those "Windows" phone calls, I calmly tell them they are doing wrong and there is a special place in hell for them.
While it will not stop the evil, one person just may quit the scam calling.
And I know many of the callers probably don't believe in hell, BUT if one of them does, well it just may get them thinking.

More likely, the ex-renter's email was hacked and the same attachment sent to all of their contacts...with the hope that someone would click on it.
The same scenario occurs when all of a sudden a person receives a new friend request on Facebook, from someone who is already a friend.
It's a good idea to change your passwords every so often on email accounts/Facebook/Etc.

I agree, friends computer probably hacked.
You can usually tell if the email you just received from a friend is probably from a hacking. The subject line might be, I lost 87 pounds with… And your friend has never weighed more than 100 lbs. Or, I made $10M on this penny stock and your friend lives paycheck to paycheck. It’s not difficult to spot a “hacked” email from a friend.

When you post an ad in the classifieds we suggest you do not put any email or phone information in the body of the ad. Only in the fields we specifically ask for them in.
This means that in order for someone to get your contact info they have to be a registered user. In that case we can track them down and ban them.
If you had someone contact you this way click the contact us at the bottom of this page with the users name and we can ban them.
Best Regards,
TOTV Team
