A couple questions/comments on cabinets. We had the cabinet guy over today because some kitchen cabinets swing open too much, for example banging into the microwave. We were told that they aren't adjustable to keep them from banging. He suggested putting little rubber bumpers on the outside of the cabinets which I think would look like hell. The builder also had suggested that. Wouldn't good quality cabinets have these adjustments? After the sliding glass door guy yesterday was banging the crap out of the sliding glass door rubber seals to put them back in place I'm really questioning the quality of the stuff in our new courtyard villa.
And back to the cabinets, there are no handles or knobs on any of the new cabinets. Do most people add those on later?

So you put the bumpers on the outside of the cabinets?
And you added the knobs after your home purchase?

Count the number of knobs you need and multiply by 12.5 That's what a decent set of knobs will cost you. Easy install if you can measure accurately and use a cordless drill

Nope. Came with the house. They are nice to have but not entirely necessary.

Yes, the bumpers are in the outside. Don't notice 'em

Have the cabinet guy give you the bumpers. They look as pictured.

Yeah no problem. Dusty is coming tomorrow with my 5 new windows and a 10 lb. hammer for the gaskets. Pray for this sinner.

I can't believe you used 47 bumpers. Looks like you need to buy some more. I love those things. I stick em everywhere, even in places where they are not needed. The cabinet knobs may look nice, but they are really not necessary, and you need to be very careful about where you drill the holes or they will not line up and will look bad.

The bumpers will work just fine to protect the cabinet and microwave. Another option is to change the hinges (or have them changed) to hinges that allow adding restriction clips. They limit the opening to 86 degrees so doors won't hit microwaves or fridges that are adjacent to them. Not very costly to do yourself. Scott Thompson, Village Home Repair swapped ours out and works great.

I purchased those clear bumpers at Lowes and put them on the microwave, not the cabinet.
They also sell a small jig for drilling holes for knobs.

You have a courtyard villa. That is a home that is already built, like a spec home here. Spec homes here do NOT have uniform things in them. Some have handles or knobs on cabinets, some do not. On spec homes the appliances and the finishings are different in them. A court yard villa generally has the level of items that a designer has. A Premier has wider base moldings and often comes with crown moldings. It takes a while to learn all these things. We have owned a designer and a premier and both were fine. Warranty bends over backward to accommodate buyers, in my opinion.
Also. You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar when dealing with folks at warranty or anywhere. Just sayin'.

That's why a handyman is so popular in TV. We had Tim 'the toolman' Miller put knobs on all the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. We used hand pulls that had 2 screws, he charged $100. We bought the pulls at Lowes, about $110 total, they look like the picture below. We also had him put a peep hole in the front door, our CYV doesn't have a sidelite window. We also had him install aluminum pull down attic steps in the garage and plywood flooring in the attic, parts and labor $290. We also had him move all the shelving in the master closet up a foot and then he installed a duplicate set of shelves about a foot below the old location, filled in any holes and painted over. Essentially we doubled our master closet, parts and labor $150. We had him put a shelf over the washer and dryer for storing detergent, etc, parts and labor $40. These are 2011 prices, Tim does attic steps that are wood instead of aluminum for about $100 less but since attics can get so hot we felt it worth the upgrade. Tim also does garage floors with the fancy sprinkles and paint, but we skipped that, I think it's nice looking but somewhat dangerous whenever it's wet the floors get slick. We didn't have any of those problems with our kitchen cabinets. In fact we wanted a white kitchen and by the second year we had our kitchen refacted in white, cost $4800. Miller's Home Services 352-217-0516, be aware he is usually booked a week or two ahead.

The designer homes come with cabinet hardware, the villa's do not. I bought my kitchen cabinet knobs at Home Depot. They have a very nice selection that cost around $8-$10 each. I purchased brushed metal knobs to complement the sink faucet and I carried the same theme through to the bathrooms which matched the lights. Cabinet knobs are not necessary but, I found they really dress them up and are worth the cost. I had a handyman install mine.
TIP - Count the number you need for the doors separate from the number you need for drawers. There are drawer knobs that compliment the door knobs with a round style. Make sure you place your fingers under them to see how it feels when opening a door. Buy an extra knob in case one does not seem quite right when you open them. You can always take it back if you don't use it.

A tip about the cabinets I learned the hard way: Take care to keep the interiors dry. Even a damp dish can cause damage.
In my case, the coffeepot overflowed into a drawer. The paper veneer inside is not at all water resistant. The drawer box swelled in a flash. Luckily, DH is handy, so he built a new drawer box of wood and finished it well. You can't tell anything happened.

I'm slowly learning. Thanks everyone. I agree that the warrant people have been great. Even though I have been letting off a little steam here on the forum, my wife and I do love the villa and the friendliness of everyone we've met.

Fyi for anyone thinking of hiring Tim "the toolman", it looks like he is only specializing in epoxy garage floors and attic stairs now per the message that was left for me. Also the number is 0561. But thanks anyway. I'll look for someone else specifically for installing the kitchen/bathroom knobs and also for a peep hole in the door.

Anybody have any other recommendations for a handyman to install the knobs and the peep hole?

We have completely customized our CYV including replacing the cabinets so this is not always true.

Anybody?
Tim " the toolman" by far had the most recommendations but unfortunately he is no longer doing the knobs and peep hole.
The cabinet guy, Derek, who came by to tell us the cabinet openings cannot be adjusted does the knobs but I cannot locate any reviews on the forum. I guess this is not a difficult job to do and he would probably be fine.

Bruce, sorry Tim didn't work out. In August somebody posted the same question and here are some responses that were rated by Villagers as good.
Dave Wilt of DMW home services 352-470-7917

Just type in a search question at the button at the top of the site and you'll answers to a lot of questions. I did that for 6 months before I moved here and had a pad full of people from painters to landscapers, handyman, plantation shutters, furniture stores, etc. That's how I found Tim and he was working for me the week we moved in.

Thanks John. I have been doing my searches but I just haven't found anyone with the number of positive posts as Tim. I will try the ones you've noted though.

If you are going to install the knobs yourself try using Laurey 98201 Perfect Mount Precision Alignment Template for Cabinet Hardware. This item is from Amazon. Just be certain to be laser focused on the project, no distractions. It is an easy job as long as you measure twice and drill once. Lowes & Home Depot has a great selection of knobs and handles.

I usually measure once and drill twice. Not a good combination. I'll hire someone.

I put peel and stick tiles in cabinets that could use them. Eg. Taking glasses out of dw may still drip a wee bit, under sinks - just in case and so on. They are easier to wipe clean too.

I think the Designer series homes come with knobs and pulls but the courtyard and villas do not. Just a guess from looking at the pictures of the new homes for sale on TV website. I have a designer home that came with them but put pulls and knobs on my house in Las Vegas. If you are going to do them yourself, a few helpful hints: put blue painters tape on both sides where you drill to prevent chipping, use a fresh battery and new drill bit on your drill, and buy a jig/installation guide to have even holes. As for the bumpers, can you put them on the microwave instead of the cabinet? Might be less noticeable that way.
