This is mainly targeted at "Full-timer Couples" in TV as well as those in other 55+ communities.

Now that we are retired, we put fewer miles on our cars each year.

My question:

When you relocated to FL, and began using a Golf Cart for some amount of transportation in the community, did you decide to downsize the number of cars to 1 vehicle?

YES! We have one car, the golf cart, and a 50CC scooter that my hubs uses to get around to his activities, unless it's raining, in which case we fight over the cart. :) Some weeks the car barely gets used.

We have one car but we do not use our golf cart as a second vehicle. I'll use it for golf and twice a week to make a quick stop at the store which also occasionally includes filling the tank

One car and one cart ............. and I hate having one car. It seems that whenever I want the car it is not available. To the wife, do not get rid of your car, you will want it. Suggest you keep both cars and get a cart and see who uses what and then make changes.

Why do you want to know?

I am just doing some homework and pondering future decisions. Trying to figure out what might "strike the right balance".

My question could have two implications; The type of home (i.e., garage space) along with the amount and type of "Rolling Stock" we might maintain.

This subject came up briefly once when we moved here. There was a suggestion that we could get by with one car. No Way, Jose!

Good Question to ask..................Just ignore the negative posters on this forum.

Right now, we have two carts, two cars (one convertible) and one Harley. That being said, you should consider your toys and storage. We will be eliminating a car, but I don't think I will regret the extra space.

Keep asking questions.

Reluctantly went down to one car and one golf cart. However, it has worked out well for us. There are few times when we both need the car or cart at the same time but work it out. Saves on insurance, depreciation and parking.

It sounds like it might be possible to get a larger garages (or extend the garage) on certain home models if one builds a new home.

Is that only possible on certain homes? For example can a CYV have a 2 car + 1 cart Garage?

We just went from 2 cars and a cart to one car and a cart. Although I had panic attacks at the begnning, it has been most successful. Should have done it sooner.

Search the homes listed on the Villages site and select garage size. It is listed under More. It will give you great info on what models have the 2+1.

One Car and One Cart. Car gas bill was about $250 a month in NJ. In TV'S Car bill about $20, Golf Cart about $15. We always had a Mini Cooper as a second car, it may be our primary vehicle soon.

Listen to me carefully. You are missin' a lotta fun.

When Helene and I get in our little Ohio State decorated golf cart and whiz over to Laurel Manor to paint we love the wind blowing in our faces and the pretty trees and golf course views and we love parking our cart right next to one decorated for Michigan. I love red and gray so much better than blue and yellow.

I enjoy riding home trying to beat the rain and sometimes losing. I love the folks we pass who smile and wave and those who don't.

Henry loves to drive his more traditional two seater to the golf courses five days a week trying to nail his seventh hole in one.

BUT if we were all the same, they would only sell vanilla ice cream.:spoken:

Making the garage larger depends on the size of the lot you have, whether you add to the side or add depth. Also, I have seen some court yard villas where the owners have added a cart garage. This only seems possible on corner lots where there is extra space.

Along those lines, despite the risk:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:, I'll ask everyone their opinion. I have one full size SUV (Buick Enclave) and one convertible, as well as a golf cart. Unfortunately my wife passed 5 days ago. The SUV is great for moving stuff and long distance drives to family in NC. The convertible is fun around here. How many would keep the SUV, how many would keep the convertible, and how many would keep both? Assume cost is not an issue. Thanks

First, condolences on your loss. I would wait awhile before deciding which to keep. If you don't have a need for the extra storage space an SUV provides, that might be the direction to go in as far as downsizing. Be well.

Unfortunately my wife passed 5 days ago.

Sorry for your loss.

Ditched our second car when we moved here. Than once we got here we traded our car for a crossover SUV. After two years we realized we just weren't going to be "hauling" stuff as much as we did before we moved here and traded the SUV for a sedan.

20-20 hindsight told us we should have just kept the car we moved down here with.

My guess is that you didn't move here so you could move a lot of stuff so keep the convertible...

Yes, one small car and only use it when we tutor in Lady Lake and the Boys and Girls club teaching etc.
Otherwise, never use it. Take the bus to Airport and fly or bus to the Cape for Cruises.
Have one golf cart, electric, love it. Two bicycles for most everything. Got a small car for the small garage over a year ago, it has about 400 miles on it.
Consider this: To burn one pint of gas, about one pound (and 8 of those to a gallon), it takes 14 pounds of air for combustion, so you get 15 pounds of junk out the exhaust, think about it. Hold your breath in the tunnels?
Have fun folks.

We sold our northern cars and bought southern cars. Dark grey Subaru Outback for Pearl white Mazda 3, Black Ford F-150 for Bright blue Tacoma, kept the Vette & bought a 4 seater Yamaha.
Unless you lost your drivers license I see no reason to use a golf cart instead of a car 95% of the time.

I badly miss my basement.

Our home has a two car garage and a golf cart garage.
You put in your tools, gardening stuff etc and it is suddenly tight for a medium sized car and a two seat golf cert.

If, you plan on buying one of the four seat golf carts where all the seats face forward they are almost as large as a car-bigger then some cars.

If, you,"plan," on mowing your own lawn you need room in your garage for the mower.

Yep, when my refrigerator when out rented truck cause didn't want wait for delivery days later. I my trade my car in for small 4 door pickup, I like the new Colorado's and they are only 20 inches longer than my car which should JUST fit in my garage, can't stand leaving my vehicle outside.

We have a car and a golf cart, and we probably use both
about the same amount! They each do certain tasks better.
Someone mentioned missing a basement, but I sure don't.
Can you imagine having a basement during a storm that
dumps many inches of rain in a short period?
Personally I consider it a plus, not have a lot of storage space,
since it makes me really think hard about aquiring things.
And I'm finding it more relaxing to travel a lot lighter in life!:MOJE_whot:

Had two cars, sedan and SUV, and two carts (have a 3 car garage). Sold the sedan then traded the SUV on a van. Now can use as a truck or put 8 people inside (cozy) when the need arises. Only use the car if leaving TV or inclement weather. Now having said that, I think it is important that you keep what you have for awhile and see what your lifestyle becomes when you are here. You could be like Chat and have a fear of driving a cart down here or like us and embrace the use of a cart.....you won't know that until you live it. Don't jump either way.

Waverunner
09-01-2017, 03:20 PM
We came with two cars. We bought a gas cart with a jump seat (4 seater) about six months in. We sold the sedan and kept the SUV. Hubby plays golf. I don't....yet. (Getting intense neighborhood pressure.) When we discussed getting rid of my car, I was hesitant, and we reviewed the use and savings and it just made sense. The one smart thing we did at the time we sold my car was to sync up our electronic calendars, especially noting appointments where the car was needed.

We have an over sized two car plus golf cart garage. If/when we get a second cart, we have the ability to park them tandem. We love having the extra space in the garage regardless and we recommend getting the largest garage available. It costs more to move or to add on!!!

It has been a couple of years since we sold my car and we have yet to have to rent the extra car.

Gotta agree with this. Maybe I'll regret it come winter (we've only been here since February) but I'm disappointed if we "have" to take the car for anything inside The Villages. So far, neither of us have needed to leave The Villages without the other, so we've never missed having the second car. We don't miss the insurance on the second car, either. And we like the extra space having a 2 1/2 car garage with only a car and a cart.

Sorry to hear your wife passed so recently.

We sold our golf cart as the paths near us went on the road and our hair stood on end a few times. We had an 12-year ok Honda SUV. Hubby came home with a new car for me as a present...the one he always wanted : ). We use the SUV constantly and even today wished we had taken it to Home Depot. We have moved, so when the SUV won't run anymore, we may get a gas cart......or not.

Doesn't Home Depot rent their trucks by the hour or something like that? I think I would rent than own a truck. Actually, never did own a truck but I did own an SUV when I lived in NJ.

Hubby and I were seasonal in TV for several years. We did not own a golf cart and only had one car for the three months per year we were in TV. That worked very well for us so we knew when we became full time here in TV that one car would be just fine for us.

We are full time now in TV and have one car and one golf cart. It has worked so well for us. When the golf cart goes in for service, Gordon's gives us a loaner. Lexus will give us a loaner car if we need to leave the car over night for service. Other than that, I can't think of a reason why we would need two cars. Now that I've said that in writing, I'm sure the time will arise.

When we moved here full time, we had two SUVs and a golf cart. We sold off one SUV as we quickly determined that one SUV was sufficient for our purposes along with the golf cart. When you consider the extra cost of insurance and upkeep on an annual basis, for those few times that we might need a second vehicle, it would be far cheaper to rent a car.

Note: Our golf cart is a 2-seater. We determined that the extra cost and rougher ride of a 4-seater wasn't worth it to us. We would have to rent quite a few golf carts before we reached the cost differential between the 2-seater and 4-seater.

Don't do anything yet. Keep both cars for now. They say after losing a spouse, you should not make big changes for a couple of years.

At end of a year, at least, you'll probably know if keeping both cars is working out. I personally would like having the option both cars would afford.

There are guys who own trucks and there are truck guys, I'm the latter. Owning a truck not only gives me mobility but also self sufficiency for any task I may want to do. Hauling, towing, off roading etc. and pickup trucks have the highest residual value of any vehicle out there. Why ? Because they are so useful and never go out of style.
Full disclosure, I'm not your typical Villager. I do for myself and never hire anyone, for anything. Never have, never will.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I agree with others, assuming cost is not an issue, wait. Your heart will tell you what to do.

Along those lines, despite the risk:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:, I'll ask everyone their opinion. I have one full size SUV (Buick Enclave) and one convertible, as well as a golf cart. Sorry for your deep loss. I would wait 6 months or so. You'll know what to do then. Take care.

Consider your needs and individual schedules before you decide. We have two cars and a golf cart and mostly use the cars due to our individual needs. Keep the two cars for a while and see how your life routine evolves before deciding. Also...

Do you like to ride in a golf cart in the rain or when its cold? Or when it is really hot?
Will you be traveling longer distances (more than 3- 5 miles) in TV on a regular basis
Will you be traveling outside TV a lot?
Are you always in a hurry or late to get to your destination?
Car insurance is relatively cheap here but are costs an issue?

We had a car (his) and a pickup (mine). Was handy in Massachusetts, but no room for it here. Now one car and one cart. I love the cart and put 100 miles a month on it.

If you choose to get a cart, get insurance SEPARATE from home insurance.

We have a Buick Enclave (doesn't everyone when you go to the parking lot) one convertible, and two golf carts. Convertible fun to drive, HOT with the top down in the summer. Buick is for out of the bubble. Two golf carts a must, but that us.

One car (crossover) and two golf carts. I personally would wait and see what would work out with your lifestyle. We had 2 cars when we moved here, but found that we were pretty much together anytime that a car was necessary, so having a second was not beneficial.

Golfing eagles, so sorry for your loss.

Do you take your dogs in your golf cart, and if you do, how do you attach their harnesses?

Bare: Our dogs love riding in the golf cart. We bought an attachment which snaps into the seat belt receiver and run it through a loop that came with one of their harnesses. We then clip the harnesses to the loop. Keep in mind that they are smaller dogs, so they sit next to each other on the passenger seat when I am driving alone with them.

We came with one SUV and one convertible (sold the Corvette before we came...). Now we still have the SUV and two golf carts, one electric set up for golf, one gas set up for long haul rides. We often use both carts. Somehow, even a routine Walmart run is more fun in a cart.

We went from 3 cars (one toy) and a motorcycle to one car, one cart and two bicycles. Haven't had a problem yet (1.5 years).
