I did not know it was International Bacon Day. I had never heard of International Bacon Day.......

BUT! I had already planned to make German potato salad today.

What is so weird about that is I rarely make German potato salad because it involves making a mess, frying bacon and peeling potatoes, and then I have to keep tasting it until I get the vinegar/sugar ratio just right. And, besides all that, you can't get svelte on German potato salad.....Zaftig--Yes. Svelte--No.

BUT! I have been planning today's cookery all week. I already have my ingredients at the ready. I rarely buy bacon, but I even made a pilgrimage to Trader Joe's for their uncured bacon because I recently read it's really good. (I had to look up what it meant to call bacon "uncured." I did not know that until this past week.)

I told Mr. Boomer that I had no idea why the sudden urge to make German potato salad on Saturday. I have not made German potato salad for two years. Why now?

And now I know.....This whole time......International Bacon Day has been calling to me.........(Cue theme from "The Twilight Zone.")

PS: I am north right now, but when in TV, we go to Rae Rae's when we need a bacon fix. Best bacon around. I have complimented the owner on his bacon.

PPS: And while on the subject of bacon, I just have to tell you (if you are still reading this dissertation) that when we were in SC for the eclipse totality, we went to a little restaurant where I had a Southern BLT: Bacon, lettuce, a fried green tomato, and homemade pimento cheese, all melty. It was exquisite.

And now I must shut up and go get started on my bacon frying.......

I have to avoid bacon, too much chloresterol. The best or actually only good place to get lump crab meat is at Sam's Club. They had a coupon in the recent coupon mailer, $20 credit card when you join. We had let our membership lapse, so we rejoined this week and basically got the crab meat for free. My wife made the crab cakes last night and we'll have them twice today since a pound will make 8 crab cakes about this size. Everybody from Maryland will know what I'm talking about.

You should try Morning Star veggie bacon. No chloresterol

I am so sorry Ruthie. You weren't here and I had to say it. Miss you every day.

I have a bacon canister on my stove, that was my granny's. has a strainer in it. I use a dab of bacon grease when I cook, but that's the south in me.

I remember my grandfather making German potato salad when I was about ten years old. LOVED it. His version was LOADED with onions, which I still love.

Do you have a recipe for those crab cakes?:bigbow:

Start with lump crab meat, a pound container which Sam's Club usually sells in the middle back of the store in a reach down cooler. Buy 'Old Bay Crab Cake Classic Mix' in the yellow packet sold at Walmart and other grocery stores. Without going into details, just follow the instructions on the back of the packet. You'll need mayonaise and add one slice of broken up white bread without the crust, that's not in the instructions. We normally get 8 cakes out of a pound of meat. Bake in the oven at 380 for 15 minutes, and then broil for 2 minutes. You can turn them, but normally we don't because they can fall apart. We don't eat with tartar sauce, just the way they are or sprinkle on Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce if you like.

Thank you. I will try this, too.

Is the 380 a typo? Should it be 350? (I promise I am not channeling my mean, grouchy typing teacher. I honestly am not sure about what temperature you meant........I never could get past 32 wpm.....The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.....The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.....The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog........ :( )

It's 380, that's correct. On the back of the Old Bay it has 375 for some other recipe, but go with 380.
