For those of us that are not there but own houses can you please post "factual" conditions of what is happening/observations in The Villages as this event unfolds. We can easily follow CNN and the like but would like to get a first hand perspective of reality in The Villages from our neighbors. Much appreciated. If of any help we had our house get flooded with 35000 gallons of water last year when we were not there. A story for another time. Yes we were devastated. But in hindsight the damage has been repaired and the house as good as or better than it was before the incident. It was stressful but it was only stuff and stuff did get fixed. Please be safe.

RustyP: I can tell you what it is like on Glenview.

Periodic heavy wind and torrential rain, then everything gets very quiet and calm, and then repeat wind and rain. We are all under a tornado WATCH. We have a deep ditch running behind our home on the golf course and that is about half filled with water. We actually have three ducks in it right now.

Bear in mind, the worst of the storm will not come through TV until about midnight tonight. But, I did just see that the storm is now predicted to be a Cat 1 in our area and winds approx. 45mph.

Really, much like a really really bad Northeaster.

UPDATE: Just had an update from Channel 6. Hurricane force winds 95 to 110mph. 13" rain. It is changing constantly.

The tornado watch is for northeast Lake County, not The Villages.
We are having heavy bands of rain and they are now getting more frequent. Lots of tornado warnings on east coast and the most recent were near Sanford and Orlando. The tornado watches seem to be heading northwest. Hope they don't come here. Suppose to be a cat 1 when it reaches us but who knows.

Ditto in St. James. The pond alongside Southern Star #4 is starting to get seriously high. I can even see the top of the pond alongside #3 and I've never seen that from my home.

Having to deal with it in the dark, especially with any potential tornadoes...is the suckiest part. :rant-rave:

Sorry to inform you but the historic section of The Villages is in the town of Lady Lake, Lake County. Albeit on the edge,

Currently we are experiencing some gusting, not anything serious and intermittent heavy rain. I see on radar that a particularly heavy rain area is on the way, next 30 min or so.

Heavy winds, probably gusting between 20-30 mph. Constant rain but only torrential intermittently. So far, yucky but bearable. Tornadoes the biggest concern.

I've been on about 4 Villages weather stations and none have reliable wind speed, either defective equipment or blocked by buildings. I did find one in The Village of Polo Ridge and they have current wind at 25 to 35 with gusts to 42.

While it is still working
https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KFLTHEVI13#history

will give you ongoing measures of wind speed and direction, rain rate and total, as well as temp, humidity, barometric pressure.

So far 5.2 inches of rain, peak gust in low 30's, barometric pressure going down I think the wind speed is more than what is being recorded by this station.

I have discovered one thing going to get rid of Direct TV. It's off more that it's on.

Believe it or not, I have not lost Directv at all today with the exception of one channel, Channel 6 and I've got five more reporting the same stuff. While most were watching the Jaguars beat down the Texans I had my choice of 7 other games. I was able to watch the Ravens and Bengals in HD today and what a great game, 20 to 0. Andy Dalton playing at home had 4 interceptions and a fumble lost, Ravens defense is looking really good. The most we've had to do is switch to SD definition at times, even tonight we've had HD at times. I'll take that anytime for the choice in programing we have.

I suspect that you would be wet by now if you lost your roof. I have a large roofing shingle laying on my grilling patio---no idea if it is mine or a neighbors. Something hit both the left and right side of my house, but I'll pass on checking it out until things settle down. Anyone know an honest, reliable roofer?

10pm update Sunday: It rained most of the day today (Sunday) and from time to time we had some pretty good wind gusts. The harder rain and wind started about 9:00pm. According to the weather channel we are seeing gusts up to 45 mph right now. The hardest wind and rain (possible up to 90 mph) will be happening about 1am Monday morning and hard winds will last till about 4am. Irma has lost its well defined eye and wind possibilities have diminished substantially over the last couple hours. The storm has also turned due north and is set to basically come right over The Villages in a couple hours. It may be a long sleepless night for many (me) who have a hard time sleeping with rain pounding on the windows. Tornado warnings associated with this hurricane have been going off all night. Praying we don't have any of those here. While Irma is a very large storm it appears we are weathering it pretty well thus far but the worst is yet to come in a few hours.

It seems that things are settling down. As much as the networks try to prop it up, I feel like we are OK <knock on wood>.

What I realize as I prepare for bed; it is 9/11. A day that will be with me and many others forever. I lost a friend that day. The spooky thing was I had a voice mail from him asking me something unrelated to 9/11 before he knew there was danger.

It took me quite a while to delete that message. The memory of that day lives forever with me and I feel so bad for the folks that lost so much...

be safe in the hurricane...

Channel 6 is reporting passage through TV between 1:30 to 2:30 and the eye is about 30 miles or so wide and eye wall wind speed still at about 95. I'm looking at Intellicast Radar right now, and the eye is crossing I-4 at Lakeland, which is due south of TV. At this moment the worse is the area between Lakeland, Kissimmee and Clermont.

Haven't gone outside but all of the neighbors siding and roofs look good. Wind gusts last night 75+ mph. Scary bumps in the night and howling winds and rain. Winds last night were northern, this morning, they're southern. Strange but I understand why the winds changed direction. This morning wind gusts 20-40 mph. We got really lucky here! 13.6" of rain. The pond on the Prairie is very full. We did lose shingles, think they're from the garage. No water intrusion.

Some recently planted palm trees up the street were uprooted and fell down. One of these across the street. There is about a six feet wide and three feet clump of dirt jutting out of the ground where one of the palm trees fell over. A house sign hangs by one hook and is continuously banging on the light post in the winds. I tried to get it off but to no avail. Neighbors must be sleeping in.

Dunedin. Never lost power, no flooding. Some houses in my immediate area have lost a few shingles. As the wind is still gusting to 45+ mph, I haven't gone out to look any further. We got at least 10 inches of rain (the limit of my rain gauge) between yesterday and last night. Wind is supposed to slowly die down over the next several hours.

So glad to hear that although there was some damage to roofs, trees and vegetation in The Villages, there was no loss of life. I know itโ€™s been said before, but roofs, birdcages, trees and bushes can be replaced; people canโ€™t be replaced.

The spirit of neighbors helping neighbors in The Villages is why living in The Villages is such positive thing. I hope all of you in TV are soon able to return to enjoying what makes living in TV such a pleasure. . . golfing, dancing, pickleball, classes, clubs, going to the Squares, using the pools and rec centers and enjoying the beauty of The Villages.

Have a safe and peaceful rest of the week!

Yep, one opened on the golf course right behind Moyer Rec Center which is now blocked off from access.

Sounds like a bowling alley. Took a quick peek in the attic to see if my roof was gone. Maybe just noisy winds. Still have power. Really worried about the damage to come overnight when the eye wall hits us.

Many of us were afraid. So very grateful no one was hurt.

Take a look at the pile of tree in Laurel Manor parking lot. TONS of ancient tree with several feet diameter and no one was harmed. I feared the worst and am so grateful you Soxman and all of us weren't harmed physically.

People go to bed during a hurricane?

Just reading through this thread again. Old news, I know, but.....

To answer your question....My husband and I went to bed at 10 and I fell asleep right away. I woke up at 6 the following morning. Missed the worst part of the storm, from what I have heard.
