Junk food dining preferences

OK, here we go. Recently transplanted, looking for certain junk food dining preferences. Looking for suggestions on where to find the following:

Pizza-thin delicious crust, generous sauce, cheese and pepperoni. The crust and sauce are the two most important things.

Wings. You can call them Buffalo wings, where we come from, they're just wings. I like hotter, my wife like Honey BBQ. Usually served with sides of ranch dressing and celery.

Philly cheese steaks. OK, now you know where I'm from. Lots of people call them by that name, most don't even come close. Any recommendations? They don't seem to be able to get the really good Amoroso rolls down here.

Hoagies- again, that's what we called them, not subs or grinders. Any good ones around here? I heard Wawa is coming, that will help.

For a Philly Cheese steak try Daryl's Diner. Just tell them to hold the green peppers. The rolls are pretty good. I like mine with sautéed onions. I do not think they have " Whiz "but I prefer mine with provolone anyway. You can buy Taylors Pork Roll and Habbersetts Scrapple at Publix. If you custom guide the deli person at Publix through the hoagie making process they will also turn out a decent sandwich. You might have to take it home and add a good tomato though. Also, if you are into Hot Cherry Peppers the only place you can buy them here is at Fresh Market. For some reason Sweet Cherry Peppers can be had everywhere. Not so with Hot.

Jersey Mike cheesesteak is awesome as are their subs. They are the nearest thing I remember getting at a hoagie shop in Ardmore way back when in nigh school. As a matter of fact I remember going to the original place down the shore! Jersey's is in Target shopping center across the parking lot. They have leased a spot in the new Trailwinds Village, opening tbd.
Flippers Pizza in Spanish Springs( they now have one down near Brownwood), you have to specially ask for the thin crust.
Can't help with wings.

The wings at Beef O' Bradys are pretty good and you can get them at a wide variety of hot spice levels. Or not spicy at all.

There are a number of these in the Villages or near the Villages. Beef 'O' Brady's Family Sports Restaurant - a team, parent and kid friendly restaurant for the whole family (https://www.beefobradys.com/)

We must go there every other week.

Wings at World of Beer, are pretty good but expensive, 5 for $7 although they'll probably give you 6, they're at Brownwood and now they have a new SS location. At Gators Dockside, I prefer the Brownwood location, they have a wings lunch special for $10.99 get 10 wings, fries, blu cheese and drink + celery add 75cents. Sonny's BBQ has good wings as well, they're at LSL. Three places to chose from that are good. Also if you're at World of Beer, on Mondays they have really good $5 hamburger.

Jersey Mike's Subs I discovered them during grand opening I think in 2014. Steak sub with grilled onions and peppers is very good and they bake their own bread rolls every morning before they open. Hoagies, cold cut subs are excellent as well, get it Mike's Way, that makes it easier and they have about a dozen choices. If you like greasy steak subs go to Beef O'Bradys, I'm not a fan. Johnny Rockets at LSL has a steak sub which is good in a pinch, but don't go out of your way. Actually I'm not a fan of the cheese whizz used in Philly, for the best steak sub go to Box Hill Pizza in Abingdon, MD exit 77B off I-95, also home to Maryland's best Crab Cakes.

Pizza, there is a current thread going on about who has the best, and if 50 people posted, there would be 25 different answers. Just do a search if you don't see it. I like the "MyPie", that's about a 9" pizza with drink for $6.99 at lunch at Flippers new location at Transverse Shopping Center at Brownwood. That's by the new Publix and Flipper's is on the end.

We have found a palatable tomato, I am not calling it a GOOD tomato, but it is a lot better than many. It's the Campari sold in plastic boxes at both Publix and Fresh Market, but we like Publix best. Only downside is that they are the small size, not the cherry, but the medium sized tomato. They are really worth trying. $4.99 for a 1lb box. I grew the Beefsteaks in NH and they were to die for, but I have not found a good Beefsteak here, they have that awful white thick core, must be the soil.

On the other hand it does not snow here, so snow versus tomato - um ................ no brainer:smiley:.

But, we do miss a good Philly Steak ........... yes, we called them Philly Steaks in NH! I make my own here, Publix will thin slice the steak for you. Pretty good, but not the same as one made at the sandwich shop in Tamworth, NH.

Have had on and off success with the heirlooms and beefsteaks at Publix. You have to catch them on the right day. Also remember ' Tomato Season "down here is the opposite of up north. Start looking in the farmers market in a couple of months.

So on my first attempt, I sliced open ten of the 40 (?) pound bags of Miracle Gro Moisture Control potting soil. I planted ten plants seven varieties in the bags, puncturing the bottom for drrainage. They grew like crazy to five or six feet tall. And yielded a grand total of three tomatoes. Maybe insufficient pollination. And the three weren't that great. Go figure...

And I did a similar thing ..... made a garden entirely from black cow, grew huge tomato plants from heirloom seeds and when I got tomatoes the birds pecked each and every one before we could get there ..... Now, I just grow native flowering plants.

Pizza? Doesn't exist. Nearest is Big Bob's in Oklawaha but still just OK. Thin crust, good toppings, cooked well, but leaves something to be desired.

Wings none like Buffalo. Best I found is O'Shucks in Wildwood.

Philly Cheese steak. Jersy Mike's is probably close, but not like a really good one from Philly.

Publix can make a good hoagie, but you do need to get involved in the process.

We bought a tomato container growing system from a garden store in Leesburg (the old town). It came with soil and fertilizer and a "shower cap" to cover the soil. Also, we bought a stand for the container so we wouldn't break our backs. The container was self-watering and held a lot of water.

I think we planted it in the late fall, with two plants (they were called Betsy or something like that--recommended by the garden store).
We got a ton of medium-sized tomatoes all winter long. They weren't PA tomatoes, but they were better than any we got at the farmers market.

I found that we experienced less waste due to spoilage with the medium size.

Currently my wife and I are considered "snowflakes" as we never know when we're going to drop into The Villages. We settled on our home Sept. 7th, just a few days before the hurricane. I was able to see first hand how well Village homes are built. Amorosa rolls! Tells me you may be from South Philly, we were born and raised there. Thus I can say you'll be very happy with almost any restaurant in TV. As international travelers we've been delighted with all our dining experiences during our brief visits to TV; Darrell's for breakfast, Red Sauce for "eggplant rollatini" appetizers, Fiesta Grande Grill for Mexican, Ricciardi's for Italian. BTW I believe I saw Tastykakes in Winn Dixie. Haven't seen any Frank's soda nor have I seen any postings about the Mummers!

You know what I had forgotten about that is probably an artery clogger but I would risk it if it was here. Jack In The Box. I had two small tacos when we were in Vegas and wasn't ready for how good it was. It tasted like Alpo when they had the chain of them in NJ when I was younger. I gave up the Sub Sangwich, Pizza struggle here. Better to accept what we have than cry :cryin2: about it.

Best Pizza I have had here has been Little Joeys Italian restaurant in Summerfield just outside of TV and Flippers pizza.
Best wings I have had here is Cody's roadhouse. Sit at the high top tables in the outside seating area and the bar menu is fantastic. Wings are .80 each and Big, juicy wings made the way you want them.
Someone told me that Derrell's Diner in Pinellas had great philly cheesesteaks. I have not personally tried them.
For Hoagies, Subs, Heroes - Jersey Mikes has the best around. Puts Subway to shame!

So far these Campari's that we purchased at Publix's are the best I have found in this area.

Don't know exactly what you meant by 'biker hangout', but our cardiologist is a biker and top-notch cardiologist. Probably isn't a 'wings' guy, though. ;)

Never eaten there, but might want to try (just don't tell our doc).

Anyhow Legends Cafe in Fruitland Park has some of the best "junk food" around.

No Frank's, no Mummers, no Amoroso's rolls, no tomato pie, and yesterday, just to put the nail in the coffin, I had to suffer through the Bears vs Tampa instead of getting the Eagles vs Kansas City. Ugh. At least Wawa is finally arriving and they do have a golf cart drill team. I guess that could kind of be like the mummers on wheels.

Madelaine Amee: OMG! The tomatoes are fabulous--and I do not use the F-word lightly!! I simply cannot believe how sweet and juicy they are. I ate a small one. I bit a small piece off the bottom (so I could dip it in Kosher salt) and the top burst and squirted all over the place. So I tried another and bit a piece off the top (hey, I wasn't born yesterday) and popped the whole thing in my mouth. Unbelievable. YOU are now my BFF. Thank you! I drove a Kawasaki many years ago when I lived in St. Petersburg. Notice the bikes are Spyders, this place looks good, your cardiologist would probably go here.

You need to get use to it, the Bucs and Jaguars are the home teams for this area. However, NFL Sunday Ticket is available on Directv and in the past new subscripters were given the ticket for free the first year. I had Directv since I moved here in 2011 and watched my Ravens beat the Browns yesterday. I've never missed a Ravens games since they started in 1996. Directv even has free installation. My neighbor is a Eagles fan, so I give him my password and he can watch his team on his computer at this house.

There was a very funny book called "The $64,000 Tomato" about a guy trying to grow decent tomatoes in his back yard, spending a fortune and still not getting a satisfactory tomato

Had a thin crust pepperoni pizza. Not bad at all. Could have used a little more sauce, maybe I'll order extra sauce next time.

I had to feel bad for the poor waitress, there was a table of 8 women behind us, they all asked for separate checks. Seriously ladies? Can't you just divide it by 8?

Definitely plan on checking out some of the other places mentioned though.

I think NYPD Pizza on 466 is the best thin crust pizza in the area!

I have been at tables with 12 and all had separate checks. Experienced waitstaff take it all in stride and don't appear to have any issues.

We all have calculators on our phones. Take the bill, add in a nice 20% tip and divide by the number of people at the table. Done. You're eating lunch in a beautiful place with a bunch of friends, are you really going to sweat a couple of bucks for lunch?

The norm in The Villages is individual checks and waitstaff are certainly used to this. The folks I hang with are anything but cheapskates and tip very well. Please limit your comments to things that you have first hand knowledge of.

It has been the norm every place we've lived since the late 1980s. I remember restaurants in NJ refusing to write separate checks when we lived there from '84-'87. But that practice is long gone.

Hi and welcome. At the Winn Dixie store in Sumter Landing the Breaded Wings, the sub sandwiches made to order and most all the Deli is really great. Grab it and walk or drive to the picnic benches at the Landing. We do it before the noise (music) starts at about 5pm. And on the breaded wings, call first, they do not have them every day. The Cod pieces are good too. Those Deli ladies are real helpful and neat and tidy.
