Doing platelets pushes when I can donate whole blood quite a ways into the next month often. And I do not know of any of these drives that allow donating platelets as these often take 3 hours from coming in to leaving. I can usually register, interview and donate whole blood on a bus or at a Recreational Facility in about 20 minutes, if that.

I have done a double red blood cell donation once on a bus. I will check with the OneBlood web-site to see if I can sign up for platelets.

Need to lower iron level so I will be donating whole blood next but cannot do that until January 8, 2018.

I just noticed there is an August 8, 2018- 08-08-2018 this coming year.

I hope people turn out for the Loud Boys Blood Drive on Saturday, November 18, 2017.

What is your iron level? Last week mine was 15.9, just wondering how high it can get. I forgot. I have cut out all beef and green vegetables until it comes back down.

I donated platelets yesterday and my iron level was now 13.4. After the last donation I looked at my diet to find all of the high iron foods I eat and found out that the Cheerios I was eating for breakfast every morning was the culprit. I cut the Cheerios and it really dropped my iron. Most cereals have too much iron in them. There are a few with 10% iron levels. I switched to unsweetened mini shredded wheat. As I understand it, Seniors do not need added iron. Our 65 Plus vitamins don't have iron.

I spent about 1/2 hour on the phone with a Rep from Cheerios asking for a reason for this but all she had were deaf ears.

Mine was also 15.9. My older brother's runs around 17 but he has hemochromatosis and needs to donate blood every month to get it down. He stops with the donations when it gets to 14.5.

My iron level when I was doing more blood donations was once in a while too low to even donate at One Blood with a 12.4 level. One Blood requires a 12.5 iron level.

My highest was 16.4 and Blanca had recommended that I donate blood the next time to get it down. Doing platelets as you know makes the iron count rise.

Hemachromatosis is a hereditary disease where iron pools in the vital organs. Can be deadly.
