If it's a 2009 as you say It should be under a Manufacturers Warrantee. Why not just contact a Yamaha Dealer?

Had the same problem with our 2009 Yamaha. I take it you had the high speed gear put in? If you did it is probably like mine they forgot or didn't make the adjustment they need to. I forget what the adjust was to either the choke or govenor. If you call the The Villages shop they will tell you. They put a mark on the gas tank after they make the adjustment.

You need to adjust the gas-air mixture. It is running too rich. You will notice the backfire when going down-hill when you let up on the gas peddle. This will not cause any imminent problem to the cart

Our older one did that - throttle cable going. Cost $79 to fix.

When the governor as been adjusted for higher speeds it may effect the linkage to the carb. When you foot is off the pedal the carb should be shut, if not, gas is pouring into the exhaust and when you accelerate again it explodes. It is a simple adjustment.

I had the same problem and it was solved by replacing the exhaust (muffler/gasket) system. Easy to replace myself but the parts did cost about $200.

A backfire is very easy to fix and 99% of the time needs no parts. Simple adjustment of the cables, or if someone has been messing with the carburetor, then it too will need adjustment. Making sure the carburetor is fully closed is the key.

Bought a 2010 Yammi from The Villages Carts. On the way home (about 5 mi. backfired about 5 times). Called them, the next day they replaced 2 washers in the carb & now I have 550+ mi. on it & it HASN'T BACKFIRED ONCE.
Contact a Yammaha dealer, problem WILL BE FIXED!
