Your first correspondence from the IRS will always be via US Mail.

The IRS NEVER calls. If they wanted to contact you it would be in the form of an official letter with an official letterhead and official envelope. Let this type of call go to your answer machine.

I unfortunately KNOW what I am talking about. We got a letter from the IRS and either did not open it, or whatever. So sometime later we received an official letter from them telling us we owed them money and they were putting interest on unless it was paid ASAP. We called the number they gave us and got a full and complete explanation, and we did indeed owe them money!

Yes. This is a well known scam.

As others have said; IRS will not telephone you.

When I get these calls I laugh at them and hand up.

We always Google the phone number on any suspicious phone calls. Also, we never answer any calls that we don't recognize the name on the caller ID.

Definitely a scam...I worked for the IRS and as others have said, IRS does not make telephone contact regarding tax issues, they send taxpayers notices via mail with ways for you to contact the IRS to respond to their notice.

Note: The IRS does not call people on the phone, they use regular US Mail only.

Suggestion: Learn to HOVER your mouse over any incoming email, if it shows and involves a single DOLLAR and it is not someone you know well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

THEN DELETE IT AS JUNK AND BLOCK IT FROM INCOMING MAIL.

On phone calls, do not respond, or punch ########## several times and hang up. This will confuse their computer as an invalid number and it will be removed from their call list.

Slight Correction..............The IRS does make calls. Never say Never. I have received calls from the IRS relating to a business return. I have not heard the IRS calling regarding personal returns. Just a FYI.
