This dog appears to be a pit bull. Anyone considering adopting a pit bull should read up very carefully on this breed, and contact their home owners insurance carrier to make sure they have coverage. Pit Bulls are banned from many communities across the United States, including many military bases.

I was going to post the same - and saw that you already had. Pit Bulls can be extremely gentle - but also can be unsafe. It depends much on how the animal was raised. They are also very strong dogs - and for many of us getting older, this can be a challenge.

I hope all dogs can find a good home - many of Michael Vick's dogs were placed in homes - but the prospective owner deserves and NEEDS to understand the breed.

I am the owner of the two year old AmStaff that was being advertised to give away to a good home. Macy is a very gentle, playful American Staffordshire who is trained to be social. She is a very loving 50 pound 2 year old who needs more space to run and play. I am due to have spinal surgery soon and will no longer be able to care for her properly. All the fuss about her being a pit bull is in-correct. Sure, they are related only in the fact that they resemble each other, but dogs are a reflection of their owners. Macy is a wonderful dog that is full of love.

Bleegs, I'm so sorry that you are in this position and cannot keep your beautiful Macy. She is a beautiful looking animal and I'm sure that she has had a loving home with you. The pity is that these animals have been exploited and given such a bad rap. Some of Michael Vick's abused dogs have been adopted and evaluated as loving and gentle dogs so to say that all pit bulls or Amercian Staffs are bad to the bone is just wrong. It only requires the one right person to come along and give her the home she deserves. Good luck and don't give up.

I truly hope you find a good home for Macy. These dogs can be extremely loving and gentle pets. I do agree they need someone who is not frail because they are strong dogs and will happily pull on a lead to get petted or play. I also would say they not good dogs to have around young children. Otherwise, unless they have been bred or trained to fight, they're truly great dogs who have gotten a reputation they don't deserve. Good luck!

About six months ago we lost our wonderful Springer Spaniel Val.....after 16 years of love and kisses. I started browsing local shelters online listings to adopt and actually visted a a couple of shelters. A heart tugging experience for sure. The majority of critters there....Orange County shelter for one...are pit bulls or mixes thereof. They are friendly and don't deserve the bad rap. Most of these beautifal animals will be put down. What a shame. I'm still looking for a best friend...but for a Springer Rescue as I'm sort of devoted to the breed now. But my heart bleeds for critters with no hope for a home. Go there sometime and look into their eyes. A bad rap for sure.
