View Full Version : The Village idiot at the gate

TheWarriors

Approached the gate a few moments ago and had one of those people fly behind another person getting through the gate instead of waiting for the gate to close and then using their card to open it again.

First mumbled a few words to myself about the lack of respect some people have but then thought perhaps it was an emergency at home or nature calling unexpectedly and that person couldn’t wait.

Low and behold 90 seconds later I️ met the Village Idiot at the mailboxes. No emergency, just proof that it takes a Village to have an idiot and I’m sure they are not an endangered species.

I had a man in his 60"s driving a black motor scooter do that to me. I wanted to ring his neck. Scared the poop out of me.

It's that time of year. The gate repairmen will be working overtime. Four gates taken out on Canal Street

Sometime ago this subject came up in our small group of friends and one of the guys said when someone tail gates him through the gate he slams on his brakes and they almost rear end him. It's tempting, but very dangerous, if the guy is not wound too tight it could turn into a road rage incident! :boom:

Perhaps I sense a reference to seasonal residents, and if I am remiss, my apologies. Rest assured that I have seen plenty of gates down, some almost right after they have been repaired, throughout the summer. What I would say is that the offenders are either in the "idiot" or "entitled" gene pool. The good news is that where they do identify the offenders, they are made to pay for the repairs. I wish that this could happen 100% of the time.

Help me understand the emotional toll this seems to have taken on you and what does it have to do with respect. Calling someone the Village idiot seems a little over the top.

Sure Paper1, no big emotional toll on me but Florida is a no fault state so when the idiot disrespects other drivers and their rightful turn to proceed at the gate crossing, the risk is high for an accident in which the driver involved in an accident which is not their fault will have their insurance rates raised regardless. Not to mention the likelihood of breaking the gate we all pay to fix. I’ll stand behind my comment on referencing him as the Village Idiot ;)

Check out the Facts before you throw the Idiot harpoon at a great person there new person. If you knock down a gate arm in a car you pay for the repair not all of us. It's somewhere between $250 :$: and $300 :$: per gate and the knocker downer pays the toll not all of us if your plate is on file. Best to beware of your surroundings take it slow and take it easy on being critical to your fellow Villager. :loco:

Cars going in tandem to exit the neighborhood through the gates at Odell Circle south and Mallory are very common. I've seen it also at Caroline but at this gate, the cars went through in tandem entering the community. I watched four cars and one motorcycle enter before the gate made any attempt to come down. I've seen as many as 6 cars go through these gates as they exit before the gates attempt to come down. The Odell south and Mallory gates seem to have a delay before they come down for the exit of the neighborhood. On the way into the neighborhoods, the gates comes down right away so only one car can get through. It's been like this for over a year that I have lived in Mallory. Probably longer too.

It's been many years since I've seen a community with gates, where you have to use a card to gain entry.

I dare say that if the developer would install up-to-date gates and decals for vehicles, it probably would solve the problem of those who have the need of sneaking with the car in front of them!

On second thought a big fat NO. We should have decals instead of the obsolete cards anyway. This is 2017, not 1980!

Not a good idea beside possible injury the guy intentionally slamming on the brakes has a liability problem

When the gates were removed for Irma, I don't recall reading about an increase in collisions between autos and carts, so a legitimate question would be...do we really need them?

Given that the gates are on public roads to begin with and we are not an actual 'gated community'...all they really do is give a false sense of living in a gated community.

That depends on whether you drive an electric or gas cart, save seats at the square...or own a dog that poops in other people's yards or at the mail stations. :D

Bingo! Correct on all points, Cold, except you forgot one . . .

Most of those who adore the gates have given themselves a false sense of security. They do nothing to prevent break-ins or anything else.

And please -- we don't need more comments regarding the cameras. :blahblahblah:

I think the gates serve us well. For one thing they allow for golf carts to pass and curb a lot of criminal activity as they know their picture will be taken and escape is not so easy. I personally like the friendly gate keepers and the jobs it provides them are a benefit too. I think that after Irma a lot of people were staying put so that's not the best argument for the lack of benefit we get from having them. Hey we all knew they were here when we bought into the whole village package. If I have any complaint about the design it is that there is no provision for dogs to do their business except on the street or on lawns. And I will add that the vast majority of residents pick up after their pups. I just came back from a trip outside the villages and was surprised to see so much dog poop in so called good neighborhoods. To hats off to all the good drivers and dog owners and to our friendly gate people. I feel a whole lot safer and lucky to be here.

If following a golf cart at Hendry and Pinellas, I will caboose to get through the gate without waiting for it to come down and then press the button. What harm can there be? But not with Autos.

I believe all these stories, These people were like that when they were growing up and when they were teens. Always trying to get ahead of the game with no respect. I also believe these are the peoples who have changed our lives as we live it today. They have displayed this behavior to their children and grandchildren and created a culture of NO RESPECT, which is the heart and soul of our country right now.

There is a book with a title something like-THE GOOD OLD DAYS WERE NOT AS GOOD AS YOU REMEMBER.

We had some 16mm movies of our family that I had never seen. As far as I know they were taken by my uncle who was a WWII combat photographer. We had never seen them, frankly because we never had a 16mm projector.
If, it does not make sense to some of you, the home movies you might remember were 8mm. The 16mm was far more expensive for the camera, the film, even the processing.

We all remember those two stick, ice bars. I remember, like most kids tossing the stick in the street. I remember, my parents screaming at me. I remember a swift wack on my butt-PRE-CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES. In my memory
I remembered the streets were far cleaner.

I had those 16mm movies transferred to dvd and SURPRISE-the streets were filthy. My parents were far younger than I remembered. The sea saw-heaven forbid-
had a steel pipe handle situated just so as to knock you teeth out when my heavier sister would hop off.

A little off-topic, but what is a two stick ice bar?

How lucky you are to have those films done by a pro.

Calling an impatient, rude, entitled, driver the "Village Idiot", may be slightly incorrect because that implies exclusivity. Actually, if the one in question goes missing we won't have to search long because there are plenty of others for replacements. Every day several can be observed practicing for the role. But, without them for comparison, the rest of us would not appear to be so perfect. So they really do serve an unintentional purpose after all.

You could break them into 2 parts and share.(we were poor) Fudgesicles only had 1 stick. They both cost the same from the ice cream truck...7 cents. Seems like 100 years ago.

I'm going to let the rest of your rant slide without rebuttal :D, but am curious in regards to your comment about the gates.

Exactly what "legal requirements"...are you referencing?

Please provide some type of proof...that they "are there to fit legal requirements."

Thanks. :ho:

I do remember breaking them in two on the edge of the kitchen counter or the kitchen table. Those were the ones our mother bought at the grocery store and kept in the freezer. The ones from the ice cream man we somehow managed to keep all to ourselves. But I usually went for the fudgesicles or creamsicles. And so went my allowance.

The gates are there "to fit legal requirements???" Baloney!
There are no legal requirements that said TV has to have gates.
Where did you ever get that??!?
