View Full Version : Wildwood to prohibit Golf Carts on roads south of SR44

The agenda pack for the upcoming Wildwood city commission meeting shows a proposed change to the city code to prohibit golf carts on public roads south of SR44 outside of golf cart communities. This seems to be a pre-emptive move to keep golf cart traffic confined to current and future developments (i.e. VOF and SO) and force the development and inclusion of golf cart/multi-modal paths as primary routes for golf carts.

According to the same section of the city code it would also be permissible to dive to Wildwood in a golf cart assuming you find a route that meets the 35MPH rule.

Also of interest in the city code is section (f) that states the drive of the golf cart you must be 16 year of age and not The Villages standard of 14. This would mean that south of SR44A in the Brownwood, Alden Bungalows, Antrim Dells, VOF, and SO which are all in Wildwood the minimum age to operate a golf cart is actually 16. Won't this create a stink if they decide to enforce it.

I always thought 14 was too young to drive a golf cart in TV.

Anyone can put anything they want on an agenda. Do you really think that The Villages would allow that to happen? I'm sure that the developer has many ways of applying pressure to the Wildwood City Commision to get them to allow golf cart where they want them.

I thought the 35 mph rule is for street legal carts only. Regular carts are restricted to 20 mph roads. Is this not correct ? Can a municipality override this rule and if so has Wildwood done this in sections outside The Villages ?

:what: Do you have a cart and live here? First two sentences are both wrong!

 Ever think it may be to keep other carts out?

Regular carts are limited to 19.9 mph driving speed. It has nothing to do with road speed limits. Regular carts are limited to using multi-modal paths or paths strictly for golf carts. Florida law limits street legal carts to driving on a street with maximum speed limit if 35 mph.

Every municipality can pretty much set their own laws for where a golf cart can be operated.

1 Yes I have two carts and I have probably lived here a lot longer than you
2. You are right about the 20 mph I just remembered Bailey Trail for example is 30 or 35 mph (I think) and the cart lane is part of the road. After further thought I believe the rule is carts both street and non street legal are limited to roads 35 mph or less.

I guess I am missing something. It was previously reported there would be 2 golf cart bridges across 44, and one across the turnpike, as well as golf cart paths as part of the new villages south of 44, so as far as I can see the developer is providing the same level of golf cart accessibility as the rest of TV, as well as connectivity to the existing part of TV. Also, as far as I can see, there is no legal golf cart accessibility in Wildwood proper. So IMHO, Wildwood is just formalizing what currently exists north of 44 to the area south of 44, no golf carts on the roads outside of the golf cart communities.

Agree and I'm sure there will be a cart path along Buena Vista when it is extended. I don't believe they would stop access to Paddock Square via golf carts, they need dollars to be spent up there and south of 44 will be bringing plenty up there.

Street Legal are limited to roads 35 and less.

Golf carts are limited to roads UNDER 35.... that means 30 and less. (Did you ever notice Morse Blvd. is 30 mph north of 466 and 35 mph south of 466?)

Went to the GOLF CART SAFETY CLASS in 2004 when I moved here. May I ask when did you attend?

You did miss something. You are correct about the bridges that are apparently in the works. The point is streets outside of golf cart communities are affected, in this case if a bridge is built across SR44 near Brownwood it would be illegal to drive your cart to Sparr, Verizon, Alliance RV, and the other stores in that area because you would need to use a city street not a part of a golf cart community to reach these stores. This would create another shopping area like the one in Lady Lake were Best Buy is located that is not cart accessible (yes the Rolling Acres Rd is a little different issue but the effect is the same for merchants and shoppers alike).

If you read the attachment in the original post you will see that the specifically delineates different treatment north and south of SR44, north of SR44 golf carts are allowed on Wildwood streets with 35 MPH or less speed limits without the golf cart community restrictions, south of SR44 if it's not in a golf cart community, it's not allowed.

South of 44 there are very few streets that anyone would have a need to drive a golf car on. 301 is between 45 and 55 mph, 468 is 55, all the county roads going south are 45 and 55. I don't know how you would get to any of the slower speed limits without having to use 301 or 468 at least at this point. I would assume that when they build commercial areas they will be accessible by golf carts as it would be a little foolish not to include them in the plans.

Silly me, I was making an assumption, that being with all of the recent property purchases, TV would be able to provide GC access to these shopping areas by a GC path at the rear areas. However, I do agree that if this is not done there will be areas cutoff from GC access. I guess we will just need to wait and see the final plans.

The Morse Blvd is a great observation. I think it was 2003 when I attended GOLF CART SAFETY CLASS.

You know, I thought so also, but I went to Ace Hdwe. in Wildwood on Wednesday and saw a cart parked at Ace. As I was leaving, turning on that street by the fire station, there was another cart driven by a young woman with a baby, heading toward Ace.

You're not missing anything. Your "formalizing" comment is right-on imho. There will be golf cart access for all Villages facilities and reasonable off-site facilities, just like in all TV.

Do you really want to drive your golf cart on the county roads south of 44? I wouldn't. Wouldn't you think the developer will build cart road connecting the hundreds of acres they plan on building south of 44? IMO this would keep wildwood golf carts from driving down the country road and getting killed.
