It's the Chinese Amazon -- Ali-Baba -- It is in competition with Amazon, not part of it.

BaBa the Chinese Amazon? Does this mean the Chinese will be able to sell direct to US customers without any $$$ staying in the US. Wil BaBa be one of the 40% of Chinese companies with government ownership.?

Amazon is small outside the US.

BABA doesn't need the US, they are going to dominate the rest of the world.

Gov't ownership???.............good question. Usually, once successful, the Gov't wants a piece. The Gov't may be giving BABA a pass to encourage more growth companies to come or be developed.

I looked into BABA when it first opened. it is not really a retail operation like Amazon. You kind of have to buy warehouse quantities and paying is very complicated because you can't pay in American dollars/

Alibaba is the world's largest and most valuable retailer since April 2016, after it surpassed Walmart,[9] with operations in over 200 countries,[10] as well as one of the largest Internet companies. Its online sales and profits surpassed all US retailers (including Walmart, Amazon and eBay) combined since 2015.[11] It has been expanding into the media industry, with revenues rising 3-digit percents year on year.[12][13] It also orchestrated China's Singles' Day into the world's biggest online and offline shopping day, with its own sales reaching over US$25.4 billion on 11 November 2017.[14][15]

I'm long BABA but my friend made a fortune day trading it. She's coming to The Villages and using her profits to pay cash for a house. Wish I had taken her advice a year ago...

I am through chasing individual stocks. Track record is positive but would have done better over the years in an S&P 500 fund. Wealth preservation is the key now.
