I just googled “steps to becoming a Florida resident”.
A lot of factual information.
Which cannot always be said about what you might get on here.

All you really need to do is to live here and get a driver's license. Not very complicated.

From what I now see you I need various verifications, get the Homestead Exemption, transfer my vehicles, get new insurance, etc. Not quite as simple as getting a drivers license and living here. Thank you all for the helpful links and information.

You don't need a homestead exemption or insurance if you don't own any property. A renter has just as much right to become a Florida resident as a homeowner. And, you don't need to register to vote or have a bank account as others have suggested.

But we do own property so got to do it all. Forgot about the voting part.

Once we got the drivers license and registered the vehicles we went to county clerk and filled in this form (https://frontrunner-mccc.s3.amazonaws.com/migrate/DECLARATIONOFDOMICILE0.pdf). We then took the approved form to the tax office and filed for Homestead Exemption.

I never filled out that form, but I have a homestead exemption for my house. I am a Florida resident because I live here.

Many illegals will be glad to hear that interpretation.

I don't agree with it, but I think illegal aliens are Florida residents and are entitled to the homestead exemption if they own a house.

file for homestead before 1/1/17 or you'll have to wait another year

Country tax office on 466 by Morse. You can do it all there and they will walk you through it. Driver's license, car registration, register to vote and file for Homestead Exemption. Just go to the insurance agent outside that gives you best deal. So much easier than any other state we lived in.

Paid property tax there yesterday, saved a stamp.

That is not correct. For the 2018 exemption, you need to own the property on January 1, 2018, and file for the exemption by March 1, 2018.

Not correct. You need to file by 12/31/17 to get your exemption in 2018. Any filing after 12/31/17 will take effect in 2019 for the tax exemption.

I don't think so. I just called the tax office. You have to own the property on January 1, 2018, but you have until March 1, 2018 to file the form for the 2018 exemption. For 2017, it is too late to file for the exemption.

Yes I did it all there at that building, but if I remember
correctly good to have proof of car insurance policy
written by a Florida agent before vehicle registration.
Drivers license, car registration, plates,
and voter registration on left side,
and homestead on right side of building!
Good luck OP, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be, I found the people I dealt with there are very helpful!

Do you really have to bring cars to the tax office to register it. My wife retires at the end of January at which time we will be moving there but we would like to take care of all this when we are down at the end of December. We have 3 cars but will only bringing one down for that trip.

You need to bring your car there for them to verify the VIN. No big deal...they walk out and look at your vin number and confirm it.

So I guess I register the one we bring down in December and when the other 2 come down in February we will register them.

There is a form that could be filled out and used instead of the actual inspection. An official (Leo etc) where the car is located verifies the vin and mileage.

Florida dmv will give you the Florida registration and plates if you give them the form and the fees.

I have done this.

That’s what we were told this past December when we went in. I’m glad I didn’t put it off since the Sumter website said I had till March.

There is also a veteran exemption of $5000 in addition to the Homestead exemption, if you are a veteran.

All of the items listed here are steps that are good to take should you ever be questioned by the state you are leaving (and are no longer giving your money to). I have even seen states go through peoples credit card bills to try to prove they were not in Florida for for at least 6 months.

I sometimes get you confused with a poster whose name on this Forum is Retired Guy.

He is a recently retired Air Plane Pilot who diligently looked for just the right house to buy or build for a couple of years.

Id be curious where you lived because there is no way any of my local police would even bother with a request like that. They were busy with real police work.

Id be curious where you lived because there is no way any of my local police would even bother with a request like that. They were busy with real police work.Actually I was already physically in Florida my car was physically in Georgia at the time with NY plates on it. I sent the half completed form to Georgia, my friend took It to a local cop who verified vin and mileage, they mailed it to me in Florida, I registered the car and I mailed the plates to Georgia. He mailed N.Y. plates directly back to N.Y. dmv.

I was about to leave the country for a couple months and needed that Florida car registration to complete my residency. Or so I assumed, it was late January and the homestead cutoff is March 1st. Maybe I could have done the Florida residency homestead with just my house deed.

My 2012 Honda Accord cost $400 a year in Wisconsin and the same coverage in Florida is $1200! No wonder people give up cars for golf carts!

I recently declared domicile in Fla and you first need a Fla license to obtain insurance in the state. Yes, they do verify VIN number to register the vehicle. Then go to the county office and obtain voter registration and apply for homestead rebate (with the rebate you'll save $$$ on property tax. It was easy...I did it all in one day.

Can you explain that one more, please? $5000 off of what, and one time only or every year?Sorry for the delay. $5000 comes off your home value every year, just like homestead exemption. You need a letter from the VA showing you are a veteran. Go to the VA website.

Sent from my SM-G930V using TapatalkShould have been more clear. The $5000 exemption applies to vets with a minimum 10 percent disability. This is in addition to the normal Homestead Exemption available to Florida residents. All went well, official residents of Florida now, one stop shopping at the dome building. That would have taken a week in Ohio but less than one hour here. Thanks for all of the advice.

An additional caution. Defer income such as windfalls until you are truly a Florida resident if you are coming from a state that has a state income tax. I bought a house in Florida and moved into it after I retired. I got a substantial bonus after I retired and was living in Florida. I did not change my employment registered address and thus they deducted state income tax from that bonus and sent it to Massachusetts. I had not yet gone to all the Florida resident steps and had no basis that Massachusetts would accept.

Thus, I would caution you not to accept simplistic advice regarding this issue. Make sure that your employment address properly reflects Florida as your residence, take all necessary steps to make Florida your residence. Florida residence affects more than a homestead allowance on your home. It can affect being taxed on income by your previous state. Once they have the money, it then becomes your task to try to get it back.

That is why God invented attorneys and CPA's. By using them after going through the simple process down here, you would not have had your problems. I would recommend that anyone changing their residency to exactly that.
