View Full Version : Truth’s irrelevance in the age of Trump

Unmooring from the truth is a foundational tactic of totalitarian regimes.

New reporting from The Post and the New York Times tells us that Trump has made a habit of suggesting privately that the “Access Hollywood” tape of his vulgar comments about women was faked.

In the words of the Princeton philosopher Harry Frankfurt, Trump is not a liar but a “bullsh---er” — a person who acts not to obscure the truth but rather speaks without regard for the distinction between truth and falsehood. The liar must operate with respect for the truth in order to reject it.

A person such as Trump goes through the world glibly rejecting the existence of knowable facts. He knows (or should know) that the “Access Hollywood” tape is real; he was there, after all. It’s just that the reality of the tape is irrelevant. Truth is beside the point.

Great another repetitive thread. Seek help

LYING AND MAKING PERSONAL UNSUBSTANTIATED ACCUSATIONS, OR EVEN TRYING TO SUBSTANTIATE SUCH ACCUSATIONS FROM THE OVAL OFFICE.....

cannot be called to American citizens enough.

When you give in to the preponderance of lies, and repeat them or defend them (the undefensible) then you have become the liar also.

I do not expect him to resign in anyway soon or at all.

He has already torched all american institutions with false claims and slander and he knows he is not done.

If anything, he will increase his lying rhetoric to arouse those idiots who actually believe what comes from the mans mouth.

He wants to increase the separation of all americans. He never had any thought of even attempting to bring the country together and this is not going to end well at all.

Trump’s tweets appear to be part of an effort to weaken public confidence in American institutions, not just DOJ and the FBI, but also the “so-called” courts, the “fake news” media, the supposedly lying, incompetent intelligence community, and others. Trump is destroying Americans’ opinion of the importance of law enforcement to the country’s welfare, about the integrity of the the FBI, the free press, the courts, and about commitment to the rule of law.

So Obama was a liar? Where are your examples?

Trump is a pathological liar....

Trump has said 3 million illegals voted in the last election! Where is the proof of that? We all know you have to show a picture ID to vote here in Florida and in Colorado. Most states now require picture ID's.

How about his claim that thousands of Muslims were cheering in NJ when the Twin Towers came down on 9/!!. That claim was investigated by the New Jersey Attorney General...they could not verify the claim.

Trump said he got to know Putin “very well” while the two were on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” Nope. The two men were interviewed separately, in different countries thousands of miles apart.

Many of his lies start with I heard....

Trump said he “heard” the Obama administration plans to accept 200,000 Syrian refugees — even upping that wildly inaccurate number to 250,000 in another speech. Nope and nope. The number is about 10,000.

Trump “heard” that Obama is “thinking about signing an executive order where he wants to take your guns away.” If so, he misheard. What Obama reportedly considered was requiring large-volume private gun dealers to conduct background checks, not confiscating firearms from those who own them.

The Republican party has lost the moral high ground in the age of Trump. The Tax bill is just a rehash of Trickle Down Economics, the middle class is getting screwed. TDE doesn't work. Just ask Kansas!
