Active Shooter...something to think about

Unfortunately in today's times we have to think about what we would do if an active shooter entered our church, school, supermarket, etc. For thirty years as a school teacher, we have been teaching the children to hide (shelter in place with lights off, door locked and out of sight as possible). Remember the Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooting....people ducked down and tried to hide...most in plain sight. Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Surveillance Video - YouTube (https://youtu.be/78PiE4vmeJ8) We were asked as teachers to listen to the 911 tape of a teacher in the library during the Columbine High School shooting...she repeatedly told the students to get down under a desk. It has been protocol for years....and probably our first instinct (duck and cover).

Our new protocol is nicknamed ALICE and includes such things as Counter: create noise, movement, distance or a distraction. Lockdown and barricade: lock the door and move anything you can to barricade the door. Evacuate: run, if possible, get out (the students in the library at Columbine had an exit door that led directly outside) Alert: recognize the threat and act as soon as possible (override the panic and freeze response) Inform: communicate (via 911, text, intercom, etc.) where the threat is to others (I can evacuate if I know the threat is on the other side of the building from my location vs. barricade if it is close)

Interesting information....unfortunately something we must think about.

If teachers, with proper training, were allowed to carry concealed weapons, that active shooter would soon become the extinct shooter.

In an active shooter situation when confronted with the mayhem and confusion a potential armed responder needs to remember they will become "another shooter" in all the confusion....a person with a gun.

A subject that is not very often discussed....openly.
And one of significance. All who carry are well intended. All who carry have varying degrees of training and experience.
All who carry need to be consciously aware they become "a shooter" in the eyes of many in panic mode.

A very important concern. How to know the good guys from the bad guys when bullets are flying? That Las Vegas shooter would have appeared like many Villagers when walking around those casinos.

It could happen in the Villages but is probably quite unlikely but best to be prepared if it does.

The concealed carry idea is a two edged sword. Yes, a bad guy shooter could be taken out by a good guy shooter - or the good guy shooter could accidentally take out bystanders. Very, very few of the carriers in The Villages have used a handgun in a stressful shootout situation ever and those who have, not in years.

My advice is to stay alert wherever you are and to not be complacent that something will never happen. Know options to leave quickly.

A concealed carrier at the town square just may have had the Happy Hour special when he (or she) wrongly thinks they heard someone yell "Gun" and whips theirs out. A chain reaction of slightly tipsy senior John Wayne wannabees make for a tragic scenario. Not likely, we hope, but certainly possible. N'cest pas?

is someone over imbibing before,
during and after happy hour,
and then driving their vehicle home while severely impaired!
