My brother has just been told, by his doctor in Missouri,
that he has two small spots on his lung. He is only in Missouri for Christmas, but having recently moved to TV, he still goes back to his doctor in Missouri. Cancer has not been confirmed, but due to past history need the best place available for follow up.

His doctor suggested that he continue with this in Florida. My question is, where do you think is the best cancer center in the area?

My first recommendation for health is always Mayo Clinic, but perhaps not for cancer.

We are so sorry to hear about your brother! We just returned from 6 week radiation and surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. We had the fortunate experiene in staying in the Gaberiel House on the Mayo Grounds. I will not go into a lot of details but it accepts 28 patients, charges $35 a night and while we were there there were a few lung transplants a few heart transplants, liver, kidney, et al.
In addition they saved my wife's life. Needless to say Mayo would be the only option for us. :ho:

my husband started with shands in gainsville and they did not check past his bladder cancer for a year and a half. one scan at the beginning and nothing more. it moved to his kidney bothlungs, spleen lymph nodes and finally liver. he passed this past week. but after messing with shands we took him to moffit in tampa only about 80 minutes from here and his care there was excellent. i feel if we had gone there first he would still be with us. i have a friends that goes to mayos in jacksonville but it is quite far away. so moffit they were wonderful and never gave up still had things to try but it was just no use at one point. i also have never received one bill from them. pray this is nothing.

I'm sorry to hear of your brother's illness. When my wife was told she had lung cancer we looked for the Best doctor at the Best Hospital that treated the type of cancer she had. There are so many different types of cancer that you need to find the BEST. We ended up at Sloan Kettering in NYC. it was after visiting 6-7 hospitals around the country. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

I know you are getting advice to use several different facilities. I’m retired but was in Healthcare my entire career (and am not a physician). I’ve followed Moffitt since ground was broken. If I were in your brother’s situation (lung cancer) I would go to Moffitt. I’m very familiar with all the alternatives here in Florida.

Here is some preliminary info for you.

I'm interested to know why you would choose Moffit over Mayo, db. I've always assumed if cancer occurred in our family, we would leave the area for one of the big cancer centers.

IMO, the test of a cancer center rests with potential recognition by the National Cancer Institute. Moffitt is the ONLY NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida, and one of a very select group around the U.S.

Listen to what he is saying. I am often baffled by why locals are not aware of this resource just an hour or so away. It is not a secret.

Thank you all for your kind replies. I will pass them on to my brother. Hopefully he only need treatment for a spot, not cancer.

Moffitt in Tampa. My mom had lung cancer surgery there 8 yrs ago and credits them with saving her life. She received wonderful care from Drs and nurses and has had no recurrence since then.

My husband was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.
Dr. ROhatgi here in TV, at Florida Cancer Specialists, was excellent. I had him for 30 months after he was diagnosed. That exceeded what we expected by well over a year.
