Right now in NY it is very cold. Does anyone that lives in the Villages and came from New York or anywhere up north that gets very cold, miss the coldness.

Thinking of moving to the Villages and all set to go and even left my job, but there is this thought that maybe I will miss the NY winters. Maybe not the snow too much.

Born in Maine, grew up in Boston. Don’t miss the cold at all, and the snow even less.

One of the greatest gifts of Florida other than having a pool or being able to work on improving our health is the lack of the bitter cold you now are experiencing. I have seen people post that they miss the four seasons. If I want the Four Seasons I just put in a CD. We have two seasons here, Super Summer and the payoff which is now. It is colder now than last year. We were in the pool and very comfortable last New Years Eve at 11 PM. Not so much this year. Oh well, I still had shorts and a t-shirt on.

If you really, really miss the cold you can go back for a visit. I don't think you will. Happy New Year, keep packing. LOL.

I think you are over evaluating or you are not ready to make a major change. I would wait until I was ready.

But some folks have difficulties with all decisions. Only you can answer that. I hope you make the best decision for yourself and have a joyous New Year.

I have lived in upstate NY, south NJ, and Colorado.
No I do not miss driving in or shoveling snow, or the cold! The only thing I miss is lilacs, and I'll just have to live with that.

I was out and about yesterday and saw a girl running around in shorts and a slight coat here in the Villages and I had a jacket I would use in the -25 wind chill days in Minneapolis. Of course, I did not have the four layers I would have had on up there. And the face mask.

I have been in FL since 1996 and get cold rather easily.

Happy New Year to you also. Yes you are right. We are waiting for my son to get married in April in NY. I am wondering if we will ever get down there. Last year I was ready. Actually have two buyers that are interested in buying my house. I think it is the waiting around that is making me hesitant.

If you miss the cold and the snow you can always go ski-ing for a week. You'll probably find that will be enough, and you'll be looking forward to heading back to The Villages.

We are up north now and can't wait to get to our Villages home ASAP! It's currently -2 outside and the min/max thermometer says it got to -8 last night, and the wind is howling so I can only guess what the wind chill is? As an avid former skier I used to live for the winter, but with bad knees now, I have no need for cold and snow. What is worse is the ice, very dangerous and easy to slip and fall. Our dog doesn't even want to go out in this weather as her paws instantly freeze. Not to mention how short the days are up north. At the Villages the sun sets almost an hour later than up here, where it is pitch dark before 5 PM this time of year.
When we are up north we always wish we were at the Villages, when we are at the Villages we never wish we could go back north. Dam those responsibilities keeping us from becoming FROGS.

I believe TV has about 18,000 veterans, I think as a group those of us are use to change and moving all over the country and the world. Others who have worked for large national companies have also experienced moves for their job. The ones who have grown up and lived their whole life near family in the same town or city probably have the greatest difficulty when making a major move. If you're considering the move strictly for improved weather, maybe seasonal stays are best for you. For the others looking for better weather, lifestyle, travel and adventure, then make the move to Florida without hesitation, because it's here.

The longest 20 years I ever spent in 30 months was in upstate New York. 144" of snow one winter!

Last night it was about 10 degrees F in NYC at midnight whereas in Moscow, Russia it was (only) 33 degrees F. Weird, huh?

Frankly, I prefer to live in a warm climate. If I want to see snow up close I can drive or fly to it up on a mountain somewhere and stay at a ski resort if I so choose.

So, in Feb '14 we left NY and spent 3 weeks in the Orlando area to escape Winter. It was great. Then the 3 weeks were up and we had to go back. When we arrived home, there were 27 inches of snow on our driveway. I barely made it past the snowdrift at our front door to get into the house so I could get the snowblower out. I spent the next 8 hours clearing the driveway. Definitely not smart.

So, in '15 we rented a house here in The Villages and stayed until all the snow melted back in NY. Much smarter!

While here in '15 we decided to buy a house so that we could come back every Winter and not have to pay the high rent. Genius!

Do it, you won't regret it.

My aunt and uncle who lived in New England much of their lives just left this morning after a brief stop at our house on their way back to Florida. They couldn't WAIT to get back. I don't think they miss the cold or snow one bit. I don't think I will either. When I was younger, I thought I couldn't live in an area that didn't have 4 seasons. My attitude has changed a great deal since then.

I think the thing that struck me the most was the $49 utility bill my tenant got in Florida this month versus the $240 utility bill we got up here. I said to my husband - we could have saved almost $200 just this month by having moved to Florida! To my misfortune, he didn't bite.

Counting down the winters here and will be happy to say good riddance. I figure if I ever yearn for any of the white stuff, it's nothing a short visit up north won't cure.

We're from Canada. :cold:
We've been seasonal residents in TV for the past ten years from November to April.

Yes it does get very cold up here in the Minneapolis area which I won't miss, and yes, it does get very hot and humid down in Florida during the summers which I would not miss either. So you make the decision...which would you not miss more?

Woke up this morning on Long Island and it was 7 degrees. At 7:00 our electric went out. Due to the extreme cold outside it immediately started to get cold in the house. Thank goodness only out for 1.5 hours. Worried about our pipes freezing.

My AC bill in FL has never approached the cost of fuel oil in the winters of Taxachusetts. We don’t miss the snow, cold, winter, and..oh yes - the outrageous real estate and income taxes.

Originally from upstate NY, Lake Placid to be exact, originally from Utica/Rome area. Do I miss the snow, ice, white outs, black ice, shoveling/snow blowing, driving behind snow plows, being cold no matter how many layers? Um, NO! My husband is on the fence about it and says he 'enjoyed' the activity of it all . I think he misses hockey! but just today in the rainy chilly New Year's Day, he admitted he was cold (dressed in shorts and a jacket) and thinks he's becoming a Floridian. We don't live in the Villages yet but in southern FL trying desperately to get to sell the house and move to the Villages. He won't be able to hang out at the hockey rink in the Villages but there will be lots of other things to do! It is a big decision to move south. You have to be ready! Good luck!

I have the same heating system here in PA that we have in our FL home. Both houses are all electric. Of course, our FL home is much smaller. But even comparing utility bills with our cousins in FL, who have much larger houses, our bills up north on a monthly basis are almost always higher than theirs. Maybe one or 2 months ours is lower by like $20 or so.

So for us, moving to FL will be a big win in that sense. Maybe it depends on where you are coming from and the utility rates in your former area that makes it a different scenario for you.

We have not found the AC bills to be anywhere near what we paid up north. It is much more expensive to heat than to cool.

No, but I want a refund for this week when temps here will dive into the low 20's! Wasn't there some sort of "below freezing refund" warranty that comes with the monthly amenities fee? :D

We moved in Jan 2017 (well first 2 mos we rented) and on the ride down from NJ we were 5 miles ahead of a 28" blizzard in NC then the day we arrived (Jan 6th I believe) it was 30 degrees here.

Correct. We have lived all over the country and lived in Melbourne, FL three times and now live in the Minneapolis area. There is a difference among electric, gas, and propane in different places including the houses themselves.

If a buyer wants to know what the utility rates are like, he can ask the seller for copies of their bills for the past year.

Our electric bills are not high at all here in our 10 year old TV home with the original HVAC system. I'm really impressed at how efficient the system is and we keep our home very cool at 75 to 76 degrees all summer. Compared to what we paid in NJ in the summer for electric, Florida is a bargain!

Born and raised on Long Island. I LOVED the winters and the snow when I was a kid. It was so much fun to go sledding and build snowmen. Then I grew up and had to to drive to college then to work when I graduated. That was no fun.....at all.

I moved to south Florida for nearly 25 years and then moved back u north to New Jersey for 16 years. Had to do it all over again with the freezing temperatures, snow and ice. My hands in the winter months stayed cracked and bleeding no matter what lotion I used. I won't ever miss shoveling the white stuff and chopping away the ice. NEVER.

Living up north in the cold will always be more dangerous than living in the south with the heat. Driving is a very big problem in the cold climates compared to clear roads all the time in the south.

Circumstances have prevented us from moving into our house in TV at this time. However, I am from NY and cold days can be nice, as long the sun is out. Most time, if the sun is out, it is usually only part of the day. The days are mostly grey and short, and the nights can be long, as we hibernate in our warm cozy house, with boredom, and wait to go to bed. The question “is how cold is cold to you?” With cold, comes a whole set of problems. My last twelve hours are only reinforcing our decision to move to TV to be the right one- for us. Our last twelve hours have gone like this:

-Getting ready for bed, the back is still sore from shoveling days before, so, I took an OTC pain reliever.
-hubby and I lug 40 lb. bags of pellets up cellar steps to our
two pellet stoves.
- decided to take a shower, water pooling in bottom of shower-
the pipe froze ( first time in out 37 years of living in this house)
- taking steps to thaw and went to bed at 1:00 am
- woke up and it started snowing as we headed out to buy heat tape to wrap the frozen pipe. Eureka! We found it on the third try-it had been sold out.
- snow coming down fast now, decided to get kerosene as a
backup heating system-we often lose our electricity with wind &
snow. (Shame on us, we could have done this yesterday).
- we managed to get up the hill to our house as we skidded our
way up the road and driveway.

I only hope that I will remember moments like this when I am finally in The Villages and someone asks me if I miss the cold.

We went up last year to visit my kids but this year decided to wait until spring. Just can't do it anymore.

When we move to TV, our son's Christmas present is going to be plane tickets to visit us!:D

Yeah, truth be told, I can see that being a potential problem on this end too.

We will just spend more time with them in the nice weather. We have made wonderful friends here that we spend the holidays with so it is not so bad, it's just different.

When we closed in our lanai and put a Mitsubishi minisplit the weather here stopped bothering me -especially in Summer.
I feel like I’m outside but comfy.
This Christmas when my Son, D-I-L, and grand daughter came we were out there all the time.

They live in N.Y. and we miss them but would never move back.

We keep our up north house. Can fly up stay when ever we want, take care of obligations and I really enjoy the snow, and summer on a lake that you can swim in without a gator biting you. Two houses work well for us

From Associated Press

It was so cold in South Florida that iguanas fell from their perches in trees in suburban Miami. The reptiles became immobile when temperatures dipped below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius).

Now we know what cold is.....

Moved here in 2009 after 61 years on Long Island. Worked & was a Firemen in the snow & cold. Don't miss it one damn bit. The Fuel oil, electric, taxes , traffic & potholes are all gone now. Life here is a piece of cake and if I have to go back north for an Emergency it's a very short stay. Yea it's been cold for a short while but it'll be over soon and then it'll be back to shorts and outdoor activities again !

If you look at the morning temps here in The Villages yesterday and today, you will feel right at home. Only difference is the daytime temps are better. This is very unusual weather for Fl., but it happens. COME ON DOWN!

Cold to me means we take the car instead of the golf cart

:1rotfl: Thanks.

The last winter in CT was Hurricane Sandy and 3 1/2 feet of snow in one snowfall. Don't miss it one bit. In general, most people as they get older, get tired of the winters and dealing with snowy/icy weather conditions.

If one could afford it to keep two homes that would be ideal. Get away from the hot summers here and the winters in NY.

IMHO - Everyone is hesitant to make a big move but most people in TV, have not regretted it one bit. I know I love it here and would never move back to the Northeast.

They said they could not take the time off

For three years we tried to have a family reunion but with the kids scattered all over the country, it was impossible for them to find the time agreeable to all and their children.

My wife and I bought in The Villages when we were 49 years old. We both quit our respective professional jobs and just picked up and moved here. After moving here, we both easily found jobs that would take us through to our retirement ages. We spent 50 years shoveling the 3'-4' of snow that you could get overnight in our hometown of Oswego, NY at the east end of Lake Ontario. I don't miss that life one bit. I wouldn't care if I ever saw another snow flake for the rest of my life.

I give you credit to just pick up and leave your jobs before you can retire. It worked out for you I see. That was courageous!

Op if you have concerns about moving try renting long term in TV before selling up north.

We like many have two houses, like the changes of weather and really love leaving Summers in TV, for sitting at the lake where you can actually swim in. We plan on keeping our up north house so we can fly in anytime visit without intruding on others and enjoy the summers, and the holidays.
