So, I just upgraded my Comcast internet speed to 150 mbps. I tested the download speed on testmy.net and speedtest.net. The testmy.net result was 39 mbps and the speedtest.net was 180 mbps. Who do I believe?

I upgraded a while back and speeds were great. Now they're extremely slow, especially when I'm using Google as a browser. Throttling, you think? No more net neutrality.

speedtest.net has usually appeared to be pretty accurate. Run it a couple of times and if you are consistently getting a higher number than expected you can count yourself lucky. Just so you know, your results may be dependent on whether you are using Wi-Fi to your system or a cat5 (ethernet) cable. Typically, ISPs will ask for cat5 cable connected results if you are seeing underperformance (which doesn't appear to be the case for you). In the past, Comcast performance may have been impacted by other users on the same "loop". Not sure if that applies around here. I use CenturyLink and measured performance is almost always spot on.

Speed tests can be all over the place. My Comcast is advertised at 150 mbps like yours, and my desktop running Windows 10 gets 110 or so on the Xfinity speed test. It's on a wire to the router, and if I go over to Wi-Fi, it gets around 75. My 5th Generation Kindle Fire HD gets over 100 on the wi-fi. If I check them again on the same speed test, the numbers can be quite different. I feel as long as there is no obvious lag in downloads, my speed is fine. I asked a Comcast installer about the high speeds, and he said very few systems can get 150, but it's theoretically possible. He said any actual speed over 100 should result in outstanding performance.

Heheh...I agree 100% that the bottom line is all that matters. But I would say the threshold for that bottom line for most people is much lower. I've had Comcast 30mps service (which typically equated to about 25mps actual speeds) for a long time and it's been just fine. And I'm a bit of a techie. I'm even a much-older-than-average gamer. And my performance has been great. My speed was just doubled with no rate increase, so I'm a happy camper...at least for now. :)

I have their 100 mbps service and I get 120 down and 12.2 up

Try re-booting the modem. Simply unplug the modem, wait a few minutes. Then plug it back in and again wait a few minutes. Check you speed before and after doing this. Many times this helps if the modem is running slow.

Here's an update. On-line chatted with Comcast rep. (His/her English was a work in progress.) Said my modem was aging and a free replacement is being sent at no charge. Of course, I was subjected to a sales pitch for a home security system.

We also have Xfinity. Since they upgraded our Internet speed to 100 mbps, I have run speed tests using Ookla from various parts of our 1090 sq ft Villa. At 10’ from the router in the BR, the download speed was 119 mbps. In the K, it was 41. In the LR it was 69. I suspect that the metal studs in the interior partition walls may explain the dramatic difference in WiFi speeds. All of the speeds are respectable. I’d consider a mesh network but it might be overkill for a CYV. My fear is the metal studs might also degrade the mesh network as well.

I get 100 using the ethernet cable but only 17 wirelessly. I'm on my second router of the same make and model. I'm using a Medialink MLWR-AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Router. Manufacturer thought the router was defective and sent me a new one. Xfinity says I'm getting 100Mbps to the modem which I own.

Update: Found out the wireless card in my aging laptop is a dinosaur and is limited to speeds to 2.4GHZ. I either need a new laptop or can get by with a USB Wireless adapter capable of dual bands 2.4 and 5G.

You’ve identified the cog. May we assume your WiFi router is dual band. The speed difference between 2.4 and 5 MHz is really that significant. I had all of my devices “forget” the 2.4 MHz Network.
