Nothing will ever be as it was at "home".

Might as well ask for the Phillies and Eagles to play on the polo fields LOL When I visit the folks Publix usually does a pretty fair mock up with Boars Head meats. NOT the same but it'll do... At least they do it in Vero Beach...

If you are ever in the vicinity of The Paddock Mall in Ocala you might try "Charley's". It is on the left just as you enter the food court.
I have tried every conceivable location in Florida for years to find a Philly Cheese steak. "Charley's" is as close as it gets so far.
I haven't found a decent hoagie, sub, hero, grinder or what ever. The closest is "Franklin Street Grinder" in Hartford, Ct. Those ladies knew how to custom make a grinder. Then topping it off with a canolli(sp?) from the bakery next door made a perfect meal.
I regress. That was 22 years ago. It is probably history now.

I have tried hoagies at several places and I find that the Publix in Mulberry makes a pretty good one. I don't care if it is the Publix meat or the Boar heads meat since I put provolone, onions, lettuce, tomato, Jalapeo peppers, banana peppers, oregano, salt and pepper and oil and vinegar on it. After that who cares what the meat is and it is a dollar less for Publix meat.
It is like putting Stoli's in a Bloody Mary. Waste of good booze.

AS a young person I operated three sandwich shops in the Philly area. The best cheese steak that I have found in this area is a Sweat Cream in the shopping center by Belk's. They have the grill on to about 6 P.M. They are good, and don't come with green peppers.:pepper2:

Jersey Mikes has very good hoagies; however, I'm not sure if they're going open up anytime soon. There was a notice posted on their door by Lake County about additional fees they had to pay for a delay in opening!!! It's located across from Fusion Restaurant (closed recently) and next to Moes. I saw it on my way to Target. We really enjoyed their hoagies in the Pittsburgh area (especially during football games)!! I really hope they open up.

. . . . But, on the other hand, 'home', at least for most of us, didn't have the beautiful Florida sunshine and sunsets, music on the town squares, the cute little gekkos, golf cart paths to use as roads, beaches only a short drive away, and so on . . . . ! We are blessed to be here.

I like the Phillies at Big City, Spanish Springs, and they use amorosa rolls, freshly baked....real meat, not steak ums, and real provolone cheese. You can add green peppers if you like. They are 6.50 for a nine inch sandwich, and its loaded with steak. Best Value in town

I read a thread awhile ago that recommended Sweet Cream for cheese steaks. I tried one last Saturday. I ordered it with. The onions were not cooked enough and the "steak" was so tough I didn't even finish it. Will not return.

the best cheese steaks are now at chi's grill & ice cream next to Hallmark on 441. If you want they'll make it with grilled chicken which is great also. the bread is wonderful.

:cus: Try the new menu Cheese Syeak @ Beef O'Bradys. It is small but it is on an Amorosa bun.
For a sub I prefer Sweet Bay. larger and lower in price than Publix.{ $5.95}:icon_hungry:

Sally,
I agree with Loreen. Of course, the cheesesteaks aren't as good as Capriotti's.

Jersey Mikes is gone. I did love his "big kahuna"
Sweat Creams is now CHI'S GRILL
They have a version of a PHilly that is 'pretty good'. The nice thing is he's very customer oriented and will make it like you want it as for onions, mushrooms peppers if you want. Hand cut ho-made fries if you like that sort of thing and I think he has "whiz".
Funny story . . .I told a couple girls from Scotland about whiz and they couldn't believe it.

I thought the Cane Garden Philly cheese-steak was pretty good, but I'm not from Philly. They serve it open-faced, and you have to fold it into a sandwich. Messy.

We were not excited about Chi's.
Gator's Dockside makes a pretty good Philly Cheese Steak.

Publics and Sweet Bay have some delicious hoagies, custom-made, that I would recommend! Mmmmnnn!

Zcaveman, What didn't you like about it? The guy that makes them says he doesn't make "philly cheese steaks"

I was looking through my subscriptions and noticed this post. Don't l know how I missed it before.
I checked with the deciding vote in restaurants (my wife) and was reminded that indeed Chi's does not make Philly cheese steaks. Somewhere we were under the impression that they did. We purposefully went to Chi's for the Philly cheese steak. We checked the menu and the store itself and decided that it was not for us.
Also, there was no one eating any sandwiches when we were there and there were several people there. So we left.
So I guess when I said Chi's was not to my liking, it was the place and the menu. It was nothing to do with the food. I should have been more definitive in my post.
In after thought, I should have not said anything about Chi's.
Sorry for misleading anyone.

Hi Z!
The owner once told me that he doesnt make Philly's because he is not from Philly and does not want to insult anyone from that area. I myself am a Nyer that has never had a "philly cheese steak" but I do think these are great!
I also think people dont know they are there & still think they are sweet creams

Their could never be a cheesesteak or hoagie for that matter, better than Capriotti's (Wilmington, Delaware). Will go try Chi's, but actually found a decent one by accident last night: of all places: Taki's (Greek/Italian) in shopping center next to Lowes on 27/441. Will go back again for their cheesesteak.
:icon_hungry:
Went to Chi's yesterday... It was awesome. We both had the Cheese Steak subs and hand cut fries. Just like back home (MA). Personally I do not like Philly Cheese steak subs, but I loved these. We definitely will go back.

Thanks...will try Taki's. But the best hoagie I ever had was from Gooey Louie's and Shanks in South Philly!

You have to go to Chi's! The have Amoroso rolls shipped in from Philly and the cheesesteaks are just like up north! The even have sweet peppers! And if you are from up north, you know it's hard to find a good steak/sub around here! The also have an italian sub! And yes ut is WAY better than that Subway stuff! Try it out!
I also found out that the owners , well he was a chef for Tampa Buc's! The are really cool! We luv going there when we have a fix for steaks & subs!
