SO disappointed and upset with TOTV seller who sold their cabinet out from under me after agreeing to buy it!
Trust in sellers here would have tanked if it was not for Whooter whose transaction was super in spite of his being so ill! Luv ya guy! Hope you're feeling better!

I don't blame you for being P. O.'d.
There is no excuse for that kind of treatment to you or for their behavior.
I'd be curious to know what they said.
Sellers who do that kind of thing should be banned from listing their items.

Same thing happened to me. Told them I'd like to buy item ASAP, but seller had dentist appt. and he would call me when he got home. I never heard back so I called back and was told that his wife sold item while he was gone.

Happens to the best of us who have positive intentions and then you get there and item you wanted is gone!!! Can't get there soon enough!!

From personal experience, too many buyers with promised intention to buy but don’t show up. Now it’s first come first serve.
Maybe these wannabe buyers should be banned instead.

LOL Seller was not available until 11:45am...I called at 1pm and got answering machine...called again approx 2:30pm and got answering machine...3pmish I got text item was sold! Persaps suspend seller's privilege for 60 days rather than ban them.

I can’t count how many times I have sat home waiting for a buyer to show up who never does and turned away others that were interested for an item I advertised. Now I tell anyone upfront that you better call right before you leave to make sure I still have the item because it is subject to prior sale. Also if they do show up they often start negotiating again or change their mind.
Many people have paypal or now Applepay Personal these days and I tell them to send me payment up front if they are sure they want it.

Unless you gave a deposit, you weren't stiffed. First to come with cash deposit or entire amount in cash is who gets the item. A promise to purchase isn't worth a thing.

First come first served. I owned a retail store for a couple years and can't even count how many people asked me to hold something and never showed up. I quickly changed my policy to "I have it in stock subject to prior sell" call before you drive to the store. Something would apply to a personal item I would be selling.

I say let them continue to sell but hindered by locking them in a stock.

The early bird gets the worm.
It is hard to refuse a buyer with cash in hand.

I don't think you were stiffed. The first buyer who shows up with the cash gets the item. A verbal promise to buy on the phone isn't worth anything.

Are we sure of this? I have heard several cases where elderlies accept cash deposits on their houses only to refuse to return the deposits when they change their minds about selling the house.

It is beyond me that anyone would go through the hassle of selling an item or two for a few bucks instead of taking it to a charity. For one thing, I would never let a stranger into my house. Secondly I would not want to be kept waiting and waiting for the buyer to show up..

What really bothers me is the people who sell items for way more than they are worth. Recently, someone wanted $500 for a 10 year old 50 inch plasma tv. The Salvation Army won't even accept tvs that are more than 5 years old. Also, furniture is often priced for more half what someone paid for it years ago. If you are selling something, price it reasonably.

It's apparent that an agreement to pay isn't worth anything to this seller.

Unless you had a handshake, there was no agreement. Technology has changed how we interact, the price we pay for convenience.

Again, the guy has probably already been stiffed and he doesn’t know you. We know longer live in a world where if someone looks and talks like us can we trust them, which I do remember perceiving the world as a child and held onto that notion for quite some time. I’ve been burned by a Villager who was a lot less than honest on a fairly large purchase. My ignorance in not knowing what to look for made me feel like a chump. Everyone screws up now and then. Chalk it up as a learning experience and move on.

This is very true but unfortunately a fact of life and you just have to suck it up and deal with it. Just move on. This should be the worst thing that ever happens in your life.
You see lack of honesty and integrity everywhere in our society these days from the bottom to the top.

Not good, definitely a Bummer but you know as I do that when stupid things like this happen that the next opportunity is much better. Not many people are from the old school anymore. Don't change because of this Fugazi Deal. I'm glad that people like you still think your word means something,:cold: because it does.

Perhaps you should post post exactly what happened in a case such as this and also post the person's name.
They would deserve it!

Honesty and integrity of sellers has been mentioned in this thread.
If the seller seems to lack in these qualities, what is wrong with mentioning their name?

Because the honesty and integrity of the seller has been challenged by only one person.
Besides, the seller as far as I know is not running a licensed business. Just your run of the
mill schmo selling used stuff on the internet.

Anyone who gives a deposit to a seller is nuts!
By law, a deposit must go into an escrow account. If the seller has an agent, the deposit goes into the broker's escrow account.
If the seller is a FSBO (For Sale By Owner), the buyer should have the deposit placed in an escrow account with a title company or attorney.

Have Sold many items in my lifetime. Rule of Thumb I use; Cash and Carry IMM....Otherwise, I will tell you that item is still available to the first person who has cash and will take away IMM. Will never tell someone I am selling to them at a later date of their convenience. True buyers always come first!

We went to look at a car first guy got there before us, said he would buy, but no deposit. We had cash in hand, but seller said gave his word. Three days later seller contacted us first guy never came back. We already bought a different car. Seller yelled at us for not waiting on a car he said was sold.:rant-rave:
Cash in hand takes care of it.

Yes, we are sure about this in the context of the discussion. The original poster was talking about purchasing a used item from this site's for sale section, NOT real estate. If you don't want to give a cash deposit, then be prepared to have all the cash in hand to purchase. Again, I am not referring to the purchase of real estate.

The seller has no obligation to hold something for buyer with no contract and hold forfeit money. I sold lots of stuff and just cause somebody says they want it don't mean they are committed. I always told somebody you x number hours to get or the next guy that want it gets it from lessons learn when dealing with tele callers. Even then, there no garrentee it will be there when you arrive.
I once found garden tractor with all attachment. Told the guy I would give what he was asking and it would take me 1 and half hours to get due to the bank wasn't open yet. Long story short I got the money drove the hour and when I got there within the hour and half time limit. He sold it and I seen the guy driving away with it for less money.:crap2:
I asked him why he didn't wait for full price time he allowed me to get there. He said the guy had cash and no garrentee I was going to show up. This was back before cell phone and internet. I was alway gave the buyer time limit to get it. But 1 minute after the limit it was up for sale to first buyer with cash. I was ****ed, but nothing I could do except drive home with no tail between my legs.
Today with Craiglist you got to be fast or you loose out.
