I only know how to ride an old fashion bike like we all had as kids. Does anyone know where I can learn how to ride a 10 speed?

The absence of hills means you really don't need many gears, so a bike with just one gear-changer might be a better option for you

Also, the bike clubs have several groups of differing speeds and abilities, so you don't need a "racing" bike to join them

And don't forget the recumbent and tandem options, too

Happy cycling!

Good advice. When I want to learn something new I use one of the computer search engines, there is some amazing stuff online and it covers just about everything you need to get through life!

Most people teach themselves. There is, as suggested by others, many good videos explaining the different types of shifters and why quality bikes might have lower and higher gears than a department store grade of bike.

As to rules-you should not, you actually cannot shift unless you are peddling. You can actually break the cable or the shifters by forcing it while you are not peddling. If, it is an older 10 speed it might not have indexing shifters, You can, on that system place the lever so that you are sort of between gears. That puts a lot wear on the system. You will feel the grinding.
You need to move the lever a little bit more till the grinding stops

I am being very serious:smiley: - if I don't know how to do something I get into Ask.com - What's Your Question? (http://www.ask.com) and learn how to do it. What did we do before the computer?

So you have 10 speed? They will have hand brakes, IMO disk brakes are the best over clamp type. But depends on quality (cost) of the bike. This is also something you have to get use to. Also bike with more than 5 gears will have duel shifter's. On for the front sprocket you are peddling and one for the rear sprocket. Some of these can be confusing and uncomfortable for use with age and not bike rider for years due to the seat and position of the handle bars. Also the size of the wheels and frame should fit you body size. If you just want to get some exercise one speed coaster bike will do the are easy to peddle and glide really good and you will be Use to the peddle braking. If you want to bike miles and miles at 20 plus mph then geared bike may be better. Basically it has to fix you exercise program and what you want to get out of it.
