We don't live in the Villages yet but I like to look at the recommendations and complaints about the contractors and service providers so when we do get there I'll have an idea who the reputable companies are.

I notice a lot of the recommendations are from people who have only one post. Are these posts legitimate? Do the contractors give these people an incentive to post? Do the contractors create user accounts so they can recommend themselves? Are the contractors just so good that people feel compelled to sign up on TOTV just to recommend them?

Maybe I'm just being cynical? lol

There are many contractors that have their employees, family members etc post praises on here. Check with seniors against crime before you hire an unknown. When interviewing a potential contractor ask for their list of customers, then contact them randomly to see how they performed. Safest bet is to use contractors the developer uses, T&D, Scott Plumbing etc. Ask your neighbors who they use. The lowest price isn't always the best option but many contractors lead with that then disappear. We all have our favorites but be careful when you get info on here, your due diligence should make your choice.

In this day and age, cynicism is probably a valuable trait. However when I need a recommendation (and in the past 2 years since we've lived here, we've gotten many), i search this site. Invariably I will see recommendations from people I trust. Who/why do I trust them? Well just from reading the posts, one learns who to trust, who is respected, etc etc. And these are people with a long history on TOTV -- both in terms of time and number/quality of posts.

I agree with you though, I too would be skeptical if a contractor recommendation was the only post the person made.

Before you contact or contract with a vendor call Seniors vs Crime and ask them if they have received complaints and if so how were they settled! Good number is (350)750-1914.

The above recommendations plus click on the person who is supplying the referral or complaint and look at their previous posts. You'll get an idea of how that person thinks or you may find they only post for or against a particular business.
