Consumer Cellular Phones

Hi All, has any one had dealings with Consumer Cellular Phones? If so please share your thoughts with me. We have Sprint but we are thinking about changing. Happy Thanksgiving!!

We switched to ConsumerCellular 2 months ago because we never used the 450 shared minutes with our two lines from AT&T and our contract had expired. Each month we had 300 plus rollover minutes expire. Because we had so many AT&T minutes we used the cell phones for all of our long distance calls and tried to enjoy contact with family with the less than great built in speaker.We now have 250 minutes (no rollovers) and none of the other deals we had with AT&T regarding calls to other AT&T customers. So far we have had no problems with service (they use the AT&T network). There is no contract and our free Motorola phones are okay but have fewer features which we weren't using anyway (camera, internet access, texting) Our bill went from over $60/month to less than $40 (incl tax) for two lines
We could not use our old Samsung Cell phones as Consumer cellular only uses Motorola phones.

Coincident with our change to Consumer Cellular we also switched our home phone service from Embarq to Comcast. Kept same number and saved quite a bit of money. We now use Comcast unlimited Long Distance for calls to family and enjoy the better quality with the speakers on our home phones and can stay on as long as we want with no concern about minutes or dropped calls.

So if you are not heavy uses of cell phone and don't require all the other features, Consumer cellular is a good lower cost alternative for basic service.

They do have other plans with more minutes and features and they also provide a better featured Motorola phone for a higher one time price.I have a friend who also switched but he already had a Motorola Phone with lots of features that he was able to use with Consumer Cellular. They just charged him the same $35 activation fee and sent him a new SIM card.


Bottom line Consumer Cellular is great for the light user who only uses phone for infrequent calls and does not need all of the other features. Also no contract to lock you in with early termination fees.

We started with consumer Cellular a month ago, 2 phones, shared minutes. We used the phones on the trip from Cape Cod to the Villages, car to truck and we have used the phones here for past week both locally and long distance with absolutely no problem. As cell phone newbies we love them. We opted for the Nokia..a few bucks more but more senior friendly.Hope that helps.
