German cockroaches.....

Been in TV for six years and have lived in two homes both new. Recently we have seen a few of the very fast, small, German cockroaches in the kitchen. I found one entry point behind a light switch on the kitchen bar and another behind the fridge. I have treated both and sealed. Still see infants. Deans wants $140 to treat and a monthly amount but I have been able in the past to simply use the stuff you buy at Home Depot and have no problems. Any suggestions?

Home defense spray works for me. Spray a 2 inch border around the perimeter, and when they cross it, they will die.

That is one bug that I wouldn't ask the cost to get rid of, different from the big Florida Palmetto bugs which I don't like either.

Those kind of bugs make my skin crawl and I would spare no expense to get the most effective way to get rid of them immediately.

The German cockroaches are the hardest to get rid of. Check into a one-time treatment with a three-month guaranty (no charge for coming back if another roach is spotted in that period). I know Both Masse’s and Dean’s both had this option. Hopefully, this still exists.

I’m with Gracie. I would get the pros to take of them. Just too hard to get rid of.

Home defense spray is great and safe, never had a bug that it didn't take care of. Give it a shot so to speak.

The problem is they laid eggs, you may kill the ones you see but in few day the eggs will hatch. This why the first treatment usually don't work. The only do it your self treatment would be bug bombs providing you have no open gas pilot lights (read the instructions on the can). Bug bombs will kill anything that breath air silverfish, spiders, roaches, flies, mice, rats, lizards, ect...Set them off in house, garage and the attic it kills everything. Depending on how big your house is could take 6 to twelve to cover the hole house. If you don't want to fool with that then get bug guy that garrentee he will kill them. As mentioned 3 month garrentee should take care of them.

I agree with Gracie!! When we first moved here (Imwas here alone until my husband was able to retire, about 6 month) the villa was infested with “palmettos”.... AKA..ugly huge cockroaches! I was on the phone every other day with Massey. He did tell me it would probably take 3 months to get completely rid of them. He got rid of them sooner! Love Massey!

Don't waste your time with sprays or dusts, and don't feel you need to spend big money on professional services in order to kill off German Roaches. (Remember that in my youth I was an Orkin man.)

When I was a pest control professional German Roaches were a special problem and could not be controlled by the sprays that we used for other pests. The spray that we used to control German Roaches is no longer available to the public.

Here is what works: RAID Roach Gel (syringe dispenser) or Combat Max Gel (syringe dispenser.) One or the other can be found at Home Depot or Office Max.

You simply apply a bit of the gel in several locations around the infested area, usually the kitchen, and the roaches are attracted to the gel, which they walk through and ingest.

Read and follow the instructions carefully. Do not apply the gel where children or pets can reach it. Do not apply it where spray poison has been applied, and do not spray poison over the gel where applied.

Quite simply, it works! I wouldn't use anything else for control of a German Roach problem. Of course it kills other roaches too.

The palmetto bug is huge, dark glossy brown and can be shot and killed with a BB gun, which my husband once did in Texas. The German cockroach is small and skittish and a lot of them come home from the from the supermarket with the groceries. I don't know about any other kinds of roaches and I hope I never do!

I love Massey too (for so many reasons) almost as much as Gracie Loves the Morses. LOL Seriously, I have annual contracts with Massey for irrigation, landscaping and pest control. I cannot sing their praises enough.

However --- when it comes to extermination, my philosophy is keep the exterminator and give me a carpenter! I think the secret is to constantly SEAL, SEAL, SEAL all the cracks, crevices and other points of entry. Although the bugs can get through the smallest spaces, they can not pass through matter. So start with keeping them out. Then the exterminating will probably be limited to the occasional stray (or its egg) who may have come in with a box or something. Or the bugger who slipped in under your garage door, etc, etc. And don't forget to spray your perimeter whenever you or your neighbors have the palms pruned since the bugs have been known to inhabit the leaves.

It is a battle but we can win the war! I learned this when, as a young woman I lived in a 60-unit apartment building in New York City 59 apartments were overrun with roaches and 1 (mine) was roach free. I sealed that apartment so well that although I refused the services of the monthly exterminator that the building provided, I lived roach free for years at a time.

When I moved out of OKC to county on hails two acres the house was infested with brown recluse spiders. The older people that lived there was almost blind I was very surprised they didn't get bit? The spiders were everywhere. In the attic, under the everything behind beds, under the sinks. Bug bombing wiped them out. The problem with wondering spider same for cockroaches they hid during the day and wonder at night. The spiders would come down for the attic, so I had to bug bomb the attic. Took three sections to wipe them out and any eggs that hatched Bug bombing is the same as the house in bag gassing. It kills anything that breath air. Cost me about 100 bucks for the three gassing and yard treatment.

I'm with graciegirl on this one! We got an infestation of Germans when we got new kichen appliaces. As I had never seen those before I naturally looked them up. The information I got online was this type of infestation required professional treatment. It took 2 treatments before the little buggers were gone!

The Combat Max gel includes a diagram of the recommended locations where to apply the gel. Mainly they suggest putting it in cracks and crevices, like between the stove and the adjacent cabinet.

They do not recommend putting gel inside switch plates or other electrical connections. I think they are concerned about liability issues if they make such a recommendation, but it is also not necessary. The insects who walk through or eat the gel take some of it back to the nest, which is soon destroyed.

There is something about the gel as food that attracts the roaches.

Remember: no applications of the gel where small children or pets can get to it.

I'll say it again: there is nothing better for killing German Roaches.

They don't worry much about roaches/palmetto bugs in Australia. (Why... WHY???) They don't worry much about screens either (or air conditioning, but that's another story...)

I'm sitting with my son in the TV room of their house in the AM before work, the TV is on, and the cat is going crazy. The TV is on a bookshelf. I ask what's up with the cat, and David says There's a roach beside the TV on the shelf.

So I look, and the sucker is three inches long. I freak. David says What do you want me to do, and I say, SCOOP IT UP and throw it out the damn window that has no SCREENS!!!!!

I lived in Georgia for five years. Roaches make my skin crawl. Massey is my first line of defense. I don't trust myself to get the right spots with anything from Home
Depot. Plus we have pets.

Why a tropical country eschews window screens (not to mention air conditioning) is beyond me. But I digress.

Boractin Insecticide Powder is the only thing that I have found that kills ALL roaches. Just dust all your walls through your wall switch plates. In your homes walls is where these "little Bastards" live. Safe as it is Organic.

If you see 1 German roach there are 100. They are brutal to get rid of. I recommend going to “do it yourself pest control” in Maitland, Florida (about an hour drive towards orlando). I had ceramic tile laid when I move in, german roaches were in the boxes and my house was infested. Was able to get rid of them myself with products from do it yourself. Other option is to get Massey and pay the fee. I am a Native Floridian, German roaches scare me to death as they multiply expotentlially.

Some of it is still here.... I still have them do outside pest contol it was great to have them when there were roof rats running around. We were in Colorado but they came out and placed the bait box. When we arrived there were severa dead rats around. Over the summer there were reports of the White Footed ants around...they came out to bait for that.

The only critters we had in Colorado Springs were field mice now those are really hard to get rid of. Bet thats a long funny story!

Check around, under sinks, behind refrigerator, any open spot in any wall. Use the foam in can to fill it or putty or caulking. Well, this is just a guess and may be wrong.

I think they may come in from the sewer and into the sink drain plumbing. Reason for this, the "young uns" have shown up in and around sinks at night and in the shower if you can believe it. We have had about 6+ in two years. Hard to catch, well, we use the small vacuum with the hose and the crevice tool one person starts the vacuum and the other gets them out of the hiding place, it works good and the vacuum tube ride is a dead end. And, another item, when we go for awhile, I put bleach in the sinks and in the shower drain, about 1/4 cup and it does seem to work. Be sure to put the plug or stopper in the Disposal and the sinks. It has helped a lot.

Just the word "cockroach" gives me the shivers! You've mentioned home defense spray - is this a product one can purchase at Ace Hardware, or anyplace else? My wife and I are snowbirds, and when we came back in October, the house was inundated with the large, Palmetto variety. We eventually eliminated the problem, but if there is a spray that we can use before we leave that would offer a bit of protection, that would be helpful. We have a pest control company that supposedly looked after the place, but they still got in.

Your treatment to Electric outlets will have no effect German roaches like dark damp near a food source they’re not bugs are coming from the outside more than likely they were brought home and some sort of a corrugated paper products from some sort of a food mart.
I would recommend hiring a professional with a one time treatment 90 day guarantee or A one time treatment with a one follow-up visit.
The German cockroach breed at an alarming rate the longer you wait the worse the infestation home treatment usually scatters the infestation does not remove it and now you’ve just placed dangerous chemicals within your living environment. I speak from experience I owned three extermination company’s when I lived up north.

Wow, $140. to treat for cockroaches. If it were me I would be doing what you bought at Home Depot, if you don't mind doing the work to put it down, but I'm sure it's not real tough. I guess I do everything myself because if I bought from every fix up person that came to my door & how many vendors & private contractors I see running up & down my street I would be out of money in the first yr. TV is a great place to live but it's expensive to live here & fight off all the vultures that say you have a problem with something. But you're right you don't want cockroaches. I say do your home treatments first before some vendor convinces you that they're the only ones that can get rid of them. Good luck!

We use Heron every three months for about $100. We still get a few roaches (Palmetto bugs), but not very many.

I first spotted this pest (the smaller brown ones) on lanai. Then noticed one inside the garage about two weeks later. Went to Ace, they recommended Home Defense Max. I shy away from chemicals, use only organics on lawn, flowers, etc. but used the Home Defense as they recommended (I explained I do not spray chemicals inside the house), so sprayed around the entire foundation, then the "joint" where pavers meet the concrete garage floor when door is up, at all entrance doors front and back, and never saw another bug of any kind. That was three years ago, now do the same one time only each spring, never have had any pests since. Don't like the idea of chemicals, but sure is effective for about $8 !

Definitely spray with Home Defense Max before you leave ! It definitely works ! Around entire foundation, all entrance door joints including the garage door where it meets garage floor, lanai where floor meets house, etc. It is an awesome product, very reasonably priced too !
