View Full Version : The Tea Plantation: NOT Just for Ladies Who Lunch

We recently returned from a visit to TV where we ate out way too often. But calories do not count when you are not at home...right?

One of the places I really liked is The Tea Plantation, located at LSL. Not a chain restaurant. The Tea Plantation is a place with somebody in the kitchen actually cooking. Wonderful soups and quiche and certainly a far more varied menu than you might expect from a place with the word ‘tea’ in its name.

The first time I went there, it was as a lady who lunches, and it was so good that I dragged Mr. Boomer with me for the next visit. Actually two more. The second time, he did not have to be dragged.

I think the word ‘tea’ maybe scared Mr. B. the first time because Mr. B. is serious about his food. I think he was worried that he might be forced to eat finger sandwiches and would surely starve. But that was not the case, at all. Mr. Boomer was as happy as could be with a huge plate of bangers and mash. The sausage was wonderful. (I tasted it, even though I was having the quiche of the day.) And I think the mashed potatoes may have actually been real ones. The kind of potatoes that tasted like they had entered the kitchen with their peelings still intact. You remember real mashed potatoes, don’t you? I am pretty sure these were the real thing. Bangers and mash, served with peas. Mr. Boomer was a happy man.

And then there was dessert. A dessert that I refused to share. Queen Pudding. Wonderful, wonderful lemon stuff. Just tart enough. Absolutely perfect. Not like those cloyingly sweet concoctions that too many restaurants serve. Queen Pudding was made with a delicate touch. No heavy-handed sugaring. Just the right amount of sweet to balance the lemon.

And the hostess told us that they are having entertainment now on some nights, but we did not get there for that. (Oh, and btw, possibly the cleanest restroom in town. Everybody gets their own freshly laundered little hand towel – at least in the ladies’ room.)

So guys, don’t pay any attention to the purses and hats and flowers in the corner. And just pretend that you do not see when the woman who is with you picks up the cup and looks at the bottom to see if the china is from England. (It is.) And have yourself a wonderful lunch or dinner at the Tea Plantation which is definitely not just for ladies who lunch.

Sounds great Boomer. Bangers? ohhhhhhhh one of my favs; love 'em and they are so difficult to find here in the US of A. Was just telling hub Bill that we must try this restaurant. Bill does all the cooking and likes a break once in awhile (in fact, quite often) from slaving over the hot stove. <grin> Anyway, thanks for the tip and so sorry that we missed your visit here in TV. .....barb

Boomer glad you got to try this hidden gem during your visit. We have eaten there many times and have never had a bad meal. Have even stopped in just to have a fresh home made desert. Service is always excellent. The Friday night entertainment is one of our favorites in TV. Recently they announced a Murder Mystery dinner and it sold out so quickly that they arranged with the actors to do another show next Saturday night, which also quickly sold out.

Oh, Boomer;

I don't know whether to applaud your comments or chastise you for giving away one of the little treasures this particular male foody enjoys here in The Villages. I've had the pleasure of dining at The Tea Plantation several times. The service and quality of the food has always been excellent. It's quiet and very pleasant for a late lunch, or early tea if you prefer.

Now I'll have to share it. Oh well, I know TOTVers will be happier for the experience.

Went to dinner at the Plantation Tea Room last friday night, and the dinner(s) served were a mixed result. As far as main dinner entrees, The Crab cakes were very good, but the roast beef was tough and the crusted baked salmon was so so at best. When the tough Roast beef was brought to the managers attention, they did very graciously offer any other fare on the menu as a replacement but since the other diners were already eating, she (the diner) said no. The Manager, after further consulting with the chef, then agreed and refunded the cost of the order. All were pleased with the outcome! Others at our table had "English" fare which is a staple at this resturant.

The Bright spot about Friday night was the Entertainment. "PETRINA" was just outstanding and she is not only a singer but truly an entertainer. When it came time for a break, she had 2 other singers that offered a different type of music and it was a pleasent treat.

Another good feature about this resturant is that you were never rushed out and once you finished dinner you could stay and simply enjoy conversation or listen to the entertainment.

Had dinner at the Tea Plantation Friday night.

The entertainer was Dawn Dinome, probably one of the best, most professional entertainers in the villages. She put on a very fun show and her show tunes are performed with all the enthusiasm and excellence of a Broadway entertainer.

In my opinion, this restaurant is a class act. The food is sensational, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is very charming and the management is extremely gracious and professional. We were with a large party and there was some mix up with the meals, but the management, without our asking, offered us free meals because of the mix up. I, personally, felt so badly because the food was so good, that I payed for mine anyway but complemented the owner for being so concerned for our satisfaction.

I highly recommend this restaurant as a special place to go for a special event or for just a fun night out. It is not just for ladies to lunch out.

The owners of the Tea Plantation are really sweet people, and if you hadn't already guessed it, they are from England. Which is why the recipes for the "English" fare are so authentic.

784caroline - If you saw Petrina perform on March 5th, I was one of the guest singers that night.

KathieI- I will be doing a guest sing with Dawn Dinome on April 23rd at the Tea Plantation, and I will have my own show on April 30th. I don't know who will do a guest spot yet during my show.

Hey Sue,

I bumped this old thread to check in to see if you are all ready for 4/30. You can bet that if I were in TV right now, I would already have a reservation for a front row seat. I am looking forward to hearing you sing someday.

Anyway, Sue, I know you will be wonderful. (I was going to say, "Break a leg," but then I decided that I do not know if it is OK to say that to singers or if it is just for theater stuff and so I thought I had better not say, "Break a leg," just in case.....but if it is OK for me to say, "Break a leg," well, "Break a leg." But if not, just pretend I did not say that part.)

Hey Boomer - I am almost ready. I think I have enough songs memorized to fill the three hours now, but I panicked yesterday and decided to make myself some cheat sheets of the lyrics. (just in case I have a brain fart, or something!) So I was frantically downloading lyrics on my computer and printing them off last night until around one o'clock in the morning. I now have them neatly in sheet protectors and in a binder so I can take a quick glance if I need to! Now tonight I'm going to time each set so I know I have enough material, and decide what order I'm going to do the songs. Then I have to put my cheat sheets in order so I can find them. (what good is having a cheat sheet if you can't find the answers when the test arrives, right?) I'm saving tomorrow night to ponder that ever elusive answer to the timeless question: "what should I wear?" Do you think one night will be enough time to find that answer???!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! SS! I just finished writing a post in that "Glee" thread about how I almost always know all the lyrics, even though I cannot sing -- except for in my dreams. Ohhhhh, I could sit in the front row and be your prompter. Darn it! I am still in Cincinnati.

A true story...

Mr. B. and I have been to Colorado and back during the past week. We drove. Aaaauuugh!!!! Sometimes I sing to Mr. Boomer while he is driving. (talk about a captive audience -- on I-70)

Anyway, yesterday we were coming through St. Louis and when we were passing by the arch, I burst into song. First, of course, it was the "St. Louie Blues" followed by "You Came a Long Way from St. Louie."

Well, Mr. B. knew the first song, but he said, "You are making that one up." -- about the second one. I said I was not.

As fortune would have it, I was in possession of my trusty laptap and so I went to You Tube and proved that I was not making that song up. I love both those songs. I want to be a torch singer. But I cannot sing and I think my slinky dress days are all behind me. (sigh) (sigh) But I remember lyrics.

Here is the link I used to convince Mr. Boomer that I did not make that song up.

Boomer, now that's weird! Whenever anything even remontely reminds me of a tune, I break into song too. (I can't sing either.) That's not what's weird though.

What's weird is that one night I started singing this really obscure song called, "The Night Chicago Died". To be honest, I don't even remember where I had ever heard it or why I started singing it.

At any rate, my husband swore up and down there was no such song and that I was making it up. Isn't that funny. It was even about a city, like yours. Actually, it's a story song about Al Capone. It's not a good song, like that lovely "You Came a Long Way from St. Louie." But it has a catchy beat that apparently stuck somewhere in the depths of my memory and bubbled to the surface some 30 years later for no apparent reason.

Anyway, like you, I went to YouTube to find it to prove to DH that it wasn't a figment of my imagination. Fair warning. It ain't too good.

Pt, it is weird.

I must confess that the lyrics I know are almost all from before 1980. And a lot of them are from before I was born. I pathetically wish "Name That Tune" was not a thing of the distant past of television. (I used to shout our the answers from the couch. But (sigh) nobody in California could hear me winning the $100,000 in cash and prizes, no matter how loud I yelled the name of that tune.)

A while back, there was rumor around these parts that there is somewhere in TV where people play "Name That Tune." But I never found out for sure. I think it was just a dream.

After I wrote that earlier post, Mr. Boomer took me out to dinner. When we were leaving the restaurant. I saw the most beautiful car. A CL550 Coupe. Oh my gosh! I was in luv. I peeked in the windows. My luv grew deeper. It was the most beautiful car I have seen in a long, long time.

Then I came home and looked up the price. $110,000. So I guess I will just have to get over my new love. Never love anything that can't love you back. Right?

But...I bet you can guess what song has been going through my head since. (And that is a tough one to get out. And I know it's kind of bad.)

Would it be "Little Deuce Coupe"? I actually recognized "The night chicago died", but your St. Louis song was just a little too obscure. I would have been with Mr. Boomer on that one, thinking that you had made it up.

I'm usually really good with lyrics too, and I know I will probably not even need the cheat sheets! Like I said, it was a panic mode thing!!

You are welcome to come and be my prompter when you are back in town. But I will warn you.....I have very ecclectic taste in music. My first set is pop, my second set is country and my final set is broadway. (of course, when I sing at the Havana CC I will skip the broadway and do more pop and country, 'cause everyone just wants to dance!) :pepper2:

Hey -- all good. I absolutely love country music It always tells a story. I have heard that country songs are often written after somebody says something that just gets it all started. I actually have, sort of, written two country songs in my head. Well....really all I have are a few lyrics.....very few....ohhhhh, but wait......I can't write music. Gotta find me a collaborator I guess....or, at least, gotta get me an actual attention span and finish those lyrics.

You both sound like naturals to try out for "The Singing Bee" on CMT. Melissa Peterman (from REBA show) hosts a karoke style show that is all about knowing the lyrics to the songs. The music is mostly country, but not always. It is a fast moving hour long show if you haven't seen it. It is on Friday nights, but I generally DVR it and watch at a more convenient time. My wife and I really enojoy it and if you DVR you can get some of the older re-runs too.:MOJE_whot:

I've been to at least two "social" events where the entertainment of the evening was "Name That Tune!" If I recall correctly, there was a couple equipped with some sort of amazing player, so they could even take requests. And, one party was the St. Louis Club, so several St. Louis-oriented songs were obviously played. ("Meet Me in . . ." of course).

Sorry I can't identify the twosome, but both parties were fun! A huge challenge for me, though, as I grew up in and kept a purely classical music household; my exposure to the popular music of whatever day was and remains minimal!

Maybe The Mayor will be able to find out for us. She knows so much about TV already!

Hi SWR,

That sounds wonderful! My kind of party!

And how could I forget about "Meet Me in St. Louie, Louie."

I must tell a story sometime about when a friend of mine and I got started on songs with geography in the title. It all started with "Mention My Name In Sheboygan." And we kept putting Sheboygan in place of all the other locations. It went on for months....."I Love Sheboygan in the Springtime" and "Way Down Yonder in Sheboygan" and "My Kind of Town, Sheboygan is My Kind of Town"....on and on it went.

I know that Sheboygan is not in MO though so back to St. Louis. There is nothing like those old "St. Louie Blues."

...."If it weren't for all that powder....and that store-bought hair" (Muted trumpet wail)....

Oh, you know what I mean.

Uh oh, I just wrote that post and duplicated your "I Left My Heart in Sheboygan." I should not read so fast. Now, I must think of a substitute...."Sheboygan Lassie" -- down in F. L. A...."Back Home Again in Sheboygan"...."My Old Sheboygan Home"...

And then I saw that post you wrote about the car song....ah, you must be a youngun. I signed my name Boomer Pearl. That was a hint. And I said the song was kinda bad. Makes me feel guilty when I sing it. I think my Sunday School teacher will hear me. I hope not being able to figure out what I am talking about does not drive you to drink Southern Comfort. Oh this is just awful. I have no business posting after midnight. Here I am in Ohio with my brain still on Colorado time like it was last week and the beginning of this week -- convenient that was because I was actually in Colorado......

Now, here I sit, in Ohio, up way too late. Thinking of songs with geography in the title, a city, a state, whatever, so I can stick Sheboygan into the location part. It is way too late. I am not a nocturnal creature. Not normally. Can't stop thinking about those song titles.....Thinking...."Hard-Hearted Hannah, the Vamp of Sheboygan"....ohhhh, this is nuts. Actually. it is quite pathetic. I started this whole Sheboygan thing and now I cannot make it stop....."Sheboygan, Sheboygan, That Toddlin' Town".....Serves me right I guess. I started it.

Maybe if I tell Pt what the car song is that the CL550 Coupe put into my brain, I will be able to stop thinking of song titles I can use Sheboygan in....OK....the car song?...It was Janis Joplin's "Mercedes-Benz." (What was this thread about again?)

Goodnight....and I am not going to turn on this computer in the morning. Really...."I'm Walkin' to Sheboygan."...."I Found My Thrill On Sheboygan Hill"..... (Did I tell you that I just love the word 'Sheboygan'? Really. I do.)

And now I am trying to do both. Maybe Marty Robbins,
"Out in the West Texas town of Sheboygan, I fell in love with a CL550"
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and the CL550 would whirl.

Blacker than night were the lights of Mercedez,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this little black dream car;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.

OR

To the town of Sheboygan rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business no one dared to make a slip
for the stranger there among them had a CL550 and it fit

And now I am trying to do both. Maybe Marty Robbins,
"Out in the West Texas town of Sheboygan, I fell in love with a CL550"
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and the CL550 would whirl.

Blacker than night were the lights of Mercedez,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this little black dream car;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.

I know. I know. Last night in this thread, at almost 2:00 AM (so unlike me - that wee hours time) anyway, I swore, in writing, that I would not log on this morning. But I just had to sit down here at the computer to go through my usual coffee and Cheerios routine, and I looked in. And now....

wellllll.....now I have seen I2ridehd's song, and so I just had to log on to tell him that it is a wonderful song.

I2, I have been singing your song. It works. Of course, I am sure you have sung it, too. And, therefore, you know that at the end of that first line, we get to sing "a CL Five-Five (really fast on the Five Five) Oh-Ohhhhhhh-Oh-oh-ohhh. It works perfectly like that. It is quite wonderful actually. -- can sing those Oh's in a really dramatic way, and sound so sad. I can embrace the unrequited love by singing all those Oh's. Ahhhh, the wonders of music therapy.

....Darn it. Now, I am thinking about that car again. How did you know it was black? I have been to the Mercedes website. I have played around with all the interior colors. Mr. Boomer keeps looking hopefully over my shoulder.....It ain't gonna happen. Yeah. I can just see it now. Boomer the now oh-so-conservative investor taps the retirement account for a car....yeah....right. Nobody is ever going to gainfully employ us again. Nor do we want that to happen. So we will just stick with my Accord and his old white DTS. (The Boomermobile) -- I am such a sensible girl. Gets a little tedious sometimes. So I do not want that car...thaaaaaat bad. I can admire it. But I also know myself. But that thing sure is purdy and it looked like it was going fast even when it was sitting still. (Darn it. I used to look like that. So long ago.)

Well, anyway, here I am....was not going to be on this computer this morning. And I am going to get out of here right now, but.......that Sheboygan thing is back in my brain, too, and how could I have forgotten "Why-O Why-O Why-O Did I Ever Leave....Sheboygan?"

Ah yes the black Mercedez. I bought mrs L2 a certified pre-owned black E350 for her b-day and v-day this year. Beautiful car with all the bells and whitles. I have a silver one for a company car so I know how well they ride, handle, and all the great features they have. Not new, but a 2007 with only 12,000 miles and cost less then a new Accord so somehow was able to justify it. The CL550 will have to wait until I win the lottery. And I have a very long list if that ever happens. But I digress.

Back to the music. Maybe Janis was from Sheboygan?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a night on the town ?
I'm from Shoboygan so don't let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, ain't Shoboygan such a great town ?

And we can never forget

I'm going to Sheboygan
Sheboygan here I come
I'm going to Sheboygan
Sheboygan here I come
There is a crazy little Mercedez there
And I'm gonna get me one

I'm gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
I'm gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
With my little Sheboygan baby
And a bottle of Sheboygan wine

Riding on the City of Sheboygan,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen SL550's and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Sheboygan -- eeee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

(That's a hint, too.) Aw, c'mon, Pt. You gotta know this one.

Boomer McGee

Ok, it's Mercedes Benz. Funny thing is, I was actually thinking of this song when I wrote Mockingbird. It was just a late night brain fart. BTW, I LOVE Janis Joplin.

Really. I do.)

Boomer, Face Down in the Stream of Consciousness Tonight

Yes Boomer, I think they are just going to come and cart us off. I just responded with the name of the song and now I read that you told me the song and now I look like I've lost my marbles. I probably left them in a hotel room in Sheboygan. :o

BTW,
If You are Going to Sheboygan
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.

I haven't read the posts past this one of yours that I'm quoting and I'm praying no one else already told you what to wear in your hair if you're going to Sheboygan.

Some folks like to get away
Take a holiday from the neighbourhood
Hop a flight to The Villages
Or to Colorodo woods
But I'm taking an SL550
On the long and speedy ride
I'm in a Sheboygan state of mind

I've seen all the movie stars
In their SL550s and limousines
Been high in Ohio under the evergreens
But I know what I'm needing
And I don't want to waste more time
I'm in a Sheboygan state of mind

It was so easy living day by day
No SL550s or HUGE Refrigorators
But now I need a little give and take
The Financials Times, The Kiplinger News

It comes down to reality
And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide
Don't care if it's Cinnci or the countryside
I don't have any reasons
I've left them all behind
I'm in a Sheboygan state of mind

I'm just taking a Mercedes on a long and speedy ride
'Cause I'm in a Sheboygan state of mind

Uh oh. It looks like Pt and I2 have caught the Sheboygan Fever, too. Oh my! I must warn you. It can be really, really difficult to stop.......I have been trying, but guess what......

"On Sheboygan! On Sheboygan!
Fight on for her fame"........

(You know what....something about that one kind of works. Don't you think maybe?)

And, Mr. Tony, Mr. Admin, Sir, thankyouverymuch. NOT. Now you have caused that "They're Coming to Take Me Away" song (sort of a song anyway) to be stuck in my mind, right there alongside Sheboygan.
