Florida to Crackdown on Golf Carts With State Issued Plates
According to a spokesperson at the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles, the state will soon begin issuing traffic citations to drivers of golf carts displaying state license plates unless the golf carts are actually registered as Low Speed Vehicles and the plate has been legally issued to the owner specifically for that golf cart.
Public Affairs Officer Lt April Phurzt announced the new policy at a press conference on Friday. Phurzt explained that many golf cart owners display plates on their golf carts that were originally on automobiles in their previous states of residence. This practice results in the implication that the golf carts are “street legal” when in fact they are not. Citations issued are expected to require the offending golf cart owners to appear in court and fines are expected to be in excess of $250.00 plus court costs.
