My wife and I recently had the occasion to have wonderful lunch with another couple @ The Tavern. The restaurant had filed for bankruptcy back in early summer and looked like they would be shutting down but thankfully, they have attracted some new investors and are emerging stronger than ever. Their quality of food and service was up to their great reputation and for a Tuesday, they had lots of lunch customers. I would hate to see this fine old institution close. What a beautiful location and spectacular setting. And Yes, the Gorilla is still there.

MMC24, I hate to disappoint you, but the Tavern on the Green as we know it is going out of business and most of its possessions, including the famous artwork and chandeliers, go on the auction block starting on January 13. There is a "ravenous pack of more than 450 creditors" fighting for the proceeds, which is explained in a New York Times article in today's paper (see link). The lease for the building has been taken by the landlord (the New York City Parks Dept.) and a new owner will be coming in to re-open the restaurant sometime in 2010. I understand that it will keep the name, but I don't see how it can ever be the same as the original. I haven't been at the Tavern in some years, but I always loved it and considererd it one of my favorite restaurants in NYC.

What a shame! It is like a breath of spring in the middle of winter.
Here is the lastest on Tavern on the Green:

MMC24 - I agree with you about the ambiance and food - just great. Sure hate to see the original go because it was one of our favs in NYC. We also enjoyed The Russian Tea Room but alas......
