What's up with the restaurant at Cane Garden charging .60 cents extra for crispy bacon on the breakfast menu? Never heard of such a thing.

60 cents--time to go to Denny's or Bob Evans--this is why we will never have excellent restaurants in TV

Lol. Takes extra time to cook. Gotta pay the cook for his overtime. [emoji12]
Did you ask them why?

I don't understand. If you had limp bacon, there would be no charge?
It is my experience that Cane Garden is run well. So I am prejudiced toward the folks there. Never been to breakfast at Cane Garden.
Tell us what happened. Perhaps we will get mad too. I see that bacon a la carte is $2.99

Not as bad as then charging me $2 to substitute a couple anchovies for Bacon crumbles on a caesar salad. Both seem more than a bit chintzy to me.

My biggest complaint about breakfast places is that they charge you about $2.60 for a cup of coffee, whether you drink 1 cup or 5 cups. And, they will advertise a low price for a "complete" breakfast, but it never includes coffee. That is not a complete breakfast.

 I got mine. Just wish I would have been in TV to get it and not stuck up north. Although I bet it was less crowded up here in the middle of the day when I got mine. Not as many retirees and a lot more stores around us to go to.
If you get the Wawa app, they also give you other freebies and discounts throughout the year.

I wonder if they bake their bacon in the oven on sheet pans. Making bacon extra crispy might require they put it on the grill and baby sit it until it gets more crispy or frying separate pieces. Just a guess. Maybe this is to discourage people from ordering it when they hear it is sixty cents extra. I know when I order extra salad dressing and if they tell me it is an extra charge it makes me think twice.

Only free Coffee on Thurday’s @ WAWA. Is that relevant to an extra 60 cent charge for crisp bacon? That’s how I always order my bacon “crisp” - - never charged extra and will send it back if not served the way I order it.

Are we really having this discussion over 60 cents?
rivaridger1
04-13-2018, 05:36 PM
One of the earlier posters is correct ---- $ 0.70 for a well done steak and maybe $ 0.30 less for rare. Fried egg over easy, how about $0.10 less ? Crispy hash browns, lets upcharge $ 0.25 since they take longer to cook.
Surcharging for crisp bacon simply tells me the restaurant managers are novices or Harvard MBA(s). Both are equally likely to fail at business which requires a lot of personal attention to really succeed.
An establishment which " bills " itself as a " country club " surcharging for " crisp bacon " ? Only in The Villages.

Ok, I apologize in advance. This discussion is not over 60 cents. According to the original post it is over 6 tenths of a penny as quite clearly it says .60 cents
This is a common mistake. For a long time the menu at a local establishment noted a charge of .99 cents for each pizza topping. "Topping's .99 cents each", thus earning the hard to obtain double award for a math and apostrophe error conjunction.
Next visit to Walmart sneak a look at the news rack for the Daily Sun. Weekday issues are .50 cents. I guess you get two for a penny.

I am actually ashamed to write this but feel duty bound to report the point. We were out of town last Wed. (Jacksonville) and were early for an appointment at Mayo Clinic so we looked for a place to get something to eat at around 1PM. We saw a "Dennys" and decided what the heck lets get a bite there. We both ordered a Breakfast type lunch and it was terrific. I would go back as it was reasonable and good basic food. Enough said.!!:mornincoffee:

The server at Cane Garden added an extra charge of sixty cents for CRISPY bacon? Is that what I am understanding?
Perhaps I got this wrong. How is their bacon generally served?
According to this, the chef at Cane Garden's name is Luis Santiago. This gives his background and also the restaurant's phone number. I bet there is some explanation if you would call.

There is no comparison between Mayo and the Village Hospital. Try having 2 misdiagnosis here and then going to Mayo for a 2nd opinion and finding not only were there mis diagnosis which were outrages but they missed 2 life threatening Cancers. One stage 3 with some spreading and which has now shown no continuation within the last year and is completely cancer free. And you ask??? Which would you like to rely on the Dr. who saw your symptons maybe 4 times in the last year or the one that has seen them 20 times in the last day. The one who has performed the operation 5 times in the last day or 3 times in the last year??Or really nuts the one that makes you wait for 1-2 hours in the waiting room or the one who has the patients seen right on schedule. There are many more reasons but will leave it there. The drive is 2 hours and 45 minutes which is kinda sensible given the alternatives.

A ridiculous response , ask the manager why the charge ,just guessing the bacon is precooked in the oven and extra crispy causes the cooks to give it extra time and treatment which screws up the flow in the kitchen the surcharge was to discourage goofy crap like that. A note in the menu should be advising of the charge.

If whatever you got for breakfast did say what came with it, like bacon it's extra. Not disagreeing with you but if didn't say bacon, you're charge. I've always said & I always get someone mad when I do say this but I always said when you moved to TV they always tell you the good things about TV. You learn what you think are the cons are after you've lived here a while & not everybody here agrees with what everybody thinks. If you came from New York city area, you probably think you've died & woke up in heaven. But where I came from in Ohio we had places where you could get 2 eggs, choice of meat, choice of potatoes, toast & coffee for $4.99, seriously & it's still that mush when I was there 1 month ago. TV is a great place to live but they're are cheaper places to eat & shop in the area. Sorry, you had to pay $.60 for a piece of bacon.

If you asked me if anyone would pay $2 for a bottle of water and $5 for a fancy coffee I would have guessed just the big spenders. Mr. Donut should have focused on the coffee like Starbucks instead of the donuts.

In one way, you had a better experience than i did, as I had to wait over 4 hours for pain meds due to a Kidney stone, but it was at least the correct diagnosis. Anywhere I have ever ordered bacon, I make it clear that the bacon must be "dead." Who wants to eat slimy, greasy limp bacon???
I understand that some of these items are partially cooked, however, when ordered, they must be heated to be served hot to the customer.
There is no "adjustment" to serving hot food and my "dead" bacon.
Trust me . . . if I was ever charged extra for my "dead" bacon, you would hear me in California in addition to having it taken off my bill.
This bacon "adjustment" is outrageous!

Seriously? Ridiculous answer. Crispy bacon should not come with an upcharge. Otherwise, reduce the price of soft scrambled eggs then, or hamburgers cooked medium. Hope the manager is taking note of these comments. They will lose business over a little extra time on the cooktop.

Maybe Cane Garden is trying to make up the revenue they will lose after the seasonal people leave, since they were SO rude to the year round residents ALL winter. We were even told to wait on ourselves while the help sat at a table next to us and ate and folded napkins.

I just now called Cane Garden and by the way the person who answered the phone was aware of this thread. I asked her two questions;

Dave you are wrong. You ordered a meal that did not include bacon or any other meat. Listed on the menu below the description are the add on's. The 60 cent charge was for the bacon you ordered (a very reasonable price for two pieces of bacon I might add). The description on you receipt was to be sure you got well done bacon. The 60 cent charge was for the bacon you ordered. I really do believe you owe the people at Cane Garden an apology. You most certainly were not charged extra to get the bacon well done.

That's what I was referring to in another post and figured that's more likely what happened. Many restaurants offer several options for breakfast entrees - some with meat or not, some with pancakes or not, etc, for varying prices. You also can order an entree and sometimes add an item for an upcharge versus paying for it as an additional side item. A 60 cent upcharge to add an item like bacon to a selected entree is actually a bargain compared to having to purchase it as a side to an entree for $2.99.

Dave my comments are only accurate if it was the Mcllory that you ordered.
In defense of Dave, the menu for The Mcllroy meal is very confusing and lacks proper punctuation. Apparently, he ordered the Mcllroy meal with bacon for $6.99 instead of $6.39 without the bacon, a difference of $.60. No charge to make it crispy. Here is the menu:
The Mcllroy 6.39
Two eggs with choice of home fries or hash browns and apple fritters with choice of one or two slices of toast or Biscuit With two bacon strips…$6.99 With two sausage patties…$6.99 With corned beef hash…$7.79 Add Two small cakes instead of biscuit or toast…$2.00 extra

You've always brought home the bacon, Dave.
Just fry it yourself.

Doesn't make sense. On their online menu, 3 strips of bacon is a side item for $2.99.
so If 3 strips of bacon =$2.99 (side order)
But 2 strips of bacon =$.60 ( over the McIlroy without meat)
You saved $2.39 but not having the 3rd strip of bacon !

Just got back from the Cane, hope this puts everything into clarity--with basic breakfast it is stated meats are 60 cents extra, the bill stated the charge was for crispy bacon--in all actuallity the charge was for the meat, NOT EXTRA CRISPY. also you can get a loaf of bread toasted piece by piece no extra charge

HELP MEEEEEE! Somebody please! I cannot stop reading this thread. Aaaaaugh!!
I like the servers at Cane Garden. They are always nice to us. (I gotta tellya though — I would love to go undercover as a server in TV. It has to be quite a study of human nature within a relatively confined demographic.)
And, btw, Shameless Confession: Cane has the best onion rings ever! Ohhhhhhhh, please do not judge me for eating onion rings.
Ohhhhhh, nooooooo, now I am posting in this thread. Whatinthehellisthematterwithme??? — Maybe I should get a job so I would have to go to work and I could stop reading this thread. Hmmmmmmmm, just think, the next server you meet could be Undercover Boomer.

And, Undercover Boomer.
This could be a reality series. Can I have the rights if I let you borrow my Timeshare Pick-up truck?
i.e.
This week Undercover Boomer works in the new Mexican Restaurant to see where they are hiding the tamales.

Well, tom, I was thinking more of a book. But you might be onto something. BUT, giving up my rights! To borrow your pickup truck? HAH! NEVAH!
I know two things about trucks:
1. Mr. Boomer drives one.
2. I did not just fall off a turnip truck.
Sooooooooo, no rights for you! Alllllll MINE! (But maybe some soup for you — if there is soup where I become Undercover Boomer. But you better be ready to order things correctly. OR! NO SOUP FOR YOU!) :)

I am so happy to hear about that great deal. We are from Chicago and you can't get eggs, toast, potatoes and bacon for that price $6.99! I Can't wait until I retire in a few months and can move into the Villages. Sugar Cane sounds like they have a delicious breakfast at a reasonable cost. YUMMM

Ummmmm Bacon, possibly the tastiest and most unhealthy food all in one greasy and delicious processed strip of nirvana. I wouldn't worry as much about the 60 cent up charge for the bacon as the cost of the triple by-pass open heart surgery.
Okay -- pay the $.60 up charge for the bacon because your triple bypass open heart surgery is free cuz it's covered by your Medicare and supplemental insurance!

Seriously? The charge is 60 cents more if you want bacon..and that's it. Nothing to do with Crispy...and we spent 10 pages on this because someone can't read a menu and, if he, she or it was confused, ASK THE MANAGER. Wow.....
