I have been a user of Verizon for years and have been happy with service here in TV. Over the last week I have experienced quite a few dropped ("call was lost") calls. Has anyone else been having a problem - or is my phone sick? (I live near Havana, and as I stated earlier, my service has been great up to the last week or so.)

Yes we've had the same problem. We've lost a few calls with our cell phones. We also get our Internet with Verizon via the Wireless Broadband. Our connected has disappeared several times. I'm actually happy to hear that it's a system problem. I just upgraded my Express Card for the Internet connect and I was regretting the change. Now I can call Verizon and put a bug in their ear. Thanks for asking the question.

My AT&T service was great until about a week ago. Also started dropping calls. Weak signal. Must be something in the atmosphere.

Yes, same problem, they can't hear me just before the call is dropped.

We had the same situation earlier this week. We live in Largo, and it happened when we were going north on Buena Vista. In the past service has been great from Verizon here in the Villages. Glad to hear it wasn't just our phone.

One should update the roaming especially when going from one location to another. Just dial *228 and then press option 2.....wait a minute or so and follow directions. At the end they will thank you for updating and say goodbye. Then you have to look at your screen and put the OK or select button. The phone will then reset itself...recycle through the off then on mode...at this point the update is complete.

Going on 10 years and never a dropped call. And we are usually the only ones with service when we go places like the mountains and lakes of TN....and other locations.

I do this every month and did it right after the calls started dropping. Didn't help this time so I think it's a different problem.

Have had Verizon for many, many years and have never had a problem with dropped calls or reception anywhere in the villages. But this past week, I had quite a few dropped calls, even had a problem accessing my voice messaging, and missed calls are not showing up on that screen. I wonder what's been happening. They talked about putting a new tower in this area around Hemingway, but could that be creating this problem?? Anyway, I hope it ends soon.

We also had problems with dropped calls and went to the Verizon store...they said it was the battery and gave us a new one. Also, you have to keep "updating" your cell by dialing *228...then hit number 2. Until I started doing this about once a month, I wouldn't get a 10:00 am voicemail until 5-6 at night. Hope that helps. jackie

I have had the same problem here in Hemingway, so I went to the Verizon store TWICE (different weeks) and the first time I was told that there was an antenna switchover because Verizon merged with some other company and now the antennas needed to be reconfigured or something...they said it would be about a week before service would be back to normal. Then last week (the second time I went in) the workers in the Verison store were very frustrated as they now say 3 towers in the area that serves Oxford, Wildwood, and the southern part of The Villages are all being redone at the same time and no finish date is being given to them. There were quite a few people there with the same problem. Poor planning on Verizon's part and not much help at the store, but hopefully they'll get it fixed soon......

Must be that new 3g network they have been advertising

I live in Hemingway and am still having problems. I was just on hold for 45 minutes on a call and when I finally got through the call was dropped. After almost a month of bad service (and hoping that it would clear itself up) I finally called Verizon to register a complaint. Ironically, even this call was dropped. To their credit they did call me back. They said a number of complaints have been registered but they still do not have a fix for it. Based on the conversation, I got the impression that the squeeky wheel gets the grease so if anyone else is still experiencing problems, I encourage you to call them and register it so that the priority is established.

I turned in a complaint several days ago (I think 12/30/09) and got a repair order number. They are suppose to text me, email me or phone me when the investigation has been done. Although I have had a few dropped calls, my major complaint is the inconsistency of Verizon's Wireless Broadband Service. It work very well up until about a month ago. Now it switches back and forth between Broadband and National Access at the drop of the hat. Sometimes the service is breathtakingly fast and other times I could walk to your house with the message faster than the Internet could carry it.

I too would ask everyone to ask for a repair number when they call. Something has to be done.

I had this same problem when I was down there in November. They told me it was because of the merge with Alltel. I wish I knew what phone billythekid has.

I thought I'd update on my service ticket. I just received the following message from Verizon.

The issue you reported is resolved, Tkt#NRB********6490. Please retry your service. If unsuccessful, call VZW 1 800 922 0204, option 3

Hopefully that will be the end of it.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to a good alternative (fees & service) to Verizon?

I think, IMHO, that Verizon is about as good as you can get. It has worked wonderfully up until about a month ago. The Tech said that at my address I was in the shadow of eight towers. I think they may have nailed the problem. My computer connection is smokin' now. Time will tell. It's one of those things that if you don't make the complaint yourself you're not sure they know that it isn't working correctly. When you complain to a store, they are generally not run by Verizon or whatever service and they often don't take the time to get the precise information and pass it on to someone who can fix it. They are busy selling phones and contracts.

I have had problems with Verizon for 2 months with no resolution. I cannot call out or receive calls from my home. I have to go sit in Walmarts parking lot to call. I have been dealing with 'techs' in customer service all this time. I'm paying a bill for no service?? I don't think so! When I told the last guy that I was going to change servers he told me I would still have to pay the cancellation charges. I said "but I have no service!" He said..."but you signed a contract with us". How about the contract they have with me? I am frustrated beyond words!

We moved to The Village of Bonita in February, from The Village of Liberty Park and immediately, MY phone started dropping calls. I thought it was my phone so bought a new one...same thing...although my husband's worked fine. I went to the Verizon store and was told there were 3 towers that did not get re-hooked up when Verizon merged with AT&T in this area (Havana) and they were working on it. The store reprogrammed my phone to go to different towers and it has helped. The also put in a service call on my behalf and I got a phone call back from Verizon stating the same tower issue and that it would be fixed shortly. That was about a month ago  Service still not good in this area of TV. I can get in my car and go almost anywhere else and it's fine. Verizon said EVERYONE with this dropped call problem needs to put in a service ticket so the powers that be GET THE MESSAGE !!!!! VERY Frustrating.

Did you GO to the Verizon store up by Home Depot? There is something they can do to help you.

We are still in Pennsylvania, but saw the PureTalk USA advertisement on the TOV site and decided to give them a try. So far so good... no problems with service or reception. There is no contract to sign and it's a pre-pay plan that only cost $10 per month (including taxes and fees) for 100 minutes. You would have to buy more minutes (at a nickel a minute) if you use your phone more than that. If you don't use it that much, your minutes will roll over. We don't use the phones often, so our minutes are already piling up and we are saving over $50 per month compared to what we were paying with Verizon. :MOJE_whot:

If you call you will be able to tell that you are dealing with a much smaller operation than Verizon, but they have been good for their word as far as we are concerned... including sending a replacement phone immediately when we discovered one of our phones had a loose hinge. If you buy a phone from them (they are inexpensive) you will get a refurbished model, but all three phones we received looked brand new.

I understand they use the AT&T network, so I can not speak for the reception in Florida. Their coverage map is strong on the East Coast, but thins out going West.

A few more things to consider... It's basic service, including voice mail and text if you want it (or you can have the text messaging turned off as we did). You will not get a manual with the new phone (they said manuals are available online), but also said they would send us one when we requested it (the manual has yet to arrive, but an extra charger did show up at no charge when we asked about that). You can use your existing phone if it has a SIM Card in it.

Again, I am not claiming they are perfect, but we have had good service so far... and we figured we would give them a shot for 10 bucks a month... we felt we had nothing to lose.
