White visiting my dad this weekend, there was an article in his local Dubuue, Iowa newspaper about people in the Dubuque area who have had their DNA tested to determine their ancestry.
My dad is quite interested in genealogy, and he thought about getting one of the tests. I am mildly interested in genealogy, but I do not have a burning desire to find out what percentage is what from my ancestry.
I have a friend who is African American who had her DNA tested a few months ago. She was surprised to find she has about 15% Scotch-Irish ancestry.
Has anyone on TOTV had their DNA tested for ancestry? Any surprises in what the test results were?

I've had mine done. Nothing really shocking about my heritage because I had no idea. I'm adopted and did mine as part of a search for blood relatives.

I used Familytreedna.com for mine. Happy with the results. Other than Ancestry.com there is also 23andme gene testing.

Granddaughter gifted me an ancestry test for Christmas. I didn't send it in for a couple of months because I was under the weather....but I have still not heard anything.
I think I will buy one for my husband as well, even though on his side someone has traced things back to the seventeen hundreds.
I find it so interesting.
But of course, we can't ever lose sight of the fact that each day is a brand new day to make of whatever we want.

After my former spouse had one done which resulted in some big surprises - not necessarily good or bad, just surprises - I had one done. Mine had no surprises and came out very much as I expected as I knew my family history well.

Is the DNA testing more of an is-like comparison i.e. yours is like all these others and here is what we know about them VS specific familial derivations?

This is what you get from Ancestry.com. AncestrySupport (https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/US-What-to-Expect-from-AncestryDNA)
When you submit a sample, we compare the data from your 700,000 markers to population data from more than 350 global regions and create a breakdown of your ethnicity by percentage.

I had mine done because I was curious about health traits and genetics. I used 23 And Me about 12 years ago and still log in every so often to see new health reports and fill out surveys. It's been very interesting! They identified a couple of genetic diseases I know I have and have been more right than not about other traits.
I gave my dad a subscription as a gift and yes Maury, he is the father. My ancestry turned out to be pretty much what I'd been told it was by my parents -- half Italian, quarter Finnish, quarter Welsh.
I'm not particularly interested in genealogy but have almost 3K genetic relatives in 23 And Me including two second cousins. No idea how big a database it is, but it was surprising to have so many matches. I get emails every so often from people trying to pin down their connection to me, but I know very little about my ancestry beyond my grandparents so am never any help.
There are privacy concerns of course, but I've had a lot of fun with it.

Had mine done last year. I had always been told by family that I was at least half american indian. The DNA test said I was mostly Irish and no american indian! I don't know as a fact but heard that ancestry.com had a special for $59 on line. I paid $99 for mine. Not sure where to find that deal but worth a search.

I thought that I was 50% Italian and 50% Polish. There were disparities with my background and my brothers. I used 23 and Me which said I was 18.1% Italian and 12.5% Eastern European/Polish. My brother used
MyHeritage DNA and showed he was 6.4% Italian and
31.5% Eastern European. Go figure.

I see both of the leading testing companies are running specials. Thinking of getting my dad one of these tests for his upcoming birthday, although he has a very good knowledge of his geneology.
I'm more curious about my mother's side of the family. I know I'm part Swedish on her side, but don't know much else about that side of the family.

Hmmm, yes I took the Ancestry.com -Christmas gift- test and was somehow surprised by the result that I am 39% British, 4% French, 7% Scandinavian and 50% Eastern Europe (I thought I was German 100%). The test result came 9 weeks after sending in the kit.

The upside of all this DNA testing is that you may actually find ancestral family members that you knew nothing about. I found contact information for a third cousin. She had information about my great grandfather and his 8 siblings from Ireland, that could have taken years of research to find out without the connection through the DNA database.
You can do a lot of FREE ancestry research on the website FamilySearch.org. That website and Ancestry.com are both sponsored by the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Our kids got me the Ancestry one for my birthday in 2016...it took a few weeks to come. I had surprises in that my dad was 100% Scandanavian and it didn't show
"that" in my results. I was mostly curious to have mine done due to not having too much information on both maternal sides. What it came up with was mostly northern European (NO surprise there) but also Eastern/Slavic European. The map/graphs also extended down into Greece/Turkey areas. The genetic tests don't offer which sides of the families are what---who gives which genes.
I was still curious to know how correct this all was so I purchased from MyHeritage as well (they had a "special" going) and it correlated closely with the Ancestry. I did join them for a year to work on the "trees". I was able to go back as far as the early 1500's before that subscription expired. It was an interesting endeavor for sure. I was able to connect with some cousins in the U.S. as well as extended cousins in Europe. THAT was fun!!
I'm not so dubious about offering my DNA to these entities. IF anyone wanted information on me---it's already "out there". IF we think we have privacy---think again because the technology is such that it's no longer a given we have it. Information is tracked via banks, credit cards, medical records, social security etc.

A friend gave my husband an Ancestry.com kit, since he doesn't know anything about his paternal heritage beyond his father. He thought he was mostly Irish, but it came back 91% Gr. Britain, 4% Irish. He decided to verify by ordering 123andme and it came back 58% British and Irish, a decided difference.

There's a 'downside' to that also.
I found out that I'm a direct descendant to Napoleon, William Shakespeare, Aristotle, Isaac Newton and Genghis Khan.
How in the heck am I supposed to live up to...what those people accomplished?
It's all so depressing.

I don't think so...I said "similar" not the same! MyHeritage is based in Israel and is an Israeli company. Ancestry is through the Mormon church. I think you can link up your "discoveries" once you've purchased a subscription. BUT I never did that! I just wanted to find family connections via the "tree".

Ancestry is not owned by the Mormon Church. The Church does have an extremely large data base and does not charge a subscription rate. The church does not offer any DNA testing.
Ancestry once offered Y DNA and autosomal DNA testing. They currently only offer autosomal. Ancestry offers very limited free research. They also own Fold3 (military records), newspapers.com, and find a grave among other companies.
An Ancestry all inclusive world membership is approx. $400 a year. That includes newspapers, military etc. USA only is about a hundred dollars a year.
Gedmatch is a separate company that compares your raw DNA sample from Ancestry with at least one other company’s data base. No charge for uploading raw data. Gedmatch, has better triangulation tools, some free- some a small fee.
