Extremely high water bill

Has anyone ever received an insanely high water usage bill (ours is 37,000 gallons in one month, and we don’t live in the house!). If so, how did you handle it?

I found the broken sprinkler head and replaced it when that happened to me. Went from 37400 gallons one month back down to 13110 the next.

Did you call the water department to have them check the meter?

You need to verify if the water was house water or irrigation water. Then look for the leak. If it is house water, it is probably from a toilet. If it is irrigation water, it is probably a broken sprinkler head. If it is neither, then you need to call a plumber or irrigation contractor.

Have your home watch stop by. If you inside water is turned off have them run the sprinklers to check for problems.

South of 466 I think they have 2 meters. Potable house water and non- potable water for irrigation.
North of 466 older area, older people, older plumbing....... that reminds me I need to call the Urologist.:ho:

The seal on our kohler toilet failed . My renters reported it but wouldn't allow the plumber to repair it as it was too "inconvenient" for them. I believe that was 7200 wasted gallons for one week.

No, they didn't get to stay at my place the next year.

Also OP since you are a remote owner you can add a master valve which you can turn on remotely even for just certain times or events like the door opening. You can even add a flow sensor to your irrigation system so you can see how much water a given zone is using. This helps you spot leaks. I have had those and this tells me about the usage.

Hunter uses screw-on sprinkler heads that can easily loosen over time and pop off. Another reason to water after sunrise is that someone can see the sprinkler geyser in your yard before it becomes a $100 bill. I have seen some lawn geysers at 3:00 AM during my insomnia walks and I flag down a Security Watch truck to report the address.

Yes I know, I was not happy about those renters blocking that repair. They were one of two that I was happy to leave my property. Most guests are very nice people.
