View Full Version : TOTV Meet and Greet can we revive this?

To all my friends from the monthly TOTV meet and greet, I stopped by Habaneros and talked to the manager about re-instating our monthly meeting. He seemed agreeable to but wants at least 1 day advance notice, and is expecting food and drink orders. Here is my take, if we meet at 3 PM then I am going to order take out for 4:30 or 5 PM as both me and my wife like Mexican.

So before we go any further, who is interested in getting together again, with the understanding that there will be food/drink orders.

It has been a while, and I forgot which Sunday we normally got together, or if there is a preference to change.

You can let me know by replying here or sending a PM.

I think it was on the third Friday, but any day is good. I would love to meet again and would be glad to order take out.

VT, that is really a nice idea. I've been thinking along those lines for awhile. Since I'm not on TOTV as much these days as I was in 07 and 08, I would love to meet the newbies that have joined us since then.

Back in the day when many of us were moving down here, it was a wonderful opportunity to create new friendships and we had a lot of fun.

I have not been there, but is Habaneros only a take out place? Does it still have the large patio with overhang where we can congregate??

I'd like to vote YES, I think its a great idea. Let me know if you need any help in getting it started.

Might come at some point. Depends on what is going on for me on that date. I did go to a few of these meetings at Crispers from 2007 through 2013 or so. Not sure why I stopped.

It would be quicker for me to go from Lake Deaton to the Fenney Grill than to Habaneros. As with all meeting sites for clubs, as the Villages grow it’s more difficult to find a location that’s within less than a half hour total travel time for participants to attend. One may have to change that to 1 hour total travel time in 5 years. So, I might attend once in a while. Good luck with your efforts.

Just a couple of FYIs. We set it at 3:00 pm at Crisper’s request — they didn’t want a large group interfering with the lunch crowd. People showed up when they could and left when they had to. We were never able to get an exact number of how many would attend. Crisper’s did not require food and drink orders and we could arrange our own seating indoors or out, depending on the weather.

It sounds like Habaneros will be seating us and will expect a head count. This could be difficult. Some will probably balk at ordering anything.

I hope you can restart the meet and greet. They really were fun and it is nice to put faces to names. I would say day, time and location need not be the same as it was. Just find a restaurant that can accommodate an unknown number of folks, will let them rearrange tables and has both indoor and outdoor seating. Just make sure that the day and time are the same each month so folks can have a monthly schedule. Good luck!

I would imagine that restaurants expect you to order food and drinks. Perhaps a pavilion at one of the rec centers would be a viable alternative. Less time constraint and BYO.

And I hope a good tip will be left if there is a lot of lingering...Servers have bills to pay too, not there for fun.

This thread isn't meant to be a controversy but when a bunch of folks want to be involved ALL sorts of opinions. I have no issue with Habenaro's. Think of it this way---wonder if a whole group had decided to go there and showed up. The establishment "might" have appreciated a head-count but it was "last minute"---so they would accomodate. I think whomever is the organizer, YOU can decide and those that want to show up does. I would do it and gladly order take-out. As an aside to this...a few years back a group that met regularily asked Panera for their meeting room. It was understood that many would order food while there. Eventually Panera changed things and said "you can have the room BUT you will need to pre-order (ie. their catering option) to do it and you need a certain number to do this too. We changed our meeting place. IF Habanaros ends up not being viable, THEN decide a different place (together).

I second that emotion Chi! I would think that a centrally located rec center location would work much better than a restaurant. Bring your own drinks and snacks and don't worry about disrupting or accomidating a business. I attended several from 2010 to 2015 and enjoyed meeting people face to face. I would attend when in TV.

Yep...a good, common sense idea!

And maybe even instead of a pavilion, why not just reserve a room at a Rec Center...in case of inclement weather?

We have how many Rec Centers...times how many rooms in each?

I'll even say that I'll be there...so as to draw the maximum crowd. :1rotfl:

It is doable, but you have to guarantee a certain number to the rec center to keep the room on a monthly basis and sometimes there is a wait for a room. One person has to be responsible. There is a list of rules and you must vacate when your time is up. Not difficult but not super easy either.

Yeah, I can see how it would be much easier to convince a restaurant to let a bunch of people show up, hang out taking up seats...but not order anything.

Oh wait, didn't the last place that said it was OK...go out of business?

I'm sure that unfortunate result though, was not reflective...on poor business decisions in general. :ohdear:

You can sit at your own table at just watch and then see who comes over to talk with you. With the Crispers meetings I went to there would be some people hopping from table to table to visit and others who would just talk with whoever was at their table.

There are some TOTVers I would not want to talk to at all but I am pretty sure they know who they are as would anyone who reads TOTV with regularity.

The TOTV's meetings have never had huge attendance. I think a couple of times there were about 40 people, but most of the time it is about twenty. I have had get togethers inviting the TOTV bunch to our home three times and about forty would come.

At the regular meetings in the past, (at Crispers) many would give their real name to us, but on the name tags most would write their screen name as that is how other's would know them.

In high school where I taught I would occasionally ask a student "Hey, you know what my pen name is?" Scripto----I would start laughing before the student. And they would always say "
"that's corny, or that's stupid. And the only reason I'm laughing is because your laughing at your own dumb joke." That happened a lot. Google "Dad jokes." There's a lot of corny people out there.

Everybody has an ID. Pick a rec center in the middle of the villages.

Everyone can bring their own drink, plate, fork and napkins--and for a snack everyone can bring any kind of cut up fruit to feed 4 people on a serving plate with a toothpick in each piece so there is no "double dipping." You could cut up a melon. wash some blueberries [that's a lot of toothpicks], pineapple, apples, whatever. You walk around the "Fruity Buffet Table" and make a fruit salad. The leftovers go back home.

No head count
No collecting money

Sometimes there were just a handful of people that turned out for the monthly meeting; sometimes more.
I personally find rooms in rec centers to be rather sterile and off putting, especially if there is a small gathering.
But I don't have a dog in this fight.

I said rec center because it's free. I use to be part of a neighborhood group who met at the rec center once a month. We pushed the tables together and played games and sometimes just chatted and ate what ever anyone brought.

It has NEVER, EVER, been anything but calm and warm and welcoming. Most of the time we sit in a circle and each says Hello and tells how long they have lived here or some other stuff about themselves which may or may not include their real name. No one cares. Most of us can't remember two names. There often is a bit of hugging. Always a lot of smiling. Never anything tense. NEVER. In the ten years I have attended the meetings, anyway.

ALL, first thank you for all of your thoughts and suggestions. I stopped by Eisenhower Rec center today (I also called the district gov), and this is what I was told. We can NOT get the use of a rec center on a regular basis unless we are a registered Villages club, and all people attending the meeting would need village IDs or guest passes. So based on this information the rec centers will not be a suitable location for the meetings.

As noted previously, restaurants are going to expect paying customers, so currently, I am out of ideas. If anyone else has an idea or contact with another business of facility let us know.

We were not on for Friday the 18th of May at 3:00 PM at Haberneros Mexican Grill? Habanero's Mexican Grill | The best Mexican Restaurant in Florida! (http://www.habanerosmexicangrillfl.com/Home)

Looks like the Lunch Menu there stops at 2:30 PM.

I would be open to having it at our home but I can't in the next few weeks, having house guests, longed for house guests that we plan to spend every minute with.

That is a good idea. Everyone would have I.D.s or passes if they were visiting. Tall Trees Adult Pool is near the center of TV?

Meetings were always on Sunday, the 3rd Sunday if I recall correctly, at 3 PM. Let's HOLD OFF on meeting this month until we get some consensus, also Habanero's wants at least 1 day advanced notice. Since I started this, please send me a message or PM for next month, so I have a count, then I will contact Habanero's and confirm if this is still a go.

Of course if we come up with another alternative that will be great.

:1rotfl:

Card rooms at the rec centers can seat about 40 or so. I think all restaurants will ask for food and drink orders and rightfully so.

I wonder how one starts... an "official" club?

Given that there are what, over 2,700 of them...it shouldn't be that difficult.

However, I can't seem to find the answer anywhere in this link.

Here's an application to rent a room, that leads one to think (first box)... that maybe even 'individuals can rent' rooms.

Yep, apparently there is a cost for the rooms.

No matter that there are so many users of Talk of the Villages, only twice have we had 40 people at the Crispers meeting.. Most of the time there is about a dozen. The Rec centers allow you to use the room if you have a certain amount of people. If you drop to a few, you lose use of the room.

More do come when the administrators of the site send a reminder, which happened twice. It is often the same people every time with two or three newbies and there was never any pot stirrer's or any eyebrow raising comments.

There was never anything close to a heated discussion either. Kathie was in charge for a long time and then several of us took turns and then Ellen was the hostess for several years. It ended when Crispers was shut down in May of 2017. We would meet on the patio if it was comfortable weather, at three on the third Friday and maybe a third would get food, most of the rest would order cold drinks. The host had people sign in and people could sign their real name or their screen name so we have a record of who attended. Only once in my attendance did the previous administrator attend a meeting and the in laws of the current owner attended several times.

I gathered people from TOTV for snacks and dessert at our home three times. We had about 40 each time. About ten years ago many of us would meet "under the clock" at Lake Sumter Landing for evening TOTV get togethers. We had some fun times and Sam Hass organized a "freeze on the dance floor" where all of us from TOTV stopped in a frozen position for several minutes, not expected by the other dancers. We had a ghost hunt one year that ended up on a creepy road just outside TV where a couple girls swore they saw a sheet draped figure. Sam Hass had a bunch of the women to her house several times. Many loved posters on TOTV have passed away. We have some really great memories of good times, and a good reason to keep them going.

I don't see why we can't have them on Sunday and the outdoor picnic area in a rec center is another good idea. Villagetinker, I feel many of us would like for you to be at the helm. The only problem on Sunday afternoon is conflict with sports on TV. Everyone could just bring their own drinks. Sometimes keeping it simple, without food, is better. We could try it and see. Habaneros on Sunday is also very much worth a try.

I've not participated in the past...the one thing I'd see with having it outside could be weather. We're heading into the rainy season (which also means heat/humidity). THAT said---can affect people too. I don't think I'd come if held under a pavilion, outside. What Gracie says about clubs in a rec center is true. Limited time and we'd be in charge of re-setting the room (but we're adults and that could be done). With any event, not everyone will be pleased so just whomever wants to plan it do so and the rest will fall into place.

When it was first started in 1907 or ‘08, Sharon (VillagesKid) organized it. I think Barefoot and Donna found Crispers for us. For the first few years, it was rare to have less than thirty and usually more like forty. I took over for Sharon and then Kathie started running it. Then whoever volunteered for the next month (actually the best method) and when that quit working, Ellen. Towards the end, few people were ordering anything.

For some reason, few wanted to meet at a rec center. The main reason was folks wanted to get together outdoors when weather permitted, indoors when not. Forming a club is relatively easy. There was one other major issue — for some reason, TOTV appeared to be some sort of threat to the Developer (refused to allow ads in The Sun, no fliers allowed at town squares, etc.). Even so, a rec center as a club would probably be the best route. The only question is which rec center? Everyone would want it close to them. Kind of difficult with TV’s size today.

I stopped at Sterling Height Rec center. I asked the attendant if you needed to be in an official club to use the outdoor games or pavilion. I told him it was a bunch of villagers who chat on TOTV. He said if there are no leagues scheduled then the group could use the outdoor games and pavilion. I would ask that someone go to another rec center and ask the same question. Forming a club may be simple but someone has to take responsibility for the group. In all likelihood I will not attend, I have offline and online friends. I wanted to put this out there as a suggestion. As for food, I think one kind of fresh fruit in a bowl for 4 is tasty, easy and inexpensive with no waste and not much garbage. Bring your own utensils and a drink. I've been to events like this and your own chair may be more comfortable then a picnic bench. As everyone knows the bathrooms are next to the pavilion.

Tom. According to BogieShooter's post, the same procedure to use a room is needed to use the picnic area or "pavilion" as it is called. You must have a responsible volunteer sign for it.

The get together usually is about two hours.

We felt it was simple to have the TOTV function at a restaurant.
Especially because only a handful of people might show up.
Our thinking was we could use the patio if the weather was pleasant; otherwise we could move the function inside.
We booked the function at 3 PM on Fridays because Crispers wasn't busy at that time.
We always checked with the manager in advance, to remind him of our monthly function.
