View Full Version : When a thread gets stale it's difficult........

One of the only good things, IMHO about the political thread I liked is that every day there was something new to talk about.
When a thread gets stale it's difficult to think of a subject that is interesting, uplifting or informative to get a conversation going. I'll bet there is a whole team of writers who look for subjects on The View.
What if there was a thread that disappeared in 24 hours. The subject is whatever they talk about on The View that day. And yesterdays thread gets deleted right after the show airs so someone can start a new subject. You don't need to watch their show or express their opinions. It's a conversation piece like the 3 word thread or the thread about nothing.
Sure people may say some things in the thread that others think is quite the opposite of where they stand. But it all disappears and the new topic comes up 24 hours later.
Think of this kind of temporary thread I am describing as a Puzzle. When we have an extended family vacation my sybs and their spouses buy a 1,000 piece puzzle and put it on the dining room table. We're on the go all day but they each get involved in the puzzle during down time. At the end of the vacation, it's finished and they leave it behind.
"It's the going, not the getting there, that's good"
I went here The View: Tuesday May 08 2018 Watch Full Episode | 05/08/2018 (http://abc.go.com/shows/the-view/episode-guide/2018-05/08-tuesday-may-08-2018)
Teacher Erik Weihenmayer surprises Meghan McCain; Gabrielle Union joins.
I had to look up Erik Weihenmayer.
wiki---"Erik Weihenmayer (born September 23, 1968) is an American athlete, adventurer, author, activist and motivational speaker, and the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, on May 25, 2001. For this feat, he was honored with a Time Magazine cover story. He also completed the Seven Summits in September"

Then how would people be able to search for info that may be old but still relevant?

I added to the original post.
Using the information I provided someone could start a thread about disabled teachers or scout leaders or relatives who may have influenced them.
At the moment, I can't think of any disabled teachers I had but would enjoy hearing from others.
But 24 hrs from when it starts it disappears [no hard feelings] and a new topic starts.
I'm brainstorming.

I don't understand your question. Can you give me an example?

Are you just talking about one single forum? I thought you were talking about all of them.

Are you just talking about one single forum? I thought you were talking about all of them. That is a good question.
I was only thinking of 1 thread that has a new subject everyday that only lasts a day.
That's new for TOTV. And they would have to delete everything in that 1 and only thread everyday before a new one is started. I imagine that can be automated.
The problem is thinking of an interesting subject subject everyday.

This is what I mean about defining the requirements. The thread would need to have a generic name like "topic for the day" and every day all of the posts on that single thread would need to be deleted but not the thread. I am sure this could in fact be automated.

The difficult part is coming up with a topic.
The View had a good one about "Your most influential teacher" but the previous day it was about a young actor's new movie. So that's not going to work everyday---and what about the weekend?

If no one had an idea the thread would simply remain empty. The weekends would still operate the same way. It would probably need to be a sticky in one of the forums.

That's a good idea. Limited to one subject per day. Anyone can create a subject.
Because this turned into a 2 person thread I don't think there is any other interest. That's too bad I was trying to come up with a new format. Thank-you for taking an interest and hanging in there.

While I appreciate the 'outside-the-box' thinking, I believe you may be missing or underestimating... a few problems with your idea.
1. Not everyone gets on every day, so if a subject a member likes, or would want to comment on, is deleted every day...we could miss some excellent member input.
2. The work for the mods of either deleting an entire thread, or more likely remembering to 'close' it...could be problematical.
3. If some good info comes up in a daily thread, but that thread disappears...then it will never show up in a search.
Anyway, one good thing about it...there's now 3 people in this thread. :D

How about his idea for a thread----it's named "Speaking of" in order to participate you have to change the direction of the thread. For example:
My father was a kind man but he had a temper. When my sister and I were young he burst in the kitchen angry at himself. He asked us if we seen his glasses.
We were motionless. He left to look in the garage. They were on his head. I said to my sister I'm not going to tell him, you tell him. She didn't want to tell him either.
[is this a true story?]
Speaking of:[any story would work about fathers, garages, glasses, tempers, sisters, kitchens] as long as it goes in a different direction. And then someone else would start a new story. and also ask
[is this a true story?]
To take it to the next level we could ask the readers if it's a true story or a made up story.

Just start a thread the usual way, with the title...'Speaking Of.'
Use your humorous story...as the first post.
I'll be looking for it in 'New Posts'...in the next 30 minutes. :D

I agree. Just start a new topic every day and eventually the old ones go away by themselves. I got some very interesting information on my pollution post.

Maybe you are on to something. I can't create a new topic everyday. But if there is a running thread like 3 words or nothing it's easier to keep it going.
There is an NPR contest show. I forget the name. The contestant hears 3 stories, 2 are lies and 1 is the truth. They have to guess the true story. It's fun to play along. I can think of 1 story but not 3.
But all this doesn't go any where unless there is interest in telling a true story or making one up.
