Hanging small quilt on wall

My wife wants me to hang a small decorative quilt on the wall with a curtain rod. I am in a poured cement villa. This would be on an outside wall. Please correct me if I am wrong but would the outside wall just have furring strips to screw into? If so, would they be horizontal or vertical? Are they a specific number of inches from each other? I do have one of those inexpensive magnetic studfinders to locate the furring strips. Also, would the inside walls have metal studs and no furring strips? I did a search on this but didn’t see the specific answers to my questions.

Bruce, SHOULD be furring strips, but you might find metal studs. Go to the building department, Pinellas Plaza, go in the library entrance, turn right, go to end of hall they are on the left. They can send you your house plans by email. This should give you the spacing, I would expect 2 foot. A stud finder will work for both wood and metal, so you can use one of these. I have one and can give you a hand. You can determine the type (wood or metal) by using a small drill bit (1/16") and drilling a pilot hole.
Drywall will by 5/8", furring strip will typically be (1") nominal 3/4 inch, so 1 1/4" screws should work well for the wood strips, if you have metal studs, you may be able to get away with a pilot hole and sheet metal screws. as long as the quilt is not too heavy.

I have heavy drapes hung on an exterior wall by just drilling a hole in the drywall and using plastic expansion anchors. I really don't think you need to locate the studs.

Thanks villagetinker. I had you in mind when I asked this question. Using the stud finder I think it is vertical furring strips about 16” apart. The stud finder isn’t finding metal the entire vertical span so that is why I am assuming furring strips. Anyway I found an article online about hanging a small quilt by inserting a yardstick into the quilt instead of the curtain rod. This is going to greatly reduce the weight and make it much easier to hang. But thanks for the input I’ve received thus far.

I have 3 sets of ceiling to floor drapes hung on the exterior wall of a concrete villa. I just drilled 2 holes into the drywall and inserted plastic expansion anchors and hung a curtain rod on metal brackets. There is no need to locate any studs to hang a quilt on a curtain rod. Unless I am missing something?

What about Command strips. Some can hold up to 5 lbs. Not sure if they make one that would work but worth checking Amazon.

I’m a stubborn New Englander. The only way to hang anything on the wall is to screw the hanger into a wood stud so that the hanger can withstand 10 times the weight of whatever you are hanging. That said, a prong hanger with a yardstick should be easy and light, not even needing a stud. I’ve got to start thinking more like a Floridian.

What about Command strips. Some can hold up to 5 lbs. Not sure if they make one that would work but worth checking Amazon.

I have not had good experiences with Command Hooks. Overtime they do give out. I certainly would not use them for something heavy.
