Memorial Day memories

Memorial Day brings back some really special memories for us. During our real life we lived in suburban areas that always had the traditional small town Memorial Day Parade. Our town parade passed the bottom of our little road, we would stand on the corner waving our little flags and wait for the parade, you could hear the band before the parade came into sight and the anticipation in the crowd would get louder and louder and the children would get more and more excited.

Our Parade always started with the police chief's car followed by the police on foot, then the high school band and the cheer leaders, then we would get whatever Politician decided to join our parade, and then Town dignitaries of all shapes and sizes ...................... Everything would end up at the Village Green and there would be a huge hamburger and hot dog cookout. The hamburgers were like hockey pucks and the hot dogs were not great, but all your neighbors would be there and the band would play and everyone would have a great time. It was all very small town hokey stuff, but so much fun.

Unfortunately, I was just told that the Parade does not happen any more! Small town America seems to be disappearing, but at least we have some great memories.

I was about a mile south of this working my last day with a partnership I had been an assistant manager (and some other titles) at the Bower's Mansion concession stand. I also worked at Sky Tavern Junior Ski Program's lunch service and the softball diamond's concession stand at Idlewild Park. Did this for maybe six or seven years.

Noticed a lot of commotion in people to the far north side of the park and then took a look at the telephone polls which had completely horizontal lines from massive weight pushed against them further up the line.

My father then ended up handling some of the claims by homeowners whose dwellings were destroyed by this massive mud slide.

And my grandmother was calling from Cap Cod, MA that evening as she saw the pictures on the national news and feared the very worst.

At this time we should also remember the children of the women and men who serve. They pay a terrific price and are seldom recognized. When I see a child run to his or her father or mother who are returning from serving I think of the terrible price they are also paying. No parent at a lot of their achievements or if living with them the changing of schools and friends all the time. They carry a lot of hurt through life. Many suffer from what is known as "Separation Syndrome" which means they are unable to attach themselves to things in life because they are so use to losing them. Just a thought to put them in your prayers.:pray:

Your post reminded me of the hometown parade in the suburb where I moved from. It would pass through the downtown area and end up at Memorial Park for the remembering the veterans ceremony. Here's a photo from last year's parade.

Remembering my uncle Joe this Memorial Day. He fought in a lot of battles in the pacific during WWII. He hardly ever talked about WWII but as he got older, he shared the story of how he was asked to man another commissary on his ship because it was bigger. The person that was sent in his place unfortunately died as a bomb hit the ship.

Stationed off the coast of Japan when it surrendered. Even when he was in his nineties, he could rattle off off the battles he fought in.

On Memorial day 1968, I was aboard the USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN 635) we were supposed to be transiting back to our home port , instead we were aiding in the search for the USS Scorpion which was reported overdue on 22May68-- she was lost with all hands

SAD.

Only two nuke subs we ever lost......the Scorpion and the Thresher (lost in 1963).

Had the privilege of attending high school with one of the Thresher officers, who had just left the Naval Academy, and knew briefly a radioman aboard the Scorpion.

Well today I attended the memorial day service at Veterans Memorial Park in Spanish Springs.

It was an hour service attended by perhaps 200 plus people.

For a community of over 20% veterans...probably 25,000... and, of course populated with ever so patriotic flag planters...it was a disgraceful turnout.

So much for patriotism here in TV...patriotic as long as it doenst interfer with any other activity

Senator McCain, a 6 year POW who refused release without his mates had this tweet on our Memorial Day

"Today we honor the Americans who sacrificed everything to secure the blessings of liberty. Family and friends to some, heroes to all - who lived, fought and died for the safety and future of a great and good nation. God bless them and grant them perpetual peace."



This is a man with whom I have disagreed on issues over the years, but is our living example of patriotism.

This is an honorable and good man, and may God bless this country with more like him. He deserves respect if the nation.
